Elkland Search and Rescue
This is a public service announcement after witnessing some concerning behaviors today in the Quehanna Wilds Area from our members.
If you are planning on being outdoors traveling, especially back or country roads, PLEASE be prepared!
Do you have a blanket in your vehicle? A few "Hot Hands" for each passenger in a vehicle will also help keep people warm if the vehicle breaks down or becomes stuck. Proper footwear(that is boots), gloves, winter hat and a coat are a must for everyone in the vehicle!
What is the condition of your tires? Is your vehicle four wheel drive? Do you have tire chains? Do you have a tow strap or tow chain? Is your gas tank full? If you get stuck and have to idle your vehicle, you will need fuel to keep warm. If you do become stranded and have to idle your vehicle, make sure your exhaust pipe isn't plugged with water, mud or snow.
Backcountry roads in the Elk and surrounding counties are ice and snow covered. It is difficult to see where the sides of the unplowed roads are and what is the berm of the road. As two vehicles approach in opposing directions, slow down and after passing each other, PLEASE make sure the other vehicle is safely traveling down the road and didn't slide in the ditch. If they become disabled, STOP and help them! Next time it may be you in their position or you may be their only help for a very long time traveling that road.
If out ice fishing, please have the necessary safety equipment to self rescue. The ice is in varying thickness levels right now across the area and there are many unsafe ice levels at this time.
We at Elkland Search and Rescue, want you to get out there and enjoy the fresh air, just be prepared to be outdoors and be prepared for the activities you are participating in!
