Robert George Pleak

Robert George Pleak
March 20,1948 - April 8, 2026

Bob was born on March 20 1948, an event he shared with his twin Mary Ann. In addition to his wife Joanne, and Mary Ann, he is survived by his siblings E. Jane Pleak, George Ann (Jo) Pleak and Andrew Pleak. He is also survived by his sister “Mar’s” children: Jesse (Anyango), Dan (Lila) and Betsy Weber (Ethan), as well as by Joanne’s extended family. He recently became a great uncle to Dan and Lila’s baby girl, Cameron.

He spent his early years in Emporium, Pennsylvania, where he enjoyed all the freedom the 1950s allowed. He was a member of the Cameron County High School Marching Band and a competitive marksman with the Sylvania Rifle Team. He was a sportsman and loved the mountains. Bob served as a Catholic Altar Server in his youth. He graduated from Cameron County High School in 1966 and joined the United States Air Force in 1969.

Bob served in the USAF Security Service Command until 1973, leaving with the rank of Sergeant. He received the Air Medal w/2 OLCs; Small Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Vietnam Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The Air Force discovered he had an ear for languages, and he spoke and wrote 4 dialects of Chinese, with a smattering of other Asian languages. After leaving the Air Force, Bob spent several years traveling. He walked the Appalachian Trail and then found his traveling van, Sweet Louise. He settled in the Aspen area and became a logger and later headed to California where he worked at his Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Byron’s ranch. He visited the Great Wall of China and went to Tahiti for a ham radio conference. During his traveling days, he delivered two babies—one in Texas and one in the mountains of Colorado.

Bob then settled in San Francisco where he continued his education and received his BA San Francisco State, International Relations, Chinese and Geology; ASET at Hartnell College Electronic Technology and Administration of Justice/San Francisco Police Academy. He worked as an armed private security for the SF 49ers. Bob loved language and taught English as a second language before joining the US Post Office. He worked for the US Post Office as a Manager for the IT Computer Dept. handling tech issues in San Jose. He also taught at Hartnell College as a computer repair instructor.

He met the love of his life, Joanne, strolling on the Hartnell campus. They married at La Playa Hotel at Carmel-by-the-Sea and then settled in Salinas. For the next 30 years his chief delight was surprising his Joanne with flowers, chocolates, dinners—and dogs. Their first dogs were Border Collies, Maggie Mae and Katie Ann, that he excelled in training. Poppy O’Sullivan another Border Collie rescue became his Dock Diving trainee and frisbee expert. He always had an eye out for abused or abandoned dogs. Bob was often found working with local police, fire and rescue agencies to rehome or get to dog rescues to a safe place. He was a big advocate for Border Collie Rescue and K9 Training.

Bob became an active amateur HAM radio operator at twelve, building his first radio receiver with his father’s assistance. He volunteered with police and fire departments during emergencies keeping the main phone lines open. He spoke to people worldwide, always delighting when he could use his language skills. Always a spokesperson for his community safety, Bob served on the Salinas Airport Commission for five years to help with needs of the Salinas Airport and supported the California Airshow activities where he resided.

He and Joanne enjoyed visiting the national parks throughout the states, with Yosemite being a favorite destination. Another of Bob’s interests was genealogy and following his family tree, traveling to destinations of where the “Pleak” family originated. There is a town in Texas called Pleak,Texas, where he instantly because friends with the local fire department when he corrected their pronunciation of the name—it’s Pleak as in steak, not Pleak as in meek.

As retirement loomed, so did his PTSD. He was fortunate to be able to obtain a service dog Shao DiDi (Little Brother) who became his constant companion. Bob trained with Shao DiDi at Operations Freedom Paws in San Martin. Bob did volunteer work with the dog organization donating his time for support.

Bob took his dream road trip to the Viet Nam Memorial (the Wall) in Washington, D.C., traveling with fellow veterans to its dedication, and then took a final pilgrimage trip alone with his service dog Shao Didi.

A memorial service will be held at Struve & Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA on Monday, April 20, 2026. Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, 2900 Parker Flats Cut Off Road, Seaside, CA.

Donations, if desired, may be made to Operation Freedom Paws; 777 First St; PMB515; Gilroy, CA 95020.

PA Wilds Launches Local News Surveys in Nine Rural Counties

PA Wilds launches local news surveys in nine rural counties.

How do you find out what's happening in your community?
Let's talk about it.

You may see me with my clipboard at farmers’ markets and festivals, asking questions about local news as part of my work with Press Forward PA Wilds, housed at Centre Foundation.
Press Forward is a national initiative to strengthen local news and ensure communities have access to reliable news and trusted information.
Through regional efforts like Press Forward PA Wilds, the program supports local reporters, expands coverage, and helps residents stay informed and connected.

Our first step as a Press Forward chapter is to better understand what sort of news and information people in the PA Wilds currently have, which sources they trust, and what they need. As part of an ongoing listening tour around communities in our nine north central counties, we've also launched a brief on-line survey to gather input from you and your neighbors.

We know that for some folks in the PA Wilds, the news environment is more in-person than digital. Access to affordable and reliable internet remains a challenge. According to the 2023 PA Department of Community and Economic Development Broadband Survey, even when broadband is available 52% found it difficult to pay for what they can get. Additionally, 11% of rural Pennsylvanians do not have any internet service available and 20% say the speed is too slow. Furthermore, 25% use capped or pay-as-you-go cellphone data plans.

In conversations across the region, I’ve heard from folks in Elk and Cameron counties who still rely on dialup, and to people in Clinton county who must leave their property in the mountains to get a decent cell signal on their phones. That's why our survey asks about both affordability and reliability of broadband access. Understanding the reality of digital access in the PA Wilds will help us bridge the digital divide.

I've spoken to publishers in small, local papers throughout the PA Wilds. They consistently emphasize how vital local news is to the success and identity of small towns, while also sharing the challenges they face in recruiting and retaining reporters in rural communities.

Now, it’s time to hear from you, the residents. We want to know which outlets you turn to for local news and what topics matter most to you, and how you prefer to receive information. Understanding what you value in local news will help us support news outlets in ways that serve you best.

Local news doesn't spread only from the media, it also flows from the people around you, through conversations with family and neighbors, the places where you gather and meet, and from sources on social media. That's why our survey asks about a list of possible sources. Understanding who you turn to will help us figure out how to support local news that you want and trust.

Local news becomes especially important in critical moments, during emergencies, public health notices, or when you're making important choices for your family. That's why our survey asks about your experience finding local information in situations, like during water-boil notices and other urgent events. Identifying gaps in access to timely, reliable information will help us to bridge those gaps across the region. Let us hear from you.
Take the local news on-line survey. Your opinion matters.

For those who prefer connecting face-to-face, Press Forward PA Wilds is organizing a hosted coffee and breakfast from 8:00 am until 9:30 am on Friday, May 1.
The event will be held at Aroma Café 6 East 4th Steet in downtown Emporium.
Please note that registration for this is limited, so be sure to secure your spot early.
To attend, simply fill out the registration form: https://tinyurl.com/PFEmporium
Guests will also receive an $8 Nittany Mini Mart gift card.

Camp Bighorn Scholarship Recipient

Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities is proud to congratulate Cora Olay as the recipient of this year’s Camp Bighorn Scholarship.

This summer, Cora will travel to Dubois, Wyoming to spend an unforgettable week immersed in hands-on outdoor education and adventure. Camp Bighorn is known for providing young people with meaningful experiences that build confidence, conservation ethics, and lifelong outdoor skills.

During the weeklong program, Cora will participate in a wide range of activities including archery, kayaking, hiking, fly fishing, and the study of wild edible and medicinal plants through ethnobotany. These experiences are designed to connect youth with nature while teaching practical skills, stewardship, and personal growth.

Opportunities like this scholarship are made possible through the support of our community and the shared belief that investing in youth today builds the outdoor leaders of tomorrow. We are incredibly proud of Cora and can’t wait to hear about the knowledge, memories, and inspiration she brings home.

Please join us in congratulating Cora Olay on this exciting achievement and wishing her an amazing adventure in Wyoming!

Emporium Rotary Club News

Emporium Rotary Club
This week, Rotarian Chris Andrews spoke to our club about the PA Forest Product Association, of which she recently became a board member. The PFPA originally began as the Hardwood Lumber Manufacturing Association in the 1980.

The HLMA was created by sawmill owners who decided to work together to try to make beneficial changes to laws and regulations within their industry. Over the years, the HMLA expanded to include members from other sectors of the industry - loggers, foresters, secondary manufacturers such as cabinet makers, and more - and in 2003, they formally changed their name to the PA Forest Product Association.

The original goal of the group still continues today through the PFPA, by collaborating on ideas and issues as well as lobbying in Harrisburg for legislative changes. They also help within the industry for some of the more challenging tasks such as easements, bonding, permitting, etc.

Chris also shared a few facts about the lumber industry:
- It is around a $39 billion industry in Pennsylvania that provides over 60,000 jobs in PA.
 - Over 1 billion board feet are produced in PA annually.

The lumber industry overall also focuses heavily on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Chris also pointed to Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group as another resource for the lumber industry in our region. AHUG helps to send some of the Emporium Hardwoods employees to various trainings such as lumber grading classes.
You may recognize AHUG from our Rotary Day last year as they provided an educational activity for the students to identify trees and how to scale logs.

If you haven't followed this new CC Site, please do!
Created by local resident Emily Costanzo, this sites mission in to reach as many people as possible & let them know what Cameron County businesses have to offer! We are trying to reach as many potential customers and visitors to our area as possible. Please share this group with a friend, even if they live elsewhere. We would love to have more visitors in CamCo and even if they don't stop by, many of our artisans will ship Business owners - don't forget that you are able to join and post in this group using your business page.
