This past Friday, students from 4th-6th grades at Woodland Elementary School spent the day at Sizerville State Park learning about environmental education during the Wild About Nature Field Day hosted by the Cameron County Conservation District.
Students spent the day learning about:

September is National Literacy Month📖
Education and Literacy are combined as one of Rotary's 7 main areas of focus.
This month we are continuing our literacy efforts in ways we have done for years, and also some new ways!
We were able to provide Andy & Elmer coloring books to 2nd graders at Woodland and Austin Elementary schools, dictionaries to 3rd graders at Woodland and Austin Elementary schools, purchase books for the Reading Under the Lights program in Cameron County, and new this year: we contributed to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program in Cameron County!
With DPIL, children age 0-5 can receive free monthly books (this will resume in November in Cameron County).
These programs also give us a chance to teach children about the importance of community service.
This is all made possible by the generosity of our community. Each time you attend our picnic, purchase our chili at Christmas in the Wilds, buy a chance for an item we are raffling, make a donation to our club, and more, you are ensuring that programs like these can continue in our communities.

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce All Fired Up Kickin Ash BBQ ready to kick off this weekend in downtown Emporium.
Competitors from the region will be looking to take home bragging rights and the $500 cash prize sponsored by Emporium Food
Market for mystery meat! Each competitor will set up Friday night and begin seasoning, and stoking fires till serving time on
Saturday at noon.
The competition is part of the PA Wilds BBQ Circuit which includes events in neighboring counties. Cameron County is the final
competition of the circuit. Allegheny Mountain Chapter of Nam Knights will be serving beverages Friday night and all day Saturday.
Old Skool will perform Saturday. The event fills the Town Square and provides seating for those purchasing food from the
competitors. Chamber executive director Tina Solak notes, “This competition is unique that the public can purchase food from the
competitors and then vote for their favorite. Most competitions have only the judges tasting.”
Competitors this year include 242 BBQ from Roulette, Smoke ‘em if you Got ‘em from Emporium, Jason’s Smokin from Brockway,
Everything Wood Fired from Reynoldsville, Mort’s Meat Mafia from Gallitzin, Bobby Que’s from Emporium and Smitty’s Eat-n-
Shack from Emporium.
Unique t-shirts designed by Art N Ink will be available for purchase during the event. Dempsey Homestead Sweets will have desserts
available, and Knights of Columbus will have football tickets for sale. The event in its 8 th year provides an economic opportunity for
competitors, Emporium businesses and exposure to local organizations.

If you’ve been out on the West Creek Rail Trail lately, you might’ve noticed some big changes 👀
One of the old coal refuse piles has been leveled, treated with lime, topped with soil, and is getting ready for new vegetation!
This will help stop leftover mining material from adding acidity to the water. 🌱✅
PLUS — One of the system’s key features has just been constructed: an Anoxic Limestone Drain (ALD)!
It may not look like much on the surface, but underground, it’s doing serious work 💪

The PA Woodland Resilience Enhancement Network
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Pennsylvania forest landowners can now apply for reimbursements of up to $25,000 through a new $5 million program designed to strengthen private woodlands against pests, disease, and the impacts of climate change.
The PA Woodland Resilience Enhancement Network (PWREN) is open to landowners with between 10 and 2,500 acres of forest anywhere in Pennsylvania. Support may include:
• Forest management activities that improve forest health
• Customized woodland plans tailored to each property
• One-on-one support from DCNR service foresters, free of charge
• Connections to technical and financial resources beyond PWREN
• Local learning networks to share knowledge and best practices

One of the many things that the Sinnemahoning Watershed Association does is conduct sampling of different locations within the watershed.
These salt and nitrate tests were performed on Sunday at Sinnemahoning State Park.
Both showed that the water is looking great. We also observed a gilled snail, which is one of many indicator species that will not be found in polluted water.

Crisis averted thanks to our first responders!
#ICYMI this past Saturday a brush fire occurred on State Game Lands 311 near the Dents Run Viewing Area outside of Benezette. From images, videos, and emergency reports, the fire appeared daunting and had potential to threaten a large area, very quickly.
BUT thanks to fast acting first responders from Elk, Cameron, and Clearfield counties, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and the Game Commission, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.
On Sunday, upon evaluation, there was less than one acre that was affected by the fire! Most of the burn area was contained to game lands.
We want to take this opportunity to remind residents and visitors that Pennsylvania is extremely dry, with most counties experiencing drought conditions. Please be mindful of campfires, burning of debris or brush, and even something as simple as parking a vehicle in tall grass. It only takes a spark.
Thank you again to ALL first responders for their quick and steadfast action during this incident!

Seneca Highlands CTC's "Student of the Week"
Lillian Major is the Student of the Week for the week of September 22nd, 2025. She is participating in the morning session of the Early Childhood Education program at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center. Lilli is a senior enrolled at Cameron County High School. Upon graduation, Lilli plans on studying abroad.
Lilli is currently working to gain her CDA, a national credentialing program sponsored by the Council for Professional Recognition. She plans on taking the CDA (Child Development Associate) at the end of this academic year. She is volunteering in a clinical setting in the St. Mark’s Community Day Care Pre-K classroom to gain her required hours for her CDA. Lilli enjoys working with the children, watching them grow academically, as well as watching them grow friendships with one another. She has been involved with the student committee at the Career and Technical Center. She took PSY 111 last year as part of a dual enrollment program with Penn College of Technology to earn three college credits. She was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society in the 2024-2025 school year. Lilli in her spare time is learning American Sign Language.
We look forward to her efforts paying off as she strives to attain her Child Development Associate credential. Lilli was chosen because her instructor, Mrs. Kim Mooney, finds her to be creative and listens well. Lilli is kind and has much to offer by selecting activities that are meaningful and fun for children!

Gloria Jean Hayes
Gloria Jean Hayes, 67, of Emporium, PA passed away at UPMC Passavant, Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday (September 20, 2025) evening following complications from surgery.
She was born September 10, 1958 in Rockville Centre, New York a daughter of the late Gerard Matzen. She married Arnold Hayes, who survives.
She retired from Racoh Products where she had worked for many years. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She loved spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband, Arnold Hayes she is survived by son, Bobby Ng (Danika); son, Nicholas Long (Stephanie); daughter, Constance Athans (Jerry); daughter, Jessica Hayes; son, Benjamin Hayes (Maria); eight grandchildren: Henry, Charlotte, Amelia, Finley, Braxton, Annabelle, Shane and Chris; a Brother, Gerard Matzen; and a sister, Jeanette Coleman.
Visitation with Video Tribute will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E 4th St., Emporium, PA on Thursday (September 25, 2025) from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. At her request there will be no service
Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

George Stockburger IV
My dad and his family were lifelong camp owners and hunters in Sinnemahoning and Driftwood.
He loved Elk and Cameron County, the Elk Alliance, and the wildlife in central PA.
He was also a member of the Sinnemahoning Sportsman Club.
Sharing in case anyone here knew him.

George Stockburger IV of New Hope, formerly of Richboro and Newtown, died peacefully at his home on Thursday September 18, 2025, with his beloved wife Nancy by his side. He was 83.
Born in Abington, Pennsylvania, George was the cherished husband of Nancy J. Forrest Stockburger for 60 years and the son of the late George 3rd and Mary Eleanor Finney Stockburger.
George grew up in Southampton and graduated from William Tennent High School, class of 1959. He received his undergraduate degree in Business from Ryder University in 1964, going on to serve in the Army National Guard.
In 1957, while in High School, George started working with his father at the family automobile dealership on State Street in Newtown. He continued the family legacy of Stockburger Chevrolet and Stockburger Chrysler for over 50 years, until the dealerships closed in May of 2009.
During his time leading the dealerships, George earned several prestigious awards. From General Motors Corp., he was honored with the 25-Year and 50-Year Awards for his outstanding performance in sales and customer service. Both George and the dealership were recognized with the Legacy Leader Proclamation and Pin. Additionally, George received special recognition at an Awards Dinner in Washington, DC, where he had the honor of meeting former President George Bush.
A strong and respected presence in the Newtown community, George was a member of the Newtown Rotary for over 38 years, including a term as president, and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He served on the Board of the Newtown Reliance Company for Detecting and Apprehending Horse Thieves and Other Villains. Additionally, he was a member of Masonic Lodge #427 F & AM of Newtown, recently receiving his 60 year membership pin. George was a proud lifetime member of the Keystone Elk Country Alliance, a life member of the NRA, and a distinguished rifleman of the Conestoga Rod and Gun Club of which his family were founding members. George and Nancy were dedicated band parents for their five children over twelve consecutive years with the Council Rock Indian Marching Band. They selflessly gave their time, love and dedication to the music program.
George and Nancy enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their motorhome, visiting all the contiguous states. As a couple, they enjoyed trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, Canada and Mexico. An avid outdoorsman, George excelled at trap shooting, hunting and fishing, and especially loved sharing the outdoors with his grandchildren at their mountain home in Driftwood, PA. George enjoyed many hunting trips throughout the United States, including Wyoming, Colorado and Alaska, as well as the Yukon Territory. He will be fondly remembered for his contagious smile, quick wit, firm handshake and unimpeachable integrity. He was proud to be an American and loved the United States.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, George is survived by his five children: George V and his wife Kim, Amy Goldberg and her husband Mark, Jennifer Frawley and her husband Sean, Rebecca Rice and her husband Thomas, and Heather Blady and her husband Andrew. He was the proud grandfather of thirteen: George VI, Matthew, Sean Patrick (Catherine), Sarah (Derek), Tim, Declan, Dan, Adam, Thomas, Andy, Christopher, Ronan, and Jake. He is also survived by his three sisters Mary Forrest (the late Charles and Frank), Laura Scheithauer (Bob), and Susan Fridy (Nate).
Relatives and friends are invited to greet George’s family on Tuesday September 23, 2025 from 9:30 am until his Masonic Service at 10:45 am followed by his Funeral Service 11:00am at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro.
A private interment will follow.
