CC Farmers Market Introduces Nelson Haas

Cameron County Farmers Market
Please welcome Nelson Haas, our newest vendor bringing his handmade walking sticks to the market—each one a work of art and craftsmanship!

Nelson doesn’t just make walking sticks—he brings them to life! Each one is handmade, totally unique, and full of character.

Growing up on a dairy farm, Nelson and his family used walking sticks daily to bring the cows in for milking. They were an intricate part of life on the farm and that early connection to the land and tools sparked a lifelong love of woodworking.

Nelson is well-known in the county for his stunning wildlife pen & ink drawings published weekly in the Echo. His column, Mountain Lines, featured 1,000 illustrations, he never missed a week in nearly 20 years! Now, he’s channeling that same love for nature into his walking sticks. Nelson harvests all his own wood—redwood, oak, black birch, white spruce, occasionally Japanese yew, beech and maple—and transforms it into something beautiful. The bark is peeled off, some are smoked for extra character, cracks are filled with epoxy, and then the real magic begins.

Each stick is hand-carved and sanded to a silky smooth finish. They’re decorated with gorgeous wood-burned art and detailed inlaid designs, no two sticks are alike so each is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art! They are then sealed with multiple coats of protective polyurethane and topped off with a leather lanyard, a deer antler slider, and a rope-wrapped handle for a warm, non-slip grip. They’re all perfectly balanced and can be shortened to fit your height just right!

Each stick also comes with its own story attached, written by Nelson, so you know exactly what went into its creation! Nelson has taught carving workshops in the past and will hopefully do so again in the future. In the meantime, don’t miss his live demonstration at the market where you can see how he brings these beautiful pieces to life.

Come visit Nelson and see his incredible craftsmanship in action! Stop by and discover why these aren’t just walking sticks—they’re walking statements! You’ll definitely want to take one home!

You will find Nelson and all our incredibly talented vendors at the first market of the season on Saturday, May 10, 9am to 12pm at the Emporium Town Square. See you there!
