Mitchell Peasley Lewis

Mitchell Peasley Lewis, 70, of St. Marys (formerly of Emporium) passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023 after a long battle with many health issues.
Mitchell was born October 31, 1952 in Hammond, IN to June (Peasley) and Verne Lewis. His family moved to Smethport his senior year, and he graduated from Smethport Area High School in 1971. November 10, 1973 he married Willie Schwab Lewis who survives.

Mitch retired from Motor Coils Manufacturing/GE where he was employed for 38 years. Mitch enjoyed playing and watching sports of all kinds, especially his beloved Cubs. Before his strokes, Mitch could often be found on the golf course or the bowling alley. He enjoyed dining out and always took his family on adventures to amusement parks, ball games, and road trips.

In addition to his wife, Mitchell is survived by his two daughters, Heather (Clinton) Szuba and Ashley Armstrong; grandchildren Morgan Barnhart, Natalee Uber, Fisher Szuba, Tucker Szuba, and Ashton Fowler; sisters Denise (Cory) Glickman and Debbie (Mike) Enders; brother Lance (Loretta) Lewis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dale Lewis; and a sister, Jeanne Southers.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mitch to the Emporium or St. Marys Ambulance Associations.

The family will hold a drop-in luncheon memorial at Aroma Cafe in Emporium on Friday, February 10, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm. Please stop in, share a bite to eat and swap stories with us in remembrance of Mitch.

Newton Cemetary Update

 Newton Cemetary

Recently this information was shared on a Facebook post.

Newton Cemetery needs help Caretakers of Newton Cemetery, located just east of Emporium, continue a fundraising drive to address maintenance needs and planned improvements. The cemetery’s trust fund balance has been declining while the needs are rising. New mowing equipment is needed and roads must be repaired. The 23-acre cemetery also needs water access and clearance of fallen trees. Generations of Cameron County residents, including veterans from the Civil War and all subsequent wars, are buried in Newton Cemetery. The property was formerly used as farmland and as a picnic area. Plots remain available for prices that cover perpetual maintenance and a registered deed.

After contacting the board of directors at Newton Cemetary, this is their reply

Early in 2021 we reached our goal for the fund drive that focused on road repair, tree removal and lawn equipment, and a Thank You letter was put in the Echo. We continue to accept memorials and donations that help to cover the normal maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery, since our income from the sale of burial plots is not enough to cover our expenses.

Ice Rink Grand Opening
The ice rink in downtown Emporium will have its grand opening Sunday February 5.

The rink was installed and filled over the past week. Representatives from the Cameron County chamber of Commerce and Smoker Logging hope the sub-freezing temperatures will create the perfect conditions for skating.
Those with skates to swap, loan or sell are invited to be at the downtown rink Sunday at noon. Fire rings will be stacked with wood, and grills will be available for those wishing to bring hot dogs. Rich Valley Wines will have their downtown location open for warm drinks.
