CC Historical Society Event Oct. 24th

 

James Baumgratz, local author of the area, will speak at Fall Cameron County Historical Society Event Saturday October 24, 2026, at the VFW in Emporium at 2:00 PM.

His talk will focus on Several of the Hauntings reported and included in his Hauntings book: Glover Cemetery, Quehanna Trail, Disappearance of George Babb from the 1850's leaving Sinnemahoning and what was recently sighted deep in the woods ... He will also touch on the unsolved homicide of Michael Scordo from 1925, in which his body was left at the base of Norwich Mountain and how his assassination tied into the Black Hand operating in Emporium at that time......which is the subject of his upcoming book..."The Camorra." The rise of the Black Hand in the New York Twin Tiers and the Pennsylvania Wilds during Prohibition.

Baumgratz was born and raised in St. Mary’s. He is a graduate of Clarion University, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He has worked his entire life throughout the area. He began writing earnestly in 2017 and is the author of 8 books dealing with local true crime and his latest book deals with Hauntings in the Pennsylvania Wilds. He is a professional juried artisan with the Pennsylvania Wilds Cooperative and is always working on one or two book projects. His latest book features over 200 Haunted locations throughout the Pennsylvania Wilds.

His next book will focus on the bloody war the “Black Hand” waged in New York’s Twin Tiers and the Northern Pennsylvania Wilds. Jim enjoys the great Pennsylvania Wilds where he maintains a “writing cabin” and spends many weekends exploring all that the Wilds has to offer, especially the mysterious and forgotten past. He is the father of one son, Drew (Caitlin) and the grandfather of two girls, Zoey and Miah, who reside in Ridgway.
