Cameron County Clay Crushers 1st Meet

Cameron County Clay Crushers
We had our first official meet yesterday! Here is just a little recap of how it went.
The sun was shining, although a little brisk and muddy. Each and every one of these kiddos today showed determination, sportsmanship, respect, and enthusiasm for the sport.
They all walked to that line and did what they could, and most of all, they had FUN!!!
We could never ask for more! We are so proud of each and every one of you, individually and as a team unit! We did not "win" today in the standard form of how many birds shattered, BUT we as coaches sure won overall when we got such an amazing, well-rounded, determined, fun group of kids to mentor!

An Evening of Art @ Sarah Jane's Art Studio

Sarah Jane's Art Studio
March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time to celebrate the incredible potential and needs of people with developmental, intellectual and autism disabilities.

Elk and Cameron Counties’ Behavior and Developmental Program out of Ridgway partnered with me again this year (last time was March 2023) to provide a magical evening of painting and fellowship at the studio.
My heart is still overflowing with warmth. The love and sweetness that filled the room was palpable. It’s hard to describe….I guess you’d just have to be there. I feel blessed to have been a part of it. These remarkable souls may have limitations, but they are undoubtedly gifted by God with an extra measure of love, kindness, and gentleness. We can all learn valuable lessons from their example. They embody these qualities effortlessly, without even striving. That’s just the way they are. I’m getting choked up just writing this. Check out their beautiful art. Each piece is one of a kind- just like them. 🧡

March 2025 Service Member Spotlight: Major Thomas E. Clark

March 2025 Service Member Spotlight: Major Thomas E. Clark

Thomas Edward Clark was born on April 15, 1939 in Emporium, Pennsylvania as the third son of the late Otto and Josephine Schager Clark. An avid hunter and fisherman, Tom enjoyed the outdoors. He was a star fullback at Cameron County High School, graduating with honors in 1957. After attending Penn State University for two years, Clark received an appointment to the Air Force Academy from which he graduated in 1963. The graduation ceremony included the first commencement address to the Academy from a sitting president, President John F. Kennedy. That same year Tom married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Mottern of Emporium. The 1963 Air Force Academy Yearbook states that Tom's goals were to be a pilot and a politician.

On February 8, 1969 Captain Clark was flying an F-100D Super Sabre, of 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 37th Tactical Fight Wing, in a flight of four mission over Laos. The flight controlled by an F-4 Forward Air Controller, engaged a 23mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery battery. Captain Clark's aircraft was hit by rounds from the artillery battery, burst into flames, and crashed. No parachute was observed. Aircraft in the area conducted visual and electronic searches, with negative results. Subsequent to the incident, the U.S. Air Force determined Captain Clark to be Killed in Action (KIA), Body not Recovered (BNR.) The Air Force posthumously promoted Tom to the rank of Major.

On February 12, 1991, a joint U.S./Lao People's Democratic Republic team investigated the crash of Thomas E. Clark's F-100. In late 1991, a Thai citizen turned over to U.S. Officials in Thailand human remains as well as military identification tag and a partial military identification tag bearing Major Clark's name. The remains were identified as other than Captain Clark's. In February of 1992, a team worked to excavate the suspected crash site of Thomas E. Clark in the Savannakhet Province with no apparent results. In October of 2005, a joint team re-investigated the crash site excavated in 1992. Another bone fragment was found but later identified as not part of a human. In October of 2009, another joint team re-excavated portions of the crash site and recovered human remains. After extensive examination, including isotope testing, the human remains were identified as the remains of Thomas E. Clark.

The Clark family was notified in June 2011 that the remains of Thomas E. Clark would be returned to the family.

The Emporium Community welcomed Major Clark home on Oct. 20th, 2011. A Pennsylvania State Police escort was provided from the Pittsburgh airport. On Interstate 80 at several exits, various Honor Guards stood along the roadside to pay respects as the caravan passed by. Once the caravan arrived in St. Marys, they received additional escorts by the Patriot Riders to Emporium. When the caravan arrived in Emporium, the streets were lined with community members to welcome their local hero home. The football team stood together as one element of the community with their game jerseys on for the game that evening. Additional tributes were provided such as an order by Governor Corbett to have flags at the state capital and Emporium to be flown at half-mast.

In order to properly remember Major Thomas E. Clark’s sacrifice to his country and to thank the community, the Clark family established a scholarship for a Cameron County High School senior. Funds for the scholarship have come from Seneca Resources, selling Christmas Trees from the Clark Family Christmas Tree farm, private and family donations. (Caldwell, June. "Cameron County News." Cameron County Blogspot, February 18 2019, https://cameroncountynews.blogspot.com/2019/02/major-thomas-e-clark.html. February 28 2025.)

The Cameron County America 250 PA Committee would like to thank Major Clark for his contributions to his country and to his community by honoring him as the Service Member of the Month for March 2025. #Salute250PA #PAProud #America250PA #EPIC

Cameron County Pennsylvania Issued BDO Zone "A" Rating for Woody BioMass

CAMERON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA ISSUED BDO ZONE ‘A’ RATING FOR WOODY BIOMASS

‘A’ Rating Highlights Promising Woodland Resource Utilization Opportunities
 March 7th, 2025

Cameron County, Ecostrat and the BDO Zone Initiative are pleased to announce the issue of an investment grade BDO Zone ‘A’ Rating for Cameron County, Pennsylvania. The BDO Zone is rated for 450,000 bone dry tons per year of woody biomass and extends within a 75-mile radius from the center point, Emporium, PA.

Cameron County’s ‘A’ rating indicates high prospective viability to support new biobased plant operations, with low risk associated with Feedstock Supply and Infrastructure in the Zone. The region is a leading North American hub for hardwood lumber and wood products, with strong logging and transportation capacity. The area benefits from synergy between pulpwood markets and public forest management, complemented by high-quality infrastructure attributes, including low-cost natural gas, electricity, and rail access. Strong community support, affordable living costs, and a skilled workforce further strengthen the region’s development potential.

“Our ‘A’ rating underscores the transformative potential of our woody biomass resources,” stated Cliff Clark, Executive Director, Cameron County Industrial Development Authority. “We are excited to collaborate with biobased companies to develop our woody biomass value chain, fostering economic opportunities and positioning our region as a center for innovative woody biomass-based manufacturing.”

Jordan Solomon, Chairman of the BDO Zone Initiative, stated, “Cameron County’s BDO Zone ‘A’ rating for close to half a million tons of woody biomass demonstrates exceptional investment potential in the region. This designation will catalyze economic growth and job creation while advancing Pennsylvania’s strategic woody biomass utilization opportunities.”

To see the full BDO Zone Rating for Cameron County, PA, please click here, or  visit www.bdozone.org.

About The BDO Zone Initiative
The Biofuel Development Opportunity (BDO) Zone Initiative certifies ‘regional readiness’ for bio-manufacturing, creates global connections and ignites an influx of new energy opportunities for farmers, economic developers, and rural businesses. A BDO Zone rating is an internationally recognized, standards-based technical risk assessment of a region’s feedstock, supply chain, and infrastructure risk with respect to the development potential for new biofuel plants. BDO Zone ratings are site location bullseyes for bio-project development. Investment grade ratings are force-multipliers for attracting new manufacturing plants to the areas where they are most likely to succeed, drive investment and create jobs.

For more information on the BDO Zone Initiative, contact info@bdozone.org.
To view all BDO Zone ratings, visit www.bdozone.org. Check out the BDO Zone LinkedIn page for news and updates.

Ecostrat is the North American leader in biomass due diligence for biofuels, renewable chemicals, biogas, and bio-product project development and finance. Jordan Solomon (jordan.solomon@ecostrat.com) is Chairman of the BDO Zone Initiative and President of Ecostrat (www.ecostrat.com).

Stanley Gray Hastings, Sr.

Stanley Gray Hastings, Sr., age 91, of Emporium, PA passed away at UPMC Cole, Coudersport, PA on Wednesday morning (March 5, 2025) following a courageous battle with multiple cancers. He was born November 1, 1933 in Wellsboro, PA a son of the late John G. and Rachel Brown Hastings. Our father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend led a long and fulfilling life. In his youth, he helped his dad with an ice business, working on jobs in auto shops, bellhop at the Penn Wells Hotel, and a cleaner at the Arcadia Theater in Wellsboro before serving in the US Coast Guard. He graduated, in the class of 1951, from Wellsboro High School and the Chicago Institute of Applied Science studying criminal identification in law enforcement. He also studied at state sponsored courses on civil and criminal law and experience in fingerprint identification bureau of the US Army.

He served as a special police officer for two years and in 1956, he started as full-time Wellsboro patrolman. He resigned from these positions after serving from 1956 to 1960.

He served as a Pennsylvania deputy game protector from 1960 through 1964. He attended intensive training at the Pennsylvania Fish Commission’s Bellfonte Hatchery which included fish hatchery, biology, propagation, distribution of fish, fish laws and law enforcement where he graduated in the first class of wardens.

In 1965, Stan chose Cameron County for he served as "Fish Warden ", "Waterways Patrolman“ and Pennsylvania Waterways and Conservation Officer until his retirement in 1995. While serving as Cameron County Waterways Patrolman, he had many deputies serving with him throughout the years. One had a special interest in rattlesnakes. Stan tells his family stories of collecting rattles in his youth for spending money. That attraction led to many years of rattlesnake handling. In fact, at the time of his death, he was the oldest licensed rattlesnake handler in the state of Pennsylvania. Also a member of the "fang club "as during his career he had been bitten three times. He was also requested to do a private family show for former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge.

Some of his best memories and stories were of spending time working with our late game protector, Norm Erickson. Throughout Stan’s years, he was awarded forest fire warden, Pennsylvania State Police crimes code courses and in 1975, outstanding waterways patrolman for North Central Region, three years National Rifle Association, Police sharpshooting and marksmanship and many other awards. In 1995, he was presented a certificate from DER for serving 30 years as a forest fire warden and in 2005 conservationist of the year.

He was a member of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club, Bucktail Watershed Association, Sinnamahoning Sportsmans Club and James Zwald Chapter of the Trout Unlimited. He was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church and Endless Mountains Methodist Churches in Emporium.

He is survived by a daughter, Diana M. Groome (David) and a son, Stanley G. Hastings, Jr. (Dorothy) both of Emporium; 4 grandchildren: Brandon M. Alloe, St. Marys, Kaleena Tabicas (Virgil), Fall River, MA; Brian G. Hastings (Ashley), Pittsburgh and Stephanie Margo (Andy), Pittsburgh, 3 great grandsons: Virgil Tabicas, III, AJ and Isaac Margo; 2 brothers, William Hastings (Cindy), New York and Richard Hastings (Linda), Wellsboro; 2 sisters, Marjorie Freeman (Jack) and Margaret Hastings, both of Wellsboro; numerous nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Eric Hastings in infancy and a brother, John G. Hastings, Jr.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, 1284 Sizerville Road, Emporium, PA on Thursday (March 20, 2025) at 12:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Andrew Spore, Pastor of Endless Mountains Methodist Church officiating. The PA Fish Commision will hold a brief service followed by a military service by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.
