One way to help monitor a waterway's health is to see what types of macroinvertebrates are inhabiting it. Under the leaves and rocks, the macroinvertebrates grow to become food for our native fish. Certain macroinvertebrates will only inhabit pollution-free water. Suppose you are interested in learning more about macroinvertebrates. In that case, Stroud Water Research Center has a free guide to help identify macroinvertebrates, and the Izaak Walton League of America offers a free app called Creek Critters.
Also, multiple times a year, our local Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources state parks offer stream studies with the park educator. Links for both are below.
