Looking at the United States at 250!

Step Into 1876: Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library Presents an Unforgettable Journey with President Ulysses S. Grant

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library invites the community to experience history brought vividly to life in a powerful and engaging presentation: “Looking at the United States at 250!”—taking place Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 PM.

Step back to the summer of 1876, when the United States marked its first century at the groundbreaking Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, opened by President Ulysses S. Grant. This immersive program transports audiences into that defining moment in American history through the voice and perspective of President Grant himself.

As “President Grant” reflects on a young nation on the rise, attendees will explore the spirit of innovation, perseverance, and expansion that helped shape the United States into a country of promise and possibility. His story bridges past and present, inviting reflection on how far the nation has come as we approach its 250th anniversary.

This dynamic, living-history presentation offers a rare opportunity to engage with history in a personal and compelling way—where stories from the past feel strikingly relevant to the present. The program is free and open to the public, with no registration required. While designed for adults, all ages are welcome to attend.

Gunnery Sgt. Kenneth J. Serfass is from Bethlehem, PA, born in June 1966, and a career US Marine from 1984 to 2004, serving his final tour with the First Marine Division Band during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon retirement, Ken became a music teacher in San Diego.

Serafass is a former “reenactor” and now a first-person impressionist with 52 years studying his hero, US Grant. As a full-time professional living history storyteller, he presents from 11 to 20 programs monthly each February through December. His first appearance as General Grant was in 2009, in Southern California, and since 2014, now back east, he presents at schools, living history, reenacting and roundtable events, public libraries, and annually back in Southern California at Huntington Beach’s Civil War Days over Labor Day weekend.

The program will be held in the library’s multipurpose room located at 27 West 4 th Street in Emporium. For more information, please contact the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library at 814-486-8011.

Experience history not as a distant memory—but as a living story that continues to shape who we are today.

Amy Case Author and Christian Fiction Novelist

In {1962}, Amy Nellis was born just outside a small country town, nestled deep within the confines of the Appalachian Mountain Range in Pennsylvania. Growing up in a large farming family, there was always something fun and exciting going on which seemingly inspired her to write her stories. With a love for reading and a passion for writing all of her life, she had a few articles published in the local newspaper. Amy declined various times, when approached as a young adult, to have her articles published. For many years, Amy continued to secretly write and eventually gave it up all together. It wasn’t until many years later, in {2016}, with the gentle nudging from her husband, that she finally permitted her work to become published. Amy gains inspiration for her stories through her and her husband’s travels. Amy Case, now resides in Middle Tennessee, with her husband, Jackie.
