Library to host book signing by area author

Library to host book signing by area author

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to host area author, Jeanette Van Zanten Stump for a book signing of her latest title, “She Hath Wings,” on Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. The event will be held in front of the library building if weather permits, in the case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the multipurpose room, with a limit of 5 patrons at a time (plus the author) allowed in at once.

Van Zanten Stump is a freelance writer of memoir. She resides in Ridgway, Pennsylvania with her husband Cliff and their two corgis, Tasha and Tucker. Jeanette is a memoirist and along with her Memoirs, she published Little Mill Creek Family Recipes. In March of 2018, The Red Caboose-An Orphan's Journey was released. Jeanette Van Zanten Stump did not know how to listen to the whispers of her heart until they became screams. “She Hath Wings” is a memoir of someone in search of a nurturing community. But sometimes that search leaves you vulnerable. The setting of the book takes place in Cameron and Elk County. For 25 years, Jeanette was told to prepare for an Armageddon that would destroy everything she knew. She would need to learn to think for herself, and her children, against all odds.

A sequel to “The Red Caboose-An Orphan’s Journey,” a memoir of the ten years Jeanette lived in an orphanage from age three to thirteen, “She Hath Wings” is her story of a young mother’s desire to find freedom and love. From the darkness of a lonely marriage, Jeanette was recruited by Jehovah’s Witnesses into a religion that isolated her and instructed her how to think. This is her journey to breaking free emotionally and spiritually.

Van Zanten Stump will have copies of both of her books available for purchase, and the library will also add both memoirs to their collection.

New Archery Program @ Andrews Farm

CCOYA is excited to announce a new addition to the Andrews Farm.

In hopes to generate more interest in young archers and other archery enthusiasts the Andrews Family has put in an archery trail with 18 different species of 3D Wildlife targets. The targets are placed at different marked locations along the trail. Each target creates a different shooting scenario and angles to shoot from. This will be a challenging opportunity to practice and enhance your archery skills in a fun and natural environment. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and range finder that will help you become better at determining distances.

Adults are welcome but encouraged to bring a youth to utilize the course. Youth under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The start of the 3D trail is located in the wooded area east of the Andrews Farm pond. You may park in the parking area off RT 155 and follow the flagging along the fence behind the barn to the trail. There will be a mailbox at the start of the trail that will hold a hold waiver document and registration form. By signing the registration form you will also be in agreement with the hold harmless document. Participants are required to wear a florescent orange hat and vest.

Please be extremely careful and aware of your surroundings.

The following rules apply-----Must sign registration form at beginning of trail---- florescent hat and vest required----no cross bows----NO broad head/field tip target arrows only----maximum 4 in a group. Remember this realistic bow hunting practice is not just meant for hunters. It is a fun and exciting way for any archer to practice as there are no two shots that will be the same.
In the mail box is also a list of the animal 3D targets and score cards.

Programs October 3-4 at Sinnemahoning State Park

Programs October 3-4 at Sinnemahoning State Park

Autumn is upon us in the First Fork Valley; and with the cooler weather come bugling elk and beautiful fall foliage. Programs this weekend at Sinnemahoning include a guided kayak tour and a discussion of the original Pennsylvania elk as recorded by the area's earliest settlers. Eastern Elk: Historical and Anecdotal Records, Saturday, October 3, 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM . Once found throughout Pennsylvania, the now extinct Eastern Elk were one of the biggest game species in the east. Although very little biological or scientific documentation on this species exists, many of the old woodsmen and hunters left us with stories and descriptions of these elk and their natural history in the vast forests of PA. Facemasks are required. All ages welcome. Group size limited to 24 people. Pre-registration is recommended. Program will be held outdoors in the campground amphitheater.

Fall Foliage Kayak Tour Sunday, October 4, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Join Sinnemahoning State Park staff for an afternoon kayak paddle on the lake, as we look closely at the colors of fall and the natural processes that cause this dramatic change. Bring your own kayak or use one of ours. All experience levels welcome. Group size limited. Pre-registration is required by Friday, Oct. 2. Meet at the boat launch of the Lake Day Use Area. To mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19, until further notice, all programs at Sinnemahoning State Park will be held outdoors, will be limited to 25 people or less, will follow social-distancing guidelines, and will require use of face masks. All participants must wear face coverings while attending PA State Park programs.

To pre-register, or for more information, please visit the DCNR Calendar of Events http://events.dcnr.pa.gov. If you need assistance with online registration, please call the park office 814-647-8401 and dial 0 for the front desk.
