Weekend Events @ Sinnemahoning State Park

 

Greetings Sinnemahoning Friends!

Fall is the most glorious time of the year here in the First Fork Valley. The elk are bugling, the birds and butterflies are traveling, evenings are cool, and the leaves are just getting their first hints of color. Please take time out of your busy schedules to visit our beautiful park this month. Friday, September 10 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Monarch Butterfly Tagging. Monarch butterfly migration presentation followed by a short walk to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. Arial nets provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk through fields. All ages welcome. Please note: Presentation will be held rain or shine, but tagging will not take place in wet or rainy weather. Meet in Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, September 11 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Elk in Pennsylvania. Take a look into the fascinating life of one of our largest, most intriguing wild animals. Learn the history of elk in Pennsylvania and ways to improve your chances of seeing elk this fall. Indoor PowerPoint presentation enhanced with elk hikes, antlers, and more. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, September 11 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Fire Building. The keys to successful fire building are understanding the different types of fuel needed and how to use structure to take advantage of the growing flames. Learn and practice several different techniques to construct a safe campfire. Beginners are welcome! Must be at least 11 years old. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. 40 Maples Day Use Area.

Sunday, September 12 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM
Pontoon Boat Tours. Join park staff for a relaxing and informative 1-hour tour of the lake as we search the shoreline for herons, ducks, turtles, and other wildlife. Program is free but donations are requested. All ages welcome. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. Lake Day Use Area.

Sunday, September 12 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Bike the Rail Trail. Enjoy a guided ride on the Lowlands Trail to learn about fall wildlife watching opportunities in Sinnemahoning State Park and the surrounding areas. Ride will be about 5 miles on a flat crushed gravel surface. Helmets are required. Ages 10 and up. Bring your bike or borrow one from the park. Limited number of loaner bikes. Pre-registration is requested. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
