Shoot the Moon/Cinch Tournament

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce will host a Shoot the Moon/Cinch Tournament on Saturday September 28.  The tournament will be held at the Emporium Moose Club starting at 2pm. 

 The tournament is patterned after the popular monthly tournaments held at Sacred Heart Parish Center in St Marys using Shoot the Moon Rules.  Each game consists of 8 hands, and 9 games will be played.  At the end of the tournament individual players with the most earned points will receive prize money. 

 Food and beverages will be available to benefit the Emporium Moose Club.  The tournament will be played in a non-smoking environment.  It is open to both Moose and non-members.  The general public is also invited to watch the tournament.   

 The fee is $10.00 per player.  Advance registration is required.  The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce will accept registrations in person or by phone 814-486-4314.  The deadline to register is Friday September 27 at noon.

August Artist of the Month

 

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center shines the spotlight on Jack Northop as the August Artist of the Month.  Northrop turns trees into bowls and vases of all shapes and sizes.

 “I take scrap wood and give it new life,” Northrop boasts.  His bowls feature the imperfections that nature gave the piece of useful art.  Many customers have purchased the bowls for wedding gifts in celebration of a couples new life together.

Northrop got bit by the woodturning bug 30 years ago, when he was making a bedroom suite.  The bedposts were turned by Northrop and when he retired he moved to the area of the Allegheny National Forest and spends his days giving new life to scraps!  His choice wood includes black cherry, walnut, maple, sumac and butternut locust. 

 The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center carries numerous one of a kind bowls and vases created by Northrop.  Stop in the chamber Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 9am-1pm or Tuesday nights 6:30-9:30.

Maryanne Ellen Malizia

 

 

 COLUMBIA - Memorial Mass for Maryanne Ellen Malizia, 72, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church. The family will receive friends in the church Family Life Center following the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Emporium, Pa., St. Mark Catholic Church Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.

 

 Ms. Malizia died Sunday, September 1, 2013. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Eric William and Rosemary Hickey Petrazio. Formerly of Emporium, Pa., she graduated in 1958 from Cameron County High School and D'Youville College. In addition, she was a former member of St. Marks Catholic Church in Emporium. She retired in Columbia.

 

Surviving are her sons, Daniel Malizia of Boynton Beach, Fla., John Malizia of Dubois, Pa., Tony Malizia of Columbia; four grandchildren; sister, Donna Stuart (Donald) of Irmo, S.C.; two brothers, Eric Petrazio Jr. (Vicki) and Mark Petrazio (Teresa), both of Roanoke, Va. Indoor Yard Sale This Week

A huge INDOOR yard sale continues at the Cameron County Christian center located in Emporium; formerly the East 4th Street School. The yard sale will be on all this week and next with new items added daily. The proceeds of this yard sale will be divided between the Fish & Loaves Food pantry and the gymnasium renovation project.

 Also, Country Blessings an outreach ministry providing low cost clothing and household items, begins extended hours today. Country Blessings new hours are Tuesday 9-5; Wednesday through Friday, 9 AM to 8 PM. Coffee is on and free be sure to stop in!

Port Allegany – Friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Dennis Michael Pesock, 52, of Port Allegany, on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1-4 p.m. at the Port Allegany Veterans Memorial Home on Rt. 155 South, Port Allegany.

Vehicle Fire

On Sunday night, September 1, the Cameron County Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on the Old West Creek Road, about 2 miles West of Emporium. Initially a nearby garage was threatened by flames, but the fire was quickly extinguished, and the  trucks returned with no further alarms.

Helen M. Nesbitt, 91, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys formerly of Byrnedale, PA died at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys on Wednesday (September 4, 2013) morning.

 She was born May 16, 1922 in DuBois a daughter of the late Martin and Sophia Gillis.
She married the late James Nesbitt, Jr.

 Mrs. Nesbitt was a member of the Bennetls Valley Senior Center where she worked for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Force.

June A. Talmadge, 48, of 316 E. 3rd St., Emporium, formerly of Port Allegany and Long Island, NY died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Tuesday (September 3, 2013) morning.

She was born May 25, 1965 in Brooklyn, New York a daughter of the late JoAnn Iannucci Connolly.

She married Kevin Talmadge, of Emporium who survives.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Whitetail Deer Presentation

Plan to attend a family friendly Whitetail Deer presentation by Charlie’s Alsheimer. Alsheimer is an award winning outdoor writer, nature photographer, lecturer and whitetail deer consultant from Bath, NY. He is senior contributing editor for Deer and Deer Hunting magazine and co-host of their television show Deer and Deer Hunting TV, which airs on NBC Sports network. For over 30 years, Alsheimers work has taken him across North America. His photography has won numerous state and national contests. His articles and photographs have appeared in nearly every major outdoor publication, including Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Sports Afield, Harris Publications and Deer and Deer Hunting. In addition he has written seven popular books on the whitetail and co-authored a eighth. If you enjoy hunting or just learning more about whitetail deer you won’t want to miss this program.

This event will take place on September 21^st 2013 at the Cameron County High School Auditorium. The main presentation will be held at 7:00PM. Doors will open at 5:30PM. There will be exhibit booths for Charlie Alsheimer, Cameron County Long Beards Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation, North Central Whitetail Chapter of Quality Deer Mgmt., Cameron County High School Outdoor Club and Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities. Tickets for admission will be $5.00 adult and $3.00 for students.

Refreshments will be available in the High School cafeteria. This is sure to be an enjoyable and educational evening for all ages. This is a great opportunity for anyone to be better prepared for the upcoming hunting season. Please also remember to bring a young person. It is important to start educating the next generation to assure they keep our areas rich hunting and conservation heritage alive. Judith Ann "Judy" Shunk,

COUDERSPORT - Judith Ann "Judy" Shunk, 71, of Hebron, passed away Thursday in Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
She was born in Kane on Feb. 19, 1942, a daughter of Harry Leo and Lois L. Monjar Bright. She was married to Robert W. Shunk, who passed away Dec. 4, 2008.

She was a Cameron County High School graduate and attended college in DuBois. She was known as the Avon Lady and was an accomplished musician. She was a member and taught Sunday school at Hebron Union Church. She was a member of A.M.O.M.A. (a musical organization). She enjoyed and taught dancing and clogging and was associated with the Potter Players. She loved motorcycle riding.

Her survivors include two sons, Marshall J. and Russell W. Shunk of Smethport; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Bonnie Baney of Emporium and LaRae Smith of Driftwood.
She was predeceased by a brother, Donny.

Judy's Life Celebration will be held Wednesday at the Thomas Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 N. East St., Coudersport, with Pastor Howard Burnham officiating.  Friends will be received from 9 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Burial will be in McKean County Memorial Park, Lafayette. 

Her family suggests contributions be made to the Hebron Union Church, 1149 Route 44 North, Coudersport, PA 16915.

Afternoon Alarm

The Emporium Fire Department, Emporium Ambulance and responders from Elk Company 1 FD responded to a resident alarm on East 5th street in Emporium late this afternoon. Agencies were able to leave within the hour after determining the fire was out and all people accounted for.

Buy Fresh Comes to Cameron County

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that a local farmer has taken up the challenge to set up a stand in Emporium and sell fresh produce!  Uhl 4-Star Farm from Kersey will sell peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and sweet corn all raised on their farm in Kersey. 

 “For years folks living in Cameron County have asked why we don’t have a centralized location where farmers could set up a stand, starting this Saturday, August 24 we do,” explained executive director Tina Johns Solak.  The location next to the chamber will be convenient for those wishing to walk.  Parking on the street is also available.  The price is just .05 per half hour. 

 Uhl 4-Star Farm is family owned and operated.  They participate in various farmers markets in communities in Elk County.  This is their first visit to Cameron County.

Richard L. McAulay

Richard L. McAulay, 77, of 460 E. Second St., Emporium, PA died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Tuesday (August 20, 2013) morning.  He was born October 6, 1935 in Emporium, PA a son of the late John Junior and Mary Felton McAulay.
In Emporium he married Mary Lou Huntington McAulay, who survives

Mr. McAulay graduated from Emporium High School. He served with the US Navy during the Korean War. He worked at Cameron Manufacturing and later at Cameron County Memorial Hall. He was involved with Cameron County Little League for many years. He enjoyed outdoors, hunting, fishing, the Pirates and the Steelers.

St Mark/St James Parish Picnic

Sunday, August 25th the St Mark/St James Parish Picnic will be held at Bucktail Rod & Gun Club.  Mass will begin at 11:00 AM.  Please join us in this festive celebration during our 125^th anniversary year.  Bring yourself, family, friends, and your favorite dish to share!  Hot dogs, hamburgers, tableware, drinks and fun games for the kids will be provided.  A special 125^th Anniversary display of photos and mementos will be on hand to view. Please use the sign-up sheet in the back of the church to let us know how many people will attend and what dish you will provide.

  If you haven’t been to our picnic in awhile, please consider attending.   Hope to see you there!

Jesse L. Banks

 

Jesse L. Banks, 34, of Rose St., Johnsonburg, PA, passed away in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA.

Born December 16, 1978, in Ridgway, PA, he was a son of John and Marsha Bennett Banks. On Dec. 19, 2011, he married Lisa M. Bidwell, who survives.

Mr. Banks was a longtime resident of the area and a graduate of Emporium High School, Class of 1997.

Suviving in addition to his wife, Lisa, are his mother and father, John and Marsha Banks of Emporium; four sons, Payton L. Banks, Dahsun H.T. Bidwell, Jordan T.S. Jones, Baylee C.J. Jones all of Johnsonburg; four daughters, Sierra L. Banks, Mariah M. Stiles, Abigal L. Banks, Destinee M. Stiles all of Johnsonburg; two brothers, John (Sue) Banks, Jr. and Ricky (Martha) Banks both of Emporium; a sister, Angel Banks of Johnsonburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 21, 2013) with Rev. Tammy Claydon, pastor of the Gardeau Community Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Portage Township Cemetery, Gardeau, PA.

Dennis Michael Pesock

Port Allegany - Dennis Michael Pesock, 52, of Sartwell Creek, Port Allegany, died unexpectedly, Friday (August 16, 2013).

He was born March 1, 1961 in Coudersport, a son of Michael James Pesock and Rose Ann Green-Freeman.

Mr. Pesock was a graduate of Port Allegany High School and had done factory work in Emporium for several years and then worked at Twin Tier Linen Service in Coudersport before he became disabled.

He enjoyed being outdoors, riding his 4 wheeler, fresh leeks and blackberries, and spending time with his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by:

Step Mother: Carolyn Pesock of Coudersport, PA
Step Father: Larry Freeman of Port Allegany, PA
three sisters: Robin Engel-Taylor of Mt. Jewett, PA, Sheri (Scott) Boucher of Coudersport, PA, Jodi (Paul Mitchell) Pesock of Port Allegany, PA
two brothers: Randy E. (Debra) Pesock of Roulette, PA, Bruce K. (Sybil) Taylor of Port Allegany, PA
and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Mother, Rose Ann Green-Freeman on Jan. 19, 1987, and his Father, Michael James Pesock on Aug. 9, 2013.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at a later date and time to be announced.

Come and learn about the Strong Women program!

 

Elk Regional Health Center, working with the Penn State Cooperative Extension and DuBois Regional Medical Center, to bring the Strong Women Program to St. Marys and Emporium again this fall!

We will be holding a  free orientation meeting on  August 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the Cameron County Recreation Center, 300 Chestnut Street in Emporium

 

In Emporium, classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. at the Cameron County Recreation Center. Classes in Emporium begin on Sept. 3.  Classes will be held twice per week for 12 weeks. Gette Bardo will be the Strong Women site leader.

 

Up-to-date nutrition and health information will be included in each session. Cost for participants is $80 ... but if you're registered by August 23, the cost is just $60! Online registration is available by clicking here.

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall, 79, of Oknefski Road, Ridgway, died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 26, 1934, in Castle Garden, the son of the late Arthur H. and Louise Wolfe Pearsall Sr.
Formerly of Emporium, he was a self-employed TV repairman.

 He is survived by his companion of 21 years, Ardis Lunder of Ridgway; four sisters, Helen Pearsall of Coudersport, Pauline Hayes of Louisiana, Naomi Dill of Sterling Run, and Judith Pearsall of St. Marys; three brothers, Herbert Pearsall of Massachusetts, Robert Pearsall of Sellersville, and David Pearsall of North Carolina; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

 Besides his parents and his wife, Wilma Wilson Pearsall, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Reed, Mildred Irwin, and Esther Gerg; and three brothers, Edward, Richard, and Arthur Jr. Pearsall.

 Funeral services for Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall will be held at the convenience of the family.

Downtown Flowers

Sure is nice to see Ted Walters tending to the flowers between St Marks and  the First Presbyterian Church. I miss the flower pots he had tended to in past years.

 

 

Classes at Cameron County Artisan Center Rewarding

 

 

 

Cameron County Fair entries in the arts and crafts category included many items created at classes offered at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center.  Baskets, silk scarves and mesh ribbon wreaths garnered prize ribbons at the recent fair.  “This is so exciting!” gushed executive director Tina Johns Solak.  “To see that people took classes and then felt comfortable to enter the fair and help increase the fair entries is a goal accomplished.”  Other entries came from those that knit and crochet on Tuesday nights at the chamber.  Several of those pieces also were awarded ribbons.

An opportunity to learn a new artform is coming up Thursday or Friday at the chamber office.  Artist Mary Wise will teach Zentangle which is a form of doodling where shapes are filled in with designs.  Students of any age will make a note card for the price of $5.00.  The class is offered Thursday night 6-8:30pm or Friday morning 10am-noon.  To register call the chamber office at 814-486-4314.
