Sinnamahoning Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Service
Today, National Wildland Firefighter Day is designed to recognize the hard work and devotion of all wildland firefighters and support personnel who are the backbone of the wildland fire community.
We are especially grateful for all of our firefighters here at Company 16.
The day also serves as an opportunity to renew our commitment to wildland firefighter safety as we remember all those who have fallen in the line of duty.
Today and always we remember the 8 men who lost their lives battling The Pepper Hill Fire right here in Sinnamahoning, 88 years ago.
Gilbert Mohney, 38.
Basil Bogush, 19.
John Boring, 19.
Howard May, 18.
Andrew Stefphanic, 18.
Ross Hollobaugh, 18.
Stephen Jacofsky, 17.
George Vogel, 16.
So today, we ask that you take a moment and read about a piece of Cameron County History and remember these brave young men.
The events surrounding this tragedy, are still taught by the Pennsylvania Forestry Department during their firefighting training. This event forever changed fire operations and tactics. The ongoing training which stemmed from this event has no doubt saved many lives nationwide.
