John M. (Jack) McDonough

John M. (Jack) McDonough (76) passed away unexpectedly on October 11th in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Jack was born in Emporium, Pa. While in high school, Jack's family moved to the Washington, D.C. area.

 After graduating from Bladensburg High School In Maryland, Jack served in the US Army in Vietnam, where he was awarded two bronze stars and other Army service commendations. Along with his partner, Karen Merritt, Jack owned and operated Masonry Paving in the Virginia Beach area for over 30 years. His unique creations of colorful masonry paving art work of seals( Lighthouses etc) are well known, especially at the Virginia Beach ocean front. 

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mabel McDonough, brother, Jeff, sisters, Darla Butler and Julie Rotter, longtime companion, Karen Merritt, grandson, Jase Suther, niece, Stacie Guerin, and nephews, Kyle McDonough and Josh Webb. 

He is survived by his son, Jason Bell, stepsons, Thomas and Justin Merritt and daughter, Tara Bell Lopez, brothers, Tom and Patrick McDonough, and sisters, Mitzi Revels and Anne Stover, and ex-wives, Maureen Bell and Deborah McDonough.

 In addition, Jack is survived by 10 grandchildren and over 45 nieces and nephews who loved hearing his family history stories. 

 Jack was an avid outdoorsman who was in his element when hunting and 4 wheeling at his hunt club(s) and fishing with his buddies. At home, he enjoyed reading, cooking, canning, yard sales, the Redskins, NASCAR, and most recently, the WNBA.

 Above all, Jack loved and cherished his large and ever-expanding family and many friends, especially those friends at Comfy Belly. Jack will forever be missed and always remembered by those who knew him. 
A Celebration of Life is planned in 2026.
