New Geologic Survey Collection

Search for Cameron County!

Almost 5,000 Historical Photographs Available on New Geologic Survey Collection

The Pennsylvania Geologic Survey’s historical photograph collection is now available in a new and updated format. The public can continue to search, view, and download photographs from the bureau’s collection -- of which there are more than 4,600.

The Historical Photographs collection includes photographs taken by bureau geologists and staff dating as far back as the 1920s. Photographs depict a wide range of topics, including geologic features, cities and towns, and the state’s quarrying, mining, and oil and gas industries.

Browse the collection and look back to see how Pennsylvania’s landscape has changed over the years, and to see some of the quarries, mines, and oil wells that helped to shape Pennsylvania’s economy in the 20th century.

It’s that time of the year! Spring is here, even though we have some up and down weather.
It’s the perfect time to get your machines prepped, serviced and ready to ride.

Don’t wait till the sun is shinning to have your machine gone over! We offer basic and complete services on all machines. Don’t forget to be protected either, we have a vast selection of riding apparel, helmets, and protective gear! Rotary News

Metal detecting was the topic at the Rotary luncheon meeting March 30th. With their love for history, the outdoors, and adventure, locals, Kent & Wendy Davis, metal detect lost towns, old homesteads, farm fields, and just about anywhere people may have left something behind, giving clues to who they were and how they lived. The couple displayed many of the items they have found over the years.

Kent started “Dirt Digging PA” in October of 2014. The group now has over 3,100 members. Ken & Wendy also host an annual “Dirt Digging PA” metal detecting hunt at the fairgrounds with folks coming from around the United States and Canada. Kent & Wendy are the son-in-law and daughter of Rotarian, Linda Reid. Also pictured is Kent & Wendy’s son, Bryan Reid.

Guy & Mary Felt Manor Update

This year as we roll into another Easter season dealing with COVID, we pause to reflect how this pandemic has challenged not only how we live and work, but the impact it has on families and the sacrifices they have made and continue to make. We here at Felt Manor have seen the smiles as visitors entered the facility for the first time in months. Families being able to touch and see their loved one in person…..what a heartwarming sight.

We are all itching to get back to our existence prior to COVID taking everything away. We will rise…..but we must be cautious…..so as not to fall right back down. As the community starts to open back up, remember to continue taking steps to reduce your exposure: -Get the vaccine when it is your turn -wash your hands -wear a face covering when out in public -practice social distancing -stay home if you are sick Felt Manor has diligently worked to keep COVID out of the facility.

Our last reported resident positive COVID was 12/28/2020. Last reported staff member that tested positive was 1/25/21.

Please be mindful and do not schedule a visit if you are sick or have been around a COVID positive person. Easter along with spring is a reminder that all things are new. In the spirit of Easter, be more empathetic, more aware of the needs of others, and ready to face the challenges as they arise. We at Felt Manor wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Easter.

 Sincerely, Kimberly Jones Administrator

Road Cleanup a Success

CameronCounty OutdoorYouth Activites

The road clean-up organized by Bucktail Watershed, Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities and Mountaineer Search and Rescue was a success. Several people braved the wet day to participate in this year’s event. This is a wonderful community event and the clean-up helps showcase our area for the many people that will visit Cameron County for the Canoe and Kayak Race event on April 10. Thanks to Penn DOT for providing the bags, gloves, and vests and for hauling away trash that was collected. Thanks also to the CCHS students that came out to help as well.

So thankful to these groups that continue to work together to make Cameron County a better place!

Rotary News

Rotary News

Jackie Rosenberger (middle), daughter of Rotarians, John & Paige Rosenberger, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting March 23rd. Jackie is a 2014 Chambersburg PA High School graduate, completed her undergraduate studies at Shippensburg and was awarded her master’s degree in 2020 from the University of Georgia.

The subject of her program was Deer Study in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Northern Georgia. The National Forest covers 3 times the land of Cameron County. The study was conduced due to a recent 64% decline in the deer population. Only buck licenses are issued and zero buck were taken in this national forest in 2020. The study looked at predators, natural selection and competition for food. The known predators are coyote, bear and bobcats with the feral hog population competing for food. The results of this extensive study indicted that the coyote ranks #1 in the killing of the deer, particularly the fawn population. The bear rank #2 and the bobcat had only 1 confirmed fawn kill, ranking #3,. The results are supported by DNA sampling of the saliva of species that was left on collected killed deer carcasses.

March Food Distribution -Cameron County Community Food Pantry

Due to the corona virus outbreak, and operating with concern for the health of our clients, the Cameron County Food Pantry will be operating on the following schedule. The food distribution scheduled for March 24, 2021 at 1pm will be accomplished with the following changes. If you are unemployed or have had a reduction in work hours due to the corona virus, you are eligible for this food distribution. Please call Dave Malize at 814-486-1161 Ext 269 and pre-register.

Clients from the Emporium Arms and Maple Street Apartments will receive food delivered Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 10:00 am. On Wednesday, March 24, the regular Food Pantry distribution will be at the usual 1:00 pm time on Fourth Street in front of Northern Tier Community Action.

South Poplar Street will be closed to Food Pantry vehicular traffic. Clients with cars are asked to stage on Fourth Street in the spaces available between Vine Street and Poplar Street. You will be directed when to pull forward to the space in front of Northern Tier to receive your box. Please be patient while we try to get everyone through as quickly as possible. A volunteer will take your name and another will place your box(es) in your car (do not get out of your car) and you can then pull out as traffic allows, allowing the next vehicle to move up. If you are not able to get in line with your car, please just drive around the block and come back.

PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK TRAFFIC ON FOURTH STREET!

If you normally walk to the Food Pantry, you will also get your food box on Fourth Street. We will have a specific walk-up location for you to be served. Please wait there to be served and keep two arms lengths distance from others who may be in line for distribution. If you are sick or have a health issue that prevents you from coming out, or if you have questions, please call Dave Malize at 814-486-1161 Ext 269 and we will arrange to get your food to you. Please do not come out if you are sick!

Your cooperation is expected. Please be patient during this process. We will get through this by working together. PLEASE NOTE: Esther’s Place behind the Emporium First United Methodist Church continues to do a weekly distribution each Monday from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/410285490280993

814 Area Code Dialing Begins April 3

Mandatory 10-digit dialing for all telephone calls in the current 814 area code begins Saturday, April 3. If you forget and try to make a call using only seven digits, you'll get a recording asking you to hang up and to make the call again using the phone number plus area code.

This is in preparation for the arrival of a new “overlay” area code – 582 – which will eventually serve side-by-side with the current 814 area code. The 582 area code will be assigned to new telephone numbers once the available supply of numbers in the current 814 area code is exhausted.

Devices that should be checked to verify they are configured for 10-digit dialing, include:

👉 Mobile phones, landline phones & tablets and fax machines that can save/store phone numbers.
 ðŸ‘‰ Life-safety & medical alert systems.
👉 Alarm/security systems and security gates.
 ðŸ‘‰ Call-forwarding settings & voicemail services.
👉 Internet dial-up systems.
👉 Automatic dialing equipment & software.
 ðŸ‘‰ Speed-dialers.
ðŸ‘‰ Any other device that can save, store and automatically dial phone numbers.

Barbara Moscato Brown Library Launches a “Create with Our Card Catalog Contest”

Barbara Moscato Brown Library Launches a
“Create with Our Card Catalog Contest” Friday, March 19, 2021

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to announce the “Create with Our Card Catalog Contest” beginning Monday, March 22, 2021 and running through May 31, 2021.

The contest is open to all ages and 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place prizes will be awarded in Adult, Teen, and Youth categories. Prizes include hundreds of dollars in gift certificates to Thing-a-majig, Sheetz and the Chamber, along with prize baskets containing local crafts, books, and lots of other goodies.

“This is by far our biggest contest ever,” said Librarian Yelena Kisler.

Participants will use the library’s discarded Card Catalog cards to create any type of art they like, this includes, but is not limited to, painting on the cards, using them for collages, paper folding, macramé, or anything else participants decide to come up with. The only requirement is that the cards are the primary medium for the art.

Those interested in participating can pick up a bag with a stack of Library Catalog Cards along with a submission form (inside the bag of cards) at the library and use them as a medium to create art of any type. Juvenile entries must have form signed by a parent. There is no limit to the number of cards participants can use, and there are no restrictions on what can be done with the cards, however, lewd or racist imagery will not be considered. Individuals may submit as many entries as desired.

Entries received after Monday, May 31, 2021 will not be eligible for prizes, but may still be displayed by library. Art submitted without entry form below will not be considered. All entries must be the entrant’s original work.

Artwork will not be returned. By submitting, you are giving the Library permission to sell and redistribute your artwork as desired. Artist credit will always be given. The library will be posting ideas for card crafts throughout the length of the contest on social media.

For questions or if you are interested in donating a prize, email the library at brocampl@zitomedia.net, or call 814-486-8011 during the library’s regular business hours.
