 The Cameron County Food Pantry will hold a distribution for people determined eligible on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the building located behind the Northern Tier Community Action offices at 135 West Fourth Street in Emporium.

Christmas in the Wilds Expands

Christmas in the Wilds Expands

Christmas in the Wilds grows to a weekend event. Starting Friday night December 8th the Holiday House Tour returns. Three homes and three businesses will open their doors spreading cheer and fun while raising funds for the Cameron County Fireworks. The $15.00 ticketed event begins at Flowers N Things, and ends at Aroma Café with hors d’oeuvre, desserts and samples from Bearded Brewing. In between groups will tour homes and the Guy and Mary Felt atrium. Cameron County Quilters will display yard squares that they will auction off using silent bids. Tickets can be reserved online at www.cameroncountychamber.org, or Facebook. Phone calls and walk-in reservations can be made at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office.

On Saturday breakfast with Santa benefits the Emporium Fire Department Auxiliary. Parents and children can have their pictures taken with Santa while enjoying breakfast. Street vendors and the Emporium Senior Center craft show opens at 9. The parade steps off at noon.

New this year is the Yuletide Caroling Event. The chamber is inviting individuals, groups, students, and families to sing on the outdoor stage. May the best crooner win! Pre-registration for the free contest is now open at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office.

Those attending the event are reminded that the house and business decorating contest ends Saturday December 8. Ballots will be made available during Shop Small Saturday, November 25.

Cameron County Deck the Halls Contest 

 Cameron County Chamber of Commerce annual house decorating contest sponsored by L& M Lumber now taking registrations. Those wishing to compete, must register at the chamber office by November 18 with the $5 entrance fee. Competitors can take home $100, $75 or $50 in chamber bucks that can be spent like cash at more than 35 businesses in the region. 

 Voting begins November 29 and ends December 8.

Emporium Resident In NYC Marathon

Emporium resident Eugenia Clark will be running in tomorrows New York City Marathon. 

 The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with 51,394 finishers in 2016 and 98,247 applicants for the 2017 race.

Cameron County Community Chest 2018 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

We are five weeks into the 2018 fund drive. Over 200 letters have gone out to local individuals, businesses and organizations. We have had a great start. Through Nov. 2nd we have collected $6,352 toward our $20,100 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2018.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month’s feature will be the Cameron County Recreation Board.

Cameron County Recreation Center provides many different services to the local community. The main focus is to provide a safe but fun environment for area youth to enjoy. The game room is open Tuesdays through Saturday and offers a variety of table games and electronic gaming. The membership also includes use of the outdoor basketball court and pickle ball court. They have two rooms available for rent for meetings and parties. The large room is the most popular for parties and can be rented for a minimal fee. There is no charge for non-profit rentals. Tables and chairs can be rented (when available) as well as outdoor party games. Zumba classes are held Monday through Thursday at 6:30 pm, as well as some Saturday’s at 10:00 am. Please contact the Center for more information or check them out on Facebook at Cameron County Recreation Center. The Recreation Center will continue to collaborate with the 4-H program to provide out of school programs for youth ages 8-18 as well as summer 4-H programs. This summer, two local playgrounds were supervised, South Park and Third Street. The participants enjoyed wildlife presentations from Cameron County Conservation, 4-H Bird presentation, Mountaineer Search and Rescue truck tour, a painting class by Peggy Heckman and several walking trips to local offices including the historical society, the fire hall and to the caboose to learn about Cameron County history. Cameron County Recreation is also responsible for organizing and scheduling games for the girls and boys 4th through 6th grade elementary basketball program. Cameron County Recreation Center is funded partly by the County, Emporium Foundation and Community Chest. The 4-H and summer programs are funded entirely by grants from the Emporium Foundation. Northwest Donates to CC Community Chest

This is a yearly donation that comes from the Northwest Charitable Foundation. Northwest Savings Bank appreciates the effort of the Cameron County Community Chest and wishes them success in reaching the 2018 campaign goal.

Rotary News

Emporium Rotary members forego a hot cooked lunch by brown bagging it at their luncheon meeting October 24th and donating their lunch money to The Rotary Foundation for World Polio Day. Each year, the club donates a substantial amount towards the eradication of polio in the world.

Poliomyelitis (polio) is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Fewer than 250 polio cases were reported worldwide in 2012, which is a 99% reduction since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. If we don't stay the course, experts say polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years. The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.

Thanks to a new campaign, every dollar donated to Rotary will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding. Rotary launched its Polio Plus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication, in 1985. Since then, Rotary and its partners have helped reduce the number of annual cases from 350,000 to fewer than 250 and remain committed until every child is safe from the disease. Rotary has contributed more than US$1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.

 In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $9 billion to the effort. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988,is a public-private partnership including Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building. More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with partners like UNICEF to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to share the message with those isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

2nd annual Chinese Auction Fundraiser

Friends, Family, and Small Business Owners! 

We are planning for our 2nd annual Chinese Auction Fundraiser for the Boys 4th, 5th, and 6th grade basketball teams at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Building. If you would like to donate an item, gift basket, gift certificate, etc, to support this great group of kids, please let me know and I can make arrangements for pickup. We would like to have donations by November 12th so we have time to prepare the donation cards. Tickets will go on sale November 20th and the drawings will be held Saturday, December 9th, during Christmas in the Wilds.  St. Mark Church is a participant in this year’s Trunk-or-Treat, Saturday, October 28th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the CCHS Parking Lot.

 We are asking our parishioners to help by donating candy to this safety-oriented, ecumenical event which draws upwards of 600 children. There is a donation table set up in the back of church for candy drop-off.

Schedule Announced for Haunted Trail at Sinnemahoning State Park

 It’s back! The Haunted Trail and All Hallows Eve Celebration returns to Sinnemahoning State Park on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 4:00-9:00 PM. With new activities for younger kids and new frights for the adults and older kids, this popular Halloween event is bigger and scarier than before. At just $10.00 per carload, this trail is a spook-tacular deal! Admission fee includes haunted trail, hayride, bonfire and more.

The evening of fun begins with activities and games for younger children from 4:00-6:00 PM. Children and their families can create owls, bats, and other make-and-take crafts or play fun games for prizes. The “Less Spooky” version of the trail will also run from 4:00-6:00 PM, giving smaller children and their families a chance to enjoy the haunted trail experience before dark, with no masks, no chainsaws and no screaming.

Bwana Jim’s Wildlife Show begins at 6:00 PM in the classroom of the Wildlife Center. Bwana Jim, from Shinglehouse, PA, has a collection of exotic animals including armadillos, wallabies, snakes, and birds. He will bring along some of his menagerie and share his knowledge of these animals in a fun, witty, and entertaining show for all ages.

At 7:00 PM, the “Full-Terror” version of the Haunted Trail opens for older children and adults. Spiders, ghosts, zombies, and the chainsaw guy have all returned, plus new frights including creepy clowns, enchanting witches, an axe-wielding maniac, and more.

Hayrides and a bonfire will run from 4:00-6:00 PM and from 7:00-8:30 PM. Refreshments will be sold by the students of Austin School.

The Haunted Trail and All Hallows Eve Celebration event will be held, rain or shine, at the Park Office and Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park, just off Route 872 in Grove Township, on Saturday, October 28, from 4:00-9:00 PM. Trail covers about ½ mile over uneven ground. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the outdoors, and be prepared to be scared.

  Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run Sets Records

 Three course records and beautiful weather drew a record number of competitors for the fifth year of the Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run on Saturday October 21. More than 80 enjoyed a day in the PA Wilds exploring the West Creek Rails Trail, and Elk State Forest traversing pipeline cuts and DCNR trails. More than two-thirds of the participants were from outside of the region.

Harrisburg runner Derek Newcomer broke his own 10k record finishing in 1 hour 7 minutes. Angelia Clarke from Lakeview New York was the first woman to cross the finish line in a time of 1 hour 33 minutes. The husband and wife team of Tom and Karen Hutton were the first from Cameron County to finish, taking home the Caldwell Cup.

A runner from Dubois took home first place in the 25k. Sean Craig finished with a time of 2 hours 19 minutes. The first female to finish was Candice Browning from Buffalo with a time of 2 hours 35 minutes. Caldwell Cup winners were Stephen Winston and Eugenia Clark.

This year the 50k designated as the state championship race for the Road Runners Club of America. Joshua Gorman from St Marys broke his own mark and set a new record of 4 hours 35 minutes. The 50k women state champion is Doreen Chaffee from Wellsville New York. Chaffee crossed the finish line in 5 hours 34 minutes, setting a new record. Saul Solveson from Shippen Township took home the Caldwell Cup.

Taking home the master championship for those between the ages of 40 and 49 was Marshall Pope from Tobyhanna in 8 hours 31 minutes. The Grand Masters champion for those between the ages of 50 and 59 is Charles Ellis from Scottdale finishing in 7 hours and 18 minutes, while Michael Ball took home the Senior Grand Masters for those over the age of 60 with a time of 7 hours 31 minutes.

School Pool Meeting

Interested citizens attended the October 17 School Pool Meeting.

 Members of community organizations and residents filled the library and the meeting was positive and productive! The school board presented cost comparisons from two other schools that have swimming pools and questions were asked and answered. Many in attendance had suggestions for helping to increase pool useage and to reduce costs. This was not a meeting to discuss closing of the pool as is was a general concencus it is an assett to our community. The school board is open to suggestions that may promote the pool and help with costs.

Historic Hike into Beechwood

Historic Hike into Beechwood 

Cameron County Historical Society is hosting a Historic Walk through Beechwood on

 October 28th at 10 am.

 Local historians, John Kautz and Wendy Davis, will guide the hike. Beechwood was once a booming community with the area rich in lumber and railroad industry. It is beautiful, peaceful area that is rich with history. We will talk about some Beechwood stories and look at some old pictures to help visualize what it looked in its heyday. There will also be an opportunity to climb the hill side into the hidden darkness of the Glover Cemetery and pay our respects to those laid to rest there. 

In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be rescheduled. The cancellation, if required, will be announced on WLEM radio. All interested hikers will meet at the "road side rest" just outside of Truman at 10am for instructions and potential carpooling.

 This no-cost hike is sponsored by Cameron County Historical Society and is open the the public. Donations are welcome to help to support Historical Society activities!

The fall leave colors are not as spectacular as some years, but it is still a beautiful time of year to take a ride along the many roads of Cameron County.

Richard D. Losey, Sr.

 AUSTIN- Richard D. Losey, 82, formerly of Austin, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2017) in Sena Kean Manor, Smethport. Born October 12, 1934, in Austin, he was a son of John and Grace Brooks Losey. On Nov. 13, 1954, he married Mary Ann McElwee, who died Feb. 6, 2017. They were married 63 years.

Richard was a lifetime resident of the area and attended Austin High School. He was a truck driver with Emporium Contractors for many years before his retirement. Mr. Losey was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church of Austin, volunteered with the Austin Food Bank, was a member of the coffee club at Big Mike’s Dairy Dine, and loved working in his yard and gardening. Richard was willing to lend a hand to whomever needed it, and greeted everyone with a smile and twinkle in his blue eyes.

Surviving are a daughter, Gayle E. (Leslie) Richner of Port Allegany; two sons, Gary (Gina) Losey of Baltimore, MD, Richard D. Losey, Jr. of Shinglehouse; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Pat) Losey of Florida; a sister, Sarah Jean Simpson of Weatherly, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Ann, a brother, John Losey; and a sister, Marigold Phenicie.

Friends were received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 14, 2017) with Rev. James Campbell, pastor of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Port Allegany, officiating. Burial will be in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Port Allegany.

A scriptural wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Guy and Mary Felt Manor

 Purchase a snowman ornament in memory or honor of a loved one for a minimum donation of $5.00. Ornaments will be placed on a tree in the atrium at the Manor. All proceeds from this event benefit the Felt Manor/Felt Living Auxiliary and will be used to purchase new bed spreads for the residents.

 Enjoy the music of Old Skool at the finish line in downtown Emporium beginning at 1 pm. Awards should begin around 3 pm today
