Prescribed Fire @ Sinnemahoning State Park

Sinnemahoning State Park

On April 25th, 2024 a prescribed fire was conducted to aid in the reclamation of the former White Spruce Plantation site, near the 40 Maples Day Use Area. Fire in an ecosystem has many benefits including, reducing hazardous fuels, lessening the spread of pests (such as ticks) and diseases, removing invasive species, encouraging the growing of native plants, improving food availability and habitat for wildlife, recycling nutrients and fertilizing soil to name a few!

Rotary Club of Emporium Meet a Member Monday: Karen Jiang

Rotary Club of Emporium Meet a Member Monday:

This week, we are highlighting Rotarian, Karen Jiang.
Karen became a Rotarian in March 2012. She currently serves as our club’s Grant Management Chair. A large portion of her duty on this committee is to apply for grants and help the club decide what to use the funding for. One of the most recent grant projects was funding the planting project at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor, a project that she also helps to manage each year. Karen is also a Paul Harris Fellow. Karen is an active volunteer at the food pantry each month and in addition to Rotary, she is a member of the Sylvan Heritage Council https://www.sylvanheritagecouncil.org/.

A message from Karen: “During the twelve years I have been a Rotarian I have learned much about our town, its people, and our area in our weekly speaker programs. It has been so rewarding to be part of an organization that works hard to make our town a better place by giving back in so many ways: scholarships, donations, roadway cleanup, and many more too numerous to mention. Most important are the friends I have made along this journey.
We welcome others to join our Club.”

CC Farmers Market Introduces D’s Queen Bees

Cameron County Farmers Market
Today’s vendors are sure to sweeten your day, we are delighted to welcome Dylan & Ashley Major with D’s Queen Bees back to the market again this year!

A popular favorite for the past couple of years, Dylan and Ashley are apiarists from Port Allegany who produce a large variety of products made from the honey and beeswax that their bees produce. Dylan concentrates on the edible products including Cinnamon Flavored Creamed Honey, Reaper Honey, Hot Garlic Honey as well as chunks of honey comb dripping with delicious honey straight from the hives! Ashley has created an eclectic line of beeswax products that range from lip balms, salves and soaps to wood polish, candy and wax melts. Whatever you’re looking for there is something there for everyone!

Dylan is the bee caretaker and looks after the 100 or so hives that they have in various locations in the surrounding countryside. It’s a lot of work, especially in the spring and early summer when the bees are the busiest. He clocks in about 40 hours a week looking after them, and that’s on top of his full-time job! This passion for his bees reaps great results as they now sell their products in many stores, restaurants and at markets and events in several neighboring counties. They have even bigger plans though and hope to expand their growing business to 300-350 hives by this coming fall!

A couple of fun facts about bees: did you know that the honey bee is the only insect that makes food man can eat? And not only does it taste amazing, it can also make you smarter as it contains an antioxidant that improves brain functions! That’s quite literally food for thought!

Come and visit Dylan & Ashley at our first market of the season on Saturday, May 11th, 9am to 12pm at the Emporium Town Square and grab some sweetness for yourself!

Guy E. Moscato

Guy E. Moscato, 92, of Sylvan Heights, Emporium passed away Saturday morning, April 27 after a brief stay at Guy and Mary Felt Manor. He was born in DuBois on December 30, 1931.

His life can be defined by an unwavering commitment to family and a love for life that included a multitude of interests. Beginning at an early age and aided by his grandfather was a love for animals, especially his ever present and faithful collies having nine in total over his adult life.

Guy moved with his family to Emporium in 1939 where his father operated Moscato's shoe repair and he and his mother ran a pet shop. He graduated from Emporium High School in 1950 and the Pennsylvania State University in 1955 with a degree in chemistry. He was employed by Hooker Chemical and then Occidental Petroleum in Niagara Fall, NY until his retirement in 1989. Despite the distance he made it a priority to drive home every weekend to enjoy time with family, his dogs and his hobbies.

He would take classes or read manuals to hone the skills for those hobbies which include, flowers, tomatoes, upholstery, hatching and raising canaries and parakeets, home repair, fishing, biking, hiking, rebuilding player pianos and eventually restoring MG British automobiles of which he did frame off complete restoration on six total project cars. If Guy didn't know how to do something he would read or ask someone for tips, which is how he met and became friends with Lance Lewis who shared his enthusiasm for antique cars.

In his golden years, he stayed active and cherished time with his great nephews and nieces, particularly Vinnie and Kacie Brown, Bobbi and Sophie Fragale, and Marcus, Dino, Hayden, and Jax Brown, who joined him weekly for Sunday spaghetti at noon.

Guy is survived by a brother William Moscato along with nephews and nieces Guy and Tony Moscato, David, Julie, Steve (Staci) Brown, Nancy (Brown) Fragale and Lori and Paul Moscato.

He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Moscato and his sisters Pauline Moscato and Barbara (Moscato) Brown as well as two nephews Paul Moscato and Michael Moscato.

A private viewing will be held for family with a graveside service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library, building fund, or the Cameron County SPCA, 678 South Mountain Rd., Emporium, PA 15834.
