Mary E. Hardinger, , of 113 Hardinger Rd., Sinnemahoning, PA died at her residence on Sunday (August 28, 2011) morning. She was born October 20, 1942 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Cyril and Christine Donahue Brain. On August 8, 1964 in Overbrook, PA She married Francis "Sam" Hardinger, who Survives.

Mrs. Hardinger graduated from Business College in Pittsburgh. She had worked for Brown Oldsmobile in Pittsburgh, JC Penney, and retired from Cameron County High School where she had worked in the budsiness office. She was also the secretary of Grove Township for many years. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Driftwood. She enjoyed her animals.

Patricia Ann Lentz, 61, formerly of Austin, PA died Friday, August 26, 2011 at the home of her son, Gilbert Lentz, Jr. in Allegany, NY

Born on April 1, 1950 in Punxsutawney, PA she was the daughter of Jay and Dorothy Wright Anthony.

Patricia was a graduate of Austin Area School, Austin, PA. She had been employed as a quality supervisor at the Keystone Automatic Technology Manufacturing in Emporium, PA. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her mother, son, Gilbert Lentz, Jr. and his wife Tracy, of Allegany, NY, daughter, Marcia Jaques and her husband Bo of Austin, PA, brother, Darrel Anthony of Albuquerque, NM, sister, Cindy Rees and her husband Don of Austin, PA and three grandchildren, Courtney and Caleb Lentz, and Zachary Wilber, of Allegany, NY.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Emporium based state police are charging 38 year old Calvin Lane III of Driftwood with DUI after pulling him over on Weed Street near West 5^th Street in that town, late Tuesday night for an alleged traffic violation.

Zito Media To Launch BTN In Coudersport Area

Zito Media To Carry Penn State Football Season Opener and 100-Plus Nittany Lion Events This Year

COUDERSPORT, Pa. and CHICAGO; August 17, 2011 – Zito Media in Coudersport, Pa., and Big Ten Network (BTN) announced today that the network will be available to Zito customers beginning September 1 as part of the Expanded Basic package.

The announcement was made by James Rigas, Zito Media President, and Mark Silverman, Big Ten Network President.

After completing her medical education, including a fellowship in pediatric nephrology, in China,she has worked as a nephrology research scientist at the State University ofNew York at Stony Brook. She completed pediatric residencies at RichmondUniversity MedicalCenter in NY.
Throughouther career, she has written numerous articles and conducted numerous studiesfor which she’s earned awards. She is a member of the American Academyof Pediatrics.

Burn Ban Resolution 2011-6 has been adopted as of 10AM 7/27/11 for Cameron County.

This will take affect 48 hours after adoption (i.e. Wednesday, July 27th) and remain in effect for 30 days unless an extension is imposed prior to the 30 days.

 Burn Ban Definition:

Open burning is defined as the ignition and subsequent burning of any combustible material (garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, paper, vegetative matter involved with land clearing, or any sort of debris) out of doors either in a burn barrel or on the ground. The use of propane or gas stove or the use of tobacco in any form is not covered under this act. Camp fires are allowed in fires rings that confine and contain the campfire and only in designated Federal, State or DEP licensed campgrounds.

Penalties will be imposed through law enforcement officials.

Bucktail Rod & Gun Club

Unknown person(s) gained entry by force to a shed on the property of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club on Sizer Run in Portage Township between August 8th and 11th, where they removed a red 5 gallon plastic container filled with gasoline.

Buying Local Pumps up Cameron County Economy

Buying from locally owned stores is more important than ever.  Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center Executive Director Tina Johns Solak says, “if every person working in Cameron County would spend $50.00 a month at locally owned stores, more than $85,000 would be pumped into the local economy!”  That would mean in one year more than 1 million dollars would be spent in stores in the county.  After the store owner pays for the items bought….Cameron County would see more than $680,000.00 kept locally and paid to employees, donated to organizations and spent by the owner of the stores and employees at locally owned stores.

 The circle of the economy is so important for the smallest populated county in the state.  The chamber is adopting the 3/50 project.  It is an international project that promotes “saving the brick and mortars our nation is built on.”  This week www.the350project.net launched a smartphone application for the iPhone.  The free app is called LookLocal and includes the name, location and hours for locally owned businesses.  The android app is to be launched over the next few months. 

 Locally owned businesses are encouraged to register at www.the350project.net.  It is free and by registering it guarantees that the information about your business will appear in the smartphone app.

Investigations Continue

Between 7-5 and 8-8-2011, an unknown actor forcibly entered a camp owned by Nick Ginter of Yukon, PA, and located at 1548 Barr Hollow Road in Lumber Township, Cameron County. $950. worth of items were stolen from the camp. The damage to the camp was estimated at $50.00.

Between 7-13 and 8-6-2011, Unknown actor(s) attempted to enter a camp owned by Brian McCann of Greenville, PA, and located on Hunt's Run Road in Lumber Township, causing damage to the camp.

Actor(s) successfully entered a camp opwned by Robert Richards of New Castle, PA, and located On Hunt's Run Road, causing damage to the front door and removed items from the camp. The investigations are continuing.

$1500.00 damage was done to a PennDOT boom arm mower between 7-21 and 8-9-2011 while it was parked along Beechwood Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

Jane D. Metzler, 79,

Jane D. Metzler, 79, of Grove House, West Creek Rd, Emporium and formerly of Maple Street Apartments died at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys Tuesday (August 9, 2011) morning.

She was born August 23, 1931 in Erie a daughter of the late Paul B. and Mildred Kochendorfer Minton.

Mrs. Metzler attended Penn State University. She was the office Manager for Dr. Allen Blackburn for many years and later was a homemaker for over 22 years. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her friends.

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will offer heel screenings from 1 to 3 p.m., August 19 at the Women’s Health Center in hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center. The cost is $10. Call 274-8200 for an appointment.  Heel screenings give patients a preliminary bone density score (T score) in a matter of minutes. Low scores typically call for a more thorough exam. Those who should receive a heel screening include women over 65 or who have had an early menopause or hysterectomy or other hormonal depletion, men over 70, men and women taking certain medications or certain cancer treatments, those with risk factors or a disease or condition that can cause bone loss, and men and women who eat a low calcium diet or have had significant height loss

On June 11, 1984 in Coudersport she married the late Eugene Butler.
Mrs. Butler had worked at Guy and Mary Felt Manor over 5 years before moving to Montgomery County.

Fibromyalgia Support Group

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will host a fibromyalgia support group at 6 p.m. August 8 (the second Monday of each month) in the hospital conference room.Terri Cooney leads the group to provide support and education to patients, family, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about fibromyalgia. The group provides coping strategies and moral support as well as boost awareness about the illness. Since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2005, she has researched the illness extensively, including various treatment options.  Cooney is a retired high school English teacher with 16 years of experience. She is also a Reiki master and teacher and is experienced in a number of mind/body therapies such as meditation, biofeedback, yoga and hypnosis. First Friday Event Set For Emporium

Buying local will be encouraged Friday August 5 from 4-7 in Emporium. It is the first time the community will take part in First Friday. Numerous businesses will have sales, offer unique food items and extend business hours.


“The buying local theme is to drive home the point that for every $1.00 spent at a mom and pop owned store or restaurant, .68 remains in the community. Compare that to spending $1.00 at a national chain store or restaurant. Only .43 remains in your town,” explains Tina Johns Solak executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.

Pizza Palace Plus is the only downtown restaurant that offers outside seating and the deck will be open 4-7. South Park Supply will preview fall decorating items and offer 10% off any purchases. Reid’s Hometown Emporium is stocked with back to school supplies. Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union will show off its new location on West Fourth Street. Fox’s Pizza Den in Emporium will debut hog wings, which are pork ribs. Cameron’s Beauty Salon will have an open house. Northwest Savings Bank will honor customers with free cookies, Flower N Things will have cash ‘n carry bouquets available. Aroma Café & Restaurant will feature Walleye on the menu. Emporium Pharmacy is offering 15% off all gift items. Good Earth Partners will offer drought resistant native wildflower plants for sale. Cameron County Bloodmobile Schedule & Donor Need

The Red Cross has issued an appeal for blood donors of all types due to a critical blood shortage across our nation.

In May and June, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen in this timeframe in over a dozen years, while demand for blood products remained steady. Because of that, the Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient.

We highly encourage all type O negative blood donors who meet the eligibility requirements to double the difference by becoming a double red cell donor. If eligible, you can give to give two donations at once.

Amos L. Wheaton

Amos L. Wheaton, 80, of 1007 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium died at his residence, Emporium on Monday (August 1, 2011) morning. He was born January 18, 1931 in Dunbar, PA a son of the late Paul and Hazel VanGelder Wheaton.

He married Delia Ann Emery Wheaton, who Survives.

Mr. Wheaton retired from North American Philips where he worked for over 44 years. He was a life member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368, Emporium, and a member of the Christabelle Club.

Leo J. Main

Leo J. Main, 85, of 193 Meadow Rd., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Sunday, July 24, 2011 afternoon following a lengthy illness.

He was born October 27, 1925 in Port Allegany a son of the late Walter L. and Alice Cowan Main. He married Virginia Nellis Main, who Survives.

Mr. Main retired from Mallory Lumber where he worked for many years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dr. Phong Nguyen has joined the medical staff at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital

Dr. Phong Nguyen has joined the medical staff at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.


Specializing in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, Dr. Nguyen earned a medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an internship at Heart of Lancaster Hospital, a residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital where he was named chief resident, and a fellowship in interventional pain management at Michigan State University. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and American Society of Regional Anesthesia. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 814/274-5228.

Emporium Downtown Businesses Lining Up for First Friday

Friday August 5 Emporium will celebrate First Friday. It is a promotion to highlight businesses in the downtown and encourage folks to mingle and shop at stores. “Communities across the nation host First Friday events,” according to Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Tina Johns Solak. The event will take place from 4 to 7 pm.


Businesses participating include Good Earth Partners highlighting plants that are drought tolerant, Emporium Pharmacy with a 15% off promotion of all gift items, Reid’s Hometown Emporium offering back to school supplies, Mountain Laurel Credit Union will show off its new location on West Fourth Street, Fox’s Pizza Den in Emporium will debut hog wings, Aroma Café & Restaurant will offer walleye, Cameron’s Beauty Salon will have an open house, Northwest Savings Bank will honor customers with free cookies, Flowers N Things will have cash n’ carry bouquets available, Floor Masters will open its doors to musicians for a jam session and the chamber office will offer wine tasting.

Edmund N. Holt

Edmund N. Holt, 79, beloved husband and father, and son of Edmund Z. and Catherine  (Stascavage) Holt died quietly at home surrounded by family on July 16, 2011 from aggressive  cancer. Ed was born November 13, 1931 in Kingston, PA.

 He graduated from Emporium High School in  1950 then served in the US Army stationed in Japan.   Following the Korean War, he worked at Sylvania,  initially as a machinist and 38 years later retiring as a tool and die maker.  While  employed at Sylvania, Ed met his future wife Gladys. After marrying in 1956, they built their home overlooking West Creek, mostly with their own  labor.    Ed supplemented his Sylvania income with a variety of second jobs, including:   proprietor of Holt’s Gun Shop and Realtor with McBride and Sanderson.  Ed also found time  for a wide variety of interests, always learning something new.  He was a very competitive  target shooter and an avid hunter.  He enjoyed boats, motorcycles, ATVs, geocaching, being a  webmaster, computer social networks,sports cars and piloting his own plane at various times  in his life.  But of special value to Ed was the lifelong friendships formed during these  activities, In particular, the friendships formed at Keystone Park Airport.

  He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 yrs, Gladys (Hill) Holt.  He is also survived by  his six children:  Catherine Foltz Holt,  Edmund Holt II,  Toni Momose,  Alison Holt-Kalish,  Heather Larry, and Benjamin Holt, and their spouses Curt, Debbie, Craig, Scott, Dave and  Renee, respectively.  He is survived by 17 grandchildren and by 3 great-grandchildren.  He  is predeceased by his parents, an infant brother and one granddaughter.

 Visitation with surviving family will be at the United Methodist Church, Emporium, PA from  7:00 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, July 21 and from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Friday, July 22, followed  immediately by a memorial service, also at the United Methodist Church.

  In lieu of flowers,  please make donations in Ed's name to Community Nurses, Inc., Hospice Program, 757  Johnsonburg Rd, Suite 200, St. Mary's, PA  15857.

CCMH to use appointmen​t reminder system

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will initiate a new appointment reminder system for its office practices as a service to its patients. The automated system, which will be activated over the next couple of weeks, will call to confirm patient appointments. After a brief introduction from Charles Cole, the message will update patients with the date, time and location of scheduled appointments. Patients will have the option to conveniently confirm or cancel their appointments via their phone’s key pad. Patients are encouraged to listen to the entire message as the system is designed to remind patients of all appointments including coordinated multiple appointments on one day. “This new process is being implemented as a service to our patients. We hope that by offering a friendly reminder of scheduled appointments two days in advance, patients will be more likely to receive the healthcare they need. We hope our patients find this service beneficial in helping to manage busy schedules,” said Janice Walters, executive director, revenue systems and primary care services.   

SKYWARN Class Training to be held

The Emporium Fire Department will be hosting a SKYWARN CLASS on WEDNESDAY, JULY 20th at 6:30 PM at their location.

ATV's On Highway

Numerous complaints of ATV's being operated on the highway in various locations throughout Cameron County have been made to Pennsylvania State Police in Emporium.

State Police remind you: ATV's are not permitted to be operated on the highway and if encountered, enforcement action will be taken.

CCMH, Hospice to host Lifetimes Retreat

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Potter County Hospice will host a retreat for children 6-14 who are grieving due to death, divorce or other loss.The third annual Lifetimes Retreat provides activities for children to express their feelings and work through the grieving process. Knowing that children grieve differently than adults, the retreat allows children to talk with other children who had similar experiences and to realize their feelings are normal. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 10 at the Patterson Cancer Care Center. There is no charge for the event and lunch is included.
