Emporium Area Accidents

An Emporium woman and her passenger sustained  minor injuries in a crash on January 20, 2012 at 1:46 a.m. on Route 120 in Shippen Township.
Jody L. Wiltrout, 27, and her passenger, Dennis M. Cressley, 52, both of Emporium, PA, were assisted at the scene by Emporium Ambulance but were not transported for their injuries.
Wiltrout was arrested for DUI and Driving Vehicle At Safe Speed.
Trooper Craig D. Heim, who investigated, said the crash occurred as Wiltrout was driving a 2006 Ford Ranger west on snow covered SR 120. She lost control of the pickup and it traveled off the south side of the roadway and struck a utility pole before going over an embankment.

An Emporium man and his passenger were not injured when their 2001 Ford Escape crashed into a mailbox post on icy Gardeau Road, 2.2 miles west of Rt. 155 on Saturday at 10:10 pm. Both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts.
Paul T. Griffith, 19, of Emporium, PA was traveling west on Gardeau Road lost control of the vehicle on the slippery roadway, traveled across the opposite side of the roadway and struck a mailbox post on the opposite side of the road.
Neither Griffith or his passenger Robert Banks, 19, of Emporium was injured.
Trooper Michael W. Smith stated that no charges were placed.

William Anthony Villella,

William Anthony Villella, 63 of West Andover, Ohio passed into the arms of his Savior, surrounded by his family and friends after a long, hard battle with metastatic prostate cancer on Friday January 27, 2012.

Born October 1, 1948 in St. Mary's, Pa., Bill grew up in nearby Emporium. He was the son of the late James Villella (died 1976) and Genevieve Villella. He is survived by his wife Nora Ames Villella, his children - Rachel Villella of Evans City, Pa. and Douglas (Amber) Villella and granddaughter Natalia of Aliquippa, Pa. Also survived by his mother Genevieve of Emporium, Pa. - sisters Patricia Villella, Virginia (Karl) Kelm - and his nephew Brian - all of Erie, Pa., half-brother James (Monica) Ludwig of Keating Summit, Pa., and half sister Marian (Jack) Barrett of Augusta, Ga. - plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill's dream of becoming a pharmacist was realized when he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. In 1989, he completed courses at Rorer Managed Care Institute at Kellogg Business School of Northwestern University. He was a licensed, registered pharmacist in New York State as well as in Pennsylvania.

Bill was published for the Evaluation of Warfarin Therapy in a Managed Care Setting in 1996 and for the Pharmacoeconomics of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in a Managed Care Organization along with several of his colleagues. He was employed by Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester, N.Y. from 1971-1973. While at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA 1973 -1975 Bill worked in the capacity of Supervisor of Pharmacy Technicians and IV Additives.

In 1975 Bill met and married Nora Ames of Andover, Ohio. She was one of the IV therapy nurses employed by the hospital and on January 31, 2012 they would have celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary.

From 1975-1992 he was the Associate Director of Pharmacy at Rochester Medical Group Association. In 1992 he accepted and became the Director of Pharmaceutical Services for Health America in Pittsburgh, PA until 1996. From 1996-1998, Bill was employed by Parke-Davis/Warner Lambert as Healthcare Management Senior Medical Liaison. From 1998-2002, Immunex/Amgen hired him as a Senior Manager Medical Liaison where he won several awards including a trip to Rome. Most recently Bill worked for Novartis Pharmaceuticals as Director Managed Market East/South and Therapeutic Team Director Bone/HRT/URO from 2002 until 2011.

His proudest accomplishment was raising two children, his son Douglas A. Villella and Rachel L. Villella and joyfully watching them become responsible adults. Also his granddaughter Natalia born in 2008 was the pride of his golden age and she brought him three years of love and enjoyment. Bill loved kidding and tormenting family, friends and total strangers. His favorite joke to cajole waitresses was to order "a bowl of chicken, easy on the bananas" or tell them their earrings didn't match. He enjoyed winter's arrival to feed the many birds that would frequent his feeders.

Driving his Rhino ATV across the empty fields and railroad tracks was exceptionally fun for him. He especially enjoyed it when accompanied by his cousins, nephews and neighbors. He was an avid weather watcher and was teased constantly by those who knew him that he was a frustrated weatherman and had 'missed his calling'. Semi-annually he would fish with his buddies after driving deep into Canada's interior, and return home with his quota of walleye to prepare a shore dinner for his family. He enjoyed camping in the 5th wheeler he purchased in 1992. He loved target shooting, driving his sport cars, and appreciating the outdoors. But most of all, he loved spending time with his children, grand-child, nieces, nephews, neighbors and church family.

Bill treasured traveling with Nora to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and most of the United States. They toured Alaska in June and July of 2011 on a land-cruise. He was an avid cook, and attempted to duplicate the many delicious dishes consumed on those trips. Since his illness began, he could be found restoring his 1972 Corvette as well as tidying up and mowing the five acres of the 50 he lived on in Andover, Ohio. He worshipped at Bethel Bible Church in Jefferson, Ohio. for the last 3½ years. He was an extremely generous person, and had many opportunities to help people over the years. He was loved and will be deeply missed.

A funeral service celebrating Bill's life will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 12:00 Noon at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect St., Andover, Ohio, with Pastor Joseph Laing of Bethel Bible Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover, Ohio. Calling hours will be on Monday, January 30th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and also on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Margaret L. Hornung, 95

Margaret L. Hornung, 95, of Emeritus, 2009 Rosebank Way, Hagerstown, Maryland formerly of 413 Vine, Emporium, died at Emeritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, Maryland on Sunday evening.

She was born October 13, 1916 in DuBois a daughter of the late William E. and Dorothy Brissee Droney.

She was married to the late George F. Hornung. Her first husband was William Caseino who died in 1948. Mrs. Hornung graduated from SS. Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, Punxsutawney. She retired from Sylvania in 1979 where she had worked for many years. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

Susan V. Zito, 87, of 501 E. Second St., Emporium, died at her residence on Saturday morning.

She was born January 29, 1924 in Emporium a daughter of the late Anthony and Amelia Nicolo Zito.

Susan graduated from Emporium High School. She retired from GTE where she worked for many years. When she retired she was the only women to hold a patent at GTE Sylvania. Susan was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

Sponsored by the Clearfield YMCA, the Winter Festival features fun outdoor activities for the entire family to enjoy and participate in.

The two-day festival begins on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. with the Snow Bowl Flag Football Tournament. Interested teams must be pre-registered, and can do so by contacting the YMCA. Other scheduled activities on Saturday include programs on Ice Fishing Basics at 11:00 a.m., Winter Bird Feeding at 1:00 p.m., Owls at 2:00 p.m., and Snowshoeing Basics at 3:00 p.m.

 Then, on Sunday, January 29 the festival will gear up again at 9:00 a.m. with the Hilltop Howlers organizing a Snowmobile Fun Run at Pavilion 7, and an Ice Harvesting demonstration on the lake at 11:00 a.m. Between noon and 2:00 p.m., there will be many other activities for the whole family such as, Snowshoeing, Snow Box Derby, Frozen Salami Sling, a Learn to Cross-country Ski program, and a Snowman Contest.
 Other events on Sunday afternoon include the Almost Naked Mile Run at 3:00 p.m., where participants will run a mile in their bathing suits.
 The Winter Festival’s grand finale will again be the Polar Bear Swim scheduled at 4:00 p.m.

 The YMCA will also run a concession stand out of the Beach House throughout Winter Festival. Several events, including the Polar Bear Swim, require pre-registration with the YMCA. To check on an event or to pre-register, contact the YMCA at (814) 765-5521.

 Some events will be dependent on snow or ice conditions; however, most will take place in any weather conditions. Visitors can also enjoy the outdoors all Winter Festival weekend (and all winter) with many traditional winter activities.

 When conditions permit, Parker Dam State Park maintains 2 cross-country ski loops, totaling about 5.5-miles, a maintained ice skating rink, and a sledding hill. Snowshoeing the many miles of trails is also a popular activity at the park, as well as ice fishing the 20-acre lake.

 So bundle up and come on out to Parker Dam with the entire family to enjoy a weekend of great fun and activities!

Ann Z. Malizia, 91, of 405 N. Pine St, Emporium, died  at Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys on Monday, January 23, 2012 morning.

 She was born August 19, 1920 in Sykesville, a daughter of the late  John and Theresa Martinek Zbailey. She married the late John M.  Malizia

 Mrs. Malizia retired from Sylvania were she worked for over 18 years. She  later worked at the Market Basket for several years. She was a member of  St. Mark Catholic Church and had been a member of the C. D. of A. Years  ago she was active with the Emporium Little League Auxiliary.

West Branch of the Susquehanna River

National Geographic lists the West Branch of the Susquehanna River as one of the best adventure destinations for 2012!

One of the newest national recreation water trails in the country, the West Branch Susquehanna River Water Trail snakes for 228 miles through the oak, cherry, and maple hardwood forests of the Allegheny Mountains and into the habitat of the Northeast’s largest elk herd. It’s seriously wild territory, but it’s located smack in the center of Pennsylvania, within driving distance of the state’s major cities—Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this was prime timber harvesting country, and the river served as a conduit for trees heading to the Chesapeake Bay. Today, the river begins as a small stream near the town of Cherry Tree and gradually widens as it meanders through farmland, state forest, and historic towns. It eventually connects with 266 miles of other waterways that make up the entire Susquehanna Water Trail system, the largest of its kind in the country.

Plentiful state forestland means this is canoe-camping territory, but it’s also prime for day trips. Earl L. TownerJr.

Earl L. Towner Jr., 88, of Lakeland, Florida (formerly of Emporium) died on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

He was born May 14, 1923 and was the son of Veryl and Earl Towner Sr.

He is survived by his wife Jean, son Vincent of Philadelphia, a daughter, Valerie (Terry) Shelley of Emporium, two grandchildren Sherilyn (Michael) Ostrum and Scott (Angela) Knarr and three great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin and Gene and sisters Mildred Hathaway and Marie Mumford.

The Lanier Funeral Home in Lakeland Florida handled the arrangements with interment in the Bushnell Veterans Cemetery in Florida.

No cost for Wellness members.     Non-members pay $5.00.
The $5 allows for the person to attend the meeting, participate in the exercise class following the meeting and work out on the equipment that day,

Charles L. Leavitt, 81

Charles L. Leavitt, 81, of 6706 Beechwood Rd, Truman died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Monday (January 9, 2012) afternoon.
He was born October 2, 1930 in Truman a son of the late Charles and Cecil "Dolly Dill Leavitt.
On March 3, 1949 in Moore Hill United Methodist Church he married Dolores Skillman Leavitt, who Survives.
Mr. Leavitt graduated from Emporium High School. He retired from Philips where he worked for many years. Then he went to work at Caldwell Corporation for over 10 years. He was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and repairing most anything.

Mary A. Hansen, 74, of 240 Arch Drive, Emporium died at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio Monday morning (January 9, 2012) following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 14, 1937 in Beaver Falls, PA a daughter of the late Arthur and Patricia Magee Gordon.

Mary's parents moved to southern California where she lived many years. She always had Pennsylvania in her heart as she made frequent trips to Ellwood City, PA where she later lived and worked. She also enjoyed making many trips to Sinnamahoning with her late friend Bertha Bonzo. While in Sinnamahoning she met her soulmate, of 17 years, Harold Johnson. She made many friends while living in Sinnamahoning. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Eileen J. "Cissy" Wortman, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys formerly of 179 E. 4th Street, Emporium, died on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

She was born July 28, 1917 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Gervase and Kathryn Stockman Rigard.
She was married to the late Regis "Wheatie" Wortman, who preceded her in death in January of 2000.

Causer Announces Local Fire, Ambulance Grants

Cameron and surrounding counties are state grants to assist volunteer fire and emergency organizations.

Causer Announces Local Fire, Ambulance Grants

BRADFORD – Volunteer fire and emergency response organizations in Cameron, McKean and Potter counties have been awarded more than $316,000 in grants from the state, Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) announced today.

“We are so fortunate in our region to have dedicated volunteers who are willing to serve our communities,” Causer said. “These state grants will help support them in their mission of protecting the public.”

The grants were awarded to 37 fire and ambulance companies in the three-county area. The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner. All funding comes from the proceeds from slot machine gaming, and not general fund tax revenue.

 

This year’s program provided $25 million in grants statewide. Projects eligible for funding include: construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training, or reduction of existing debt.

Nancy M. Umbenhauer

Nancy M. Umbenhauer, 78, of 15 Oak Grove Lane, Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Tuesday, (December 27, 2011) afternoon.

She was born December 22, 1933 in Emporium a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Stumpff Rutz.

On July 4, 1953 in Indiana she married the late Robert W. Umbenhauer.

Mrs. Umbenhauer garduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1951 and the Bradford School of Nursing in the class of 1953. She retired from Guy and Mary Felt Manor, where she worked for many years as the nursing supervisor and later became the adminstrator and held that position for many years. Early in her career she worked for Dr. Joseph Blackburns office, at Sylvania and several other facilities. She had been a member of the former Guy and Mary Felt Manor Auxilliary.

Mary ELizabeth Hornung Lewis, 95, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium died at the Manor on Thursday morning (December 22, 2011).

She was born April 25, 1916 in Emporium a daughter of the late George and Anna Glasl Hornung.

On July 13, 1939 in Emporium she married the late Lawrence Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker all of her life and a lifelong member of St. Mark Church. She enjoyed reading and flowers

Joel R. Matteson,

Joel R. Matteson, 36, of Emporium, PA, formerly of Galeton, PA, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, December 19, 2011 after a lengthy stay at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.

Born December 5, 1975 in Coudersport, PA, he was a son of Michael and Kathy (Youndt) Matteson who both survive.

He was a 1994 Graduate of Galeton High School. Joel had an amazing mind and was creative and imaginative. He loved to draw and sketch, enjoyed movies, was a Harley Davidson enthusiast, and had the gift of gab.

Surviving in addition to his parents, Mike and Kathy Matteson, are a brother, Jesse (Nadia) Matteson, State College, PA; paternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Richard and Ruth Matteson, Galeton; maternal grandmother, Jeanette Youndt, Emporium; and one nephew and three nieces.

Joel was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Doris Matteson and his maternal grandfather, William Youndt.

Cash & Christmas presents stolen

Unknown actor(s) gained entry to an Emporium woman's residence by kicking open a rear door. Once inside, someone removed numerous items of value including $1,600.00 cash and numerous Christmas gifts.
The burglary occurred between Wednesday at 2:45 and 1:00 am on Thursday at the residence of Jamie Lynn Schatz located at 418 North Broad Street, across from the Municipal Building in Emporium Borough, according to a news release from Trooper Michael Smith at the Emporium Station.

Vivian L.Doerr, age 94, formerly of Niagara Falls, New York and Ormond  Beach, Florida, diedTuesday, December 13, 2011, in Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.

BornOctober 15, 1917 in Tionesta, she was the daughter of William and Rebecca MannLucas.  On March 18, 1960 in Niagara  Falls, NY she marriedFlorian Doerr who died May 24, 1997.

Havingrelocated to Emporium from Ormond  Beach, Mrs. Doerr had been a resident of this area for11 years.

Survivorsinclude: a son, Robert Westefield of Niagara Falls,NY; a daughter Marsha (Bob) Patros ofEmporium; a stepson, Florian (Trina) Doerr, Jr. of Columbia, SC;a stepdaughter, Arlene (Jack) Moore of Youngstown, NY; two grandchildren; fourgreat grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and several nieces andnephews.

In additionto her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and fourbrothers.

There wereno visitations.

Duane A. Buerk

Duane A. Buerk, 50, of 905 Edgerly Lane, Pflugerville, Texas formerly of Emporium died unexpectedly at his residence in Pflugerville Wednesday (December 14, 2011) afternoon.

He was born September 26, 1961 in St. Marys a son of the late Roman "Romie" and Ruth Luchs Buerk.

Duane graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1979 and then attended the University of Texas majoring in electronics. He resided in Texas for the past 25 years. He worked at Abbott Laboratory/Hospira for 16 years as a warehouse Technician and specialist where he maintained a 99% inventory accuracy throughout the warehouse. He served on the Emergency Response Team for 16 years and completed the ECA Certification and was also an EMT. Duane was very knowledgeable in the stock market. He loved his family and enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing.

Robert C. Jack

Robert C. Jack, 86, a resident of Felt Manor Living,Emporium, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in his home.

Born September 4, 1925 in Ridgway, he was the son of Bruce and Myrtle Duffee Jack.  On July 18, 1953 in Ridgway he married Verle M. Jack who died March 5, 1997.  On June 27, 1998 in Emporium, he married Florence Anna Stoltz who survives.

Mr. Jack was a veteran of WWII having served as an electricians mate in the US Navy.

After returning home from the service he received a degree in electrical engineering from Penn State DuBois.

A resident of Emporium for 60 years, he was employedas an electronics engineer by GTE Sylvania in Emporium retiring in 1983. For many years he was a driver for the Cameron County Ambulance Service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Churchin Emporium and a member of the church choir, Emporium Men’s Club,Cameron County Snowmobile Association, Bucktail RVers, the Singing Dutchmen of St Marys, Emporium Masonic Lodge #382 F&AM and he was a Shriner.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: a son, Kevin R.(Debbie) Jack of Driftwood; a daughter, Karen (Dan) Abbott of Bradford; five grandchildren; a brother, Clyde A.Jack of Ridgway, and several nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by seven step children, 26 step grandchildren and 7 great step grandchildren.

Visitations with video tribute will be held Friday,December 16 in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium from 4-7 pm at which time a Masonic Memorial Service will follow.

Funeral and Committal Services will be held at 11 am Saturday in the FirstUnited MethodistChurch, Emporium with theRev. Gary Atkinson, pastor,officiating.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Cameron CountyMemorial Detail.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery,Emporium.

Andew A. Richnafsky

Andew A. Richnafsky, 94, of 22 S. Cherry St, Emporium on died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium on Tuesday afternoon. (December 13, 2011)

He was born August 21, 1917 in Tower Hill, PA a son of the late Joseph and Anna Maria Pehur Richnafsky.

On May 2, 1959 in St. Mark Catholic Church, Emporium he married Patricia Russell Richnafsky, who Survives.

Mr. Richnafsky moved to Cameron County with the Civilian Conservation Corp's in the early 1940's. He then served with the US Army during WWII, for 5 years, with the 253rd Infantry Regiment. While in the service he received a Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, 6 Overseas Service bars, Purple Heart and European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. He retired from Sylvania in Emporium where he was a security guard over 32 years. He was a life member of the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW and the American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, Emporium, and the St. Mark Catholic Church. He enjoyed meeting his friends every morning for coffee and then went to the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library to read

Christmas In The Wilds

Last Saturday was a chilly day for all that ventured into downtown Emporium for the Christmas In The Wilds events.  Over 300 children and parents had breakfast with Santa in the fire hall.  Several vendors lined the streets selling hot chocolate, cookies, baked breads, Christmas wreaths and other items. At noon the CCHS marching band made its way through town. They were followed by Santa waving at everyone lining the streets.  It was a nice day to sample some homemade goods.

The Bauer girls are as pretty as the wreaths they sell !

The Sylvan Heritage Council sold breads & pottery.

3 Vehicle Crash on E Third Street

Police have released the details of a three vehicle crash that occured last Thursday at 6:55 pm on East Third Street in the  Emporium Borough.
Lisa J. Toy, 50, of Emporium, PA, was transported by Emporium Ambulance to Elk Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.Trooper Paul Mall Jr., in a news release, said the accident occurred as Toy's 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling west on East Third Street in Emporium Borough. Toy lost control of her vehicle and impacted a 2008 Ford F-250 which was parked and unattended. After impact, Toy's Cavalier continued to travel west and impacted a 2002 Grand Am which was parked and unattended. Her vehicle came to rest at the point of impact with the Grand Am.
Troopers charged Toy with Careless Driving.

Katherine G. Griffith

Katherine G. Griffith, 91, of Grove House, 436 Old W. Creek Rd, Emporium and formerly of 201 W. Fifth Street died at The Grove House, on Sunday morning. (December 4, 2011)

She was born November 30, 1920 in Sterling Run a daughter of the late Grant and Fannie Terriberry Hart.

On March 4, 1939 in Williamsport she married the late Charles Griffith.

Mrs. Griffith retired from Sylvania in 1982 with over 25 years of employment. She was a member of the Emporium Senior Center, where she was a volunteer and also volunteered for the Food Pantry for many years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and going to Casino's.
