Emporium Rotary Club
This week at Emporium Rotary, we were privileged to have two guest speakers.
Our first speaker, introduced by Rotarian Sheri Larson, was Mikele Bay, executive director of the Children's Advocacy Center of McKean County (which includes Cameron, Potter and Elk Counties.) Mikele spoke on the reality of child abuse which includes sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, witness to violence, drug endangerment, and commercial sexual exploitation of children. She also noted that getting help is hard because most services available are designed for adults, not children. 99% of physical and sexual child abuse crimes are committed by individuals the child knows. If you suspect child abuse, call the ChildLine 1-800-932-0313, reach out by calling 814-887-3493 or emailing mtbay@mckeancountypa.gov.
Our second speaker was President Elect Rotarian John Kautz.
John is president of our local historical museum and has a plentiful amount of Cameron County knowledge. John gave a briefing on the Petrified Rock formations here and close by. He also passed out flyers that had the history of the "Goats Head" in Sterling Run, Cameron County, PA. Although the "Goats Head" icon has no professional interest because it was above ground and therefore not an archeological find - could have been done by anyone. The carving was intended to be a goddess manifesting herself as an owl with horns and wings, meaning time of change or time of dying.
If you're interested in learning more of Cameron County, The Cameron County Historical Society & The Little Museum, with limited hours, has everything you want. Their website is: CameronCoHistorial.wixsite.com/CameronCoHistorySoc and the email is: HistoryCenter1@windstream.net.
