8/12/2018 1:00 PM POOLSIDE CHAT: TOXIC CONNECTIONS: Have you ever heard of DDT? Between the 1950’s and the 1970’s the eagle population declined rapidly. This decline was traced back to a pesticide called DDT. During our program we’ll learn what a pesticide is and how pesticides enter our food chains? Afterward, we’ll play a fun action packed game reiterating what we learned!

Harold Grimm, Jr

Harold Grimm, Jr., 57 of E. Allegany Ave., Emporium passed away suddenly in his home on August 2, 2018. He was born August 15th 1961, in St. Marys the son of Natalie Grimm, Emporium and the late Harold Grimm, Sr.

Harold was born and raised in Emporium Pa but had also spent several years in Florida and Maryland. In his youth Harold was an active outdoors man and farmer. He loved to spend time fishing, hunting, and trapping, in addition to raising cows, pigs and horses. Harold also loved his dogs Annie and Pepsi very much. Harold will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother Natalie and two children Tommy Clinard (Tampa Fla) and 

Jami Lupino (Harrisburg Pa).

There will be No Visitation. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (August 6, 2018) at 12:00 PM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, 

Pastor, as Celebrant.

Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Robert K. Patros

Robert K. Patros, 78, of 871 Hillcrest, Emporium, PA died at his residence on Friday morning. (August 3, 2018). He was born December 11, 1939 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin a son of the late Kenneth and Angeline Shepherd Patros. He married Marsha Westfield Patros, who survives. 

He retired from the State DCNR where he worked for many years as a mechanic. After retirement he owned and operated Bobbies Small Engine Repair where he was known as "Mr. Fix it". He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Emporium.

In addition to his wife he is survived by son, Tim Patros, Wisconsin; two daughters, Debra Kramer, Waukesha, WI and Pamela Elmhorst, Wisconsin Rapids, WI; one step-daughter, Deborah Pleskonko, West Decatur, PA; and a step-son, Ray Shively, Port Allegany; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Petros, Milwaukee, WI; and a sister, BJ Zulick, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. 

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tory Marvin, 

There will be No Visitation.

 A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 205 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday, (August 25, 2018) at 11:00 AM with Pastor Emelia Burdick, Pastor, officiating.

Patricia L. Costanzo

Patricia L. Costanzo, 91, formerly of 2357 Rich Valley Road, Emporium, PA, died at UPMC-Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday afternoon, August 3, 2018 following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 1, 1927 in Emporium, PA, a daughter to the late George and Grace Ness Strahl. On February 22, 1949, she married the late Frank P. Costanzo in St. Mark Catholic Church, Emporium.

Patricia was a member of the Class of 1945 of Emporium High School where she was a majorette. She last worked as a case manager for The Office of Aging. She enjoyed reading, late night TV, listening to music and her 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

She is survived by three sons; Robert Costanzo; Frank Costanzo; Timothy (Deborah)Costanzo; two daughters, Pamela (Craig) Burt and Ann (Donald) Losey all of Emporium; seven grandchildren: Zachary, Luke & Debra Losey, Tony (Caitlyn) and Louis Costanzo; Ann & Jessica Burt and one great granddaughter Emma.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra A. Costanzo and a brother, Robert Strahl.

There will be No Visitation.

 Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (August 6, 2018) at 10:00 AM with Rev. Paul S.Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

James has been the president of Zito Media since its inception in 2005 and has more than 31 years of cable industry and commercial communications experience, including Vice President of Strategic Planning at Adelphia Communications Corporation and Chief Executive Officer of Adelphia Business Solutions. Mr. Rigas holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard College and Master of Arts in Economics and Juris Doctor from Stanford University. 

 Zito Media was born of the cable systems in the Coudersport, Port Allegany and Austin areas in 2005. Today, Zito Media bills itself as “a full service, local telecommunications company, offering digital high-definition television, high-speed internet, and digital voice services, to rural markets in 16 states.”

Theresa M. (Daisy) Smith

Theresa M. (Daisy) Smith, 95, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of Lindenwood Dr., Emporium died at the Manor on Monday morning. (July 30, 2018) She was born May 1, 1923 in Clermont, PA a daughter of the late Carmine A. and Alma Falbo Grillo. On April 20, 1974 in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, Smethport, PA she married the late Carl E. Smith.

Daisy was a 1941 graduate of the former Mt. Jewett High School. She was employed at Sylvania for over 45 years. While working at Sylvania she was an avid bowler, bowling on the Sylvania teams for many years. She was a lifetime member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium, a member of the CD of A, and served many years as a Eucharistic minister. Daisy was an avid artist specializing in oil and watercolors. She love to travel, was a prize-winning quilter, enjoyed square dancing, and was an avid reader.

She is survived by three children; Joann (Jack) D'Ambrosio, Pittsburgh; Susan (Arthur) Beidler, Hedgesville, WV; Steve Smith, Bunola, PA; seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren; one brother, John (Frances) Grillo, Crystal City, MO and many nieces and nephews who were very special to her.

 In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Lori Smith, two brothers, Joseph and Anthony "Tony" Grillo, one sister, Sarah DeLucia.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (August 4, 2018) at 10:00 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

Rotary News

PA State Representative, Martin T. Causer, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon July 24th.

Representative Causer graduated from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, earning a bachelor’s degree in history & political science. He was then elected as an Annin Township Supervisor at the age of 19 and held that position for 9 years. He also worked as a dispatcher at the 9-1-1 Center in Smethport and served as a part-time police officer for the Borough of Port Allegany. Mr. Causer is also a member of the Bradford Rotary Club.

In 2002, he was elected to the House making it a priority to ensure state government be accessible to everyone in the 67th District. He currently services as chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. Mr. Causer operates 3 full-time district offices located in Bradford, Kane & Coudersport and offers monthly satellite hours in Emporium and Port Allegany. Representative Causer discussed legislation regarding emergency services such as ambulance, school funding, public safety and road and highway issues.

........." EMPORIUM, PA For the first time in more than a decade, local business is booming in Emporium. Six businesses have either opened their doors or have plans in place to open a business along 4th Street in the past year.

 "I've been here for going on 11 years, and I don't remember all of them being filled," said Cameron County Chamber Director Tina Solak. "I would say most of the time, we would have at least three that would be vacant, and they would always be different ones, they would rotate. "We now have one office, that could be converted very easily into a storefront," she said. "We have that space available and on 4th Street, from Walnut to Maple streets, that is the only non-committed building. Now there are two other buildings on 4th street that sit vacant, but, the paperwork has been signed and it's in the works to have those particular store fronts get filled." So what's prompting this boom in the area?.........."

George B. Stevenson Dam at Sinnemahoning State Park

Park Advisory: Due to high water levels, the mooring area of the George B. Stevenson Dam at Sinnemahoning State Park is closed until further notice. 

The Lake Day Use Area entrance is closed at Route 872, and the lake is closed to all fishing and boating activities. This temporary closure is weather-related; the Lake Day Use Area will reopen when water levels subside.

Outstanding Owls - Saturday, July 28, 2018, 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM. Join park intern, Alyson Rotello, to learn about the owl species of Pennsylvania and what makes these powerful, yet stealthy birds such great predators. Campground talk followed by 1-hour video. Popcorn will be provided. All are welcome to attend his free, family-friendly program. Meet at the campground amphitheater.

My Cousin Momo - Sunday, July 29, 2018, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Through story, crafts, and simple activities, learn about Momo, the flying squirrel, and how he differs from his cousins. This program, intended for children ages 3-8, highlights the award-winning 2018 PA One Book, "My Cousin Momo". Older and younger siblings welcome to attend. No pre-registration required to attend this free program.

Free Kayak Demo Day at Sinnemahoning 

Experience the fun of kayaking and paddle boarding during the free Kayak Demo Day at Sinnemahoning State Park.

On Saturday, July 28 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM Country Squirrel Outfitters, of Ridgway, PA, will have a variety of kayak styles available for use and will provide expert assistance and basic instruction throughout the day.

This free program will be held at the Lake Day Use Area of the George B. Stevenson reservoir at Sinnemahoning State Park. Stop by any time between 12:00 noon and 3:00 PM. All participants will have an opportunity to try out the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards on the water. Watershoes and shorts are recommended. Life vests will be provided.

Rose E. Wilk

 

 Rose E. Wilk, 87, of Guy and Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of Truman died at Penn Highlands Elk, St. Marys on Monday morning (July 23, 2018). 

She was born October 15, 1930 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late Raymond and Barbara Mahovlich Reed. On April 18, 1953 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Marys she married Thomas R. Wilk, who survives.

Mrs. Wilk graduated from St. Marys High School in the class of 1948. She retired from Cameron Manufacturing where she worked for many years as a switchboard operator. Years ago she worked at Sylvania She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. Rose enjoyed the fall season, celebrating her birthday and Halloween. 

In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Matthew) Grimone, Emporium; two grandchildren: Heather and Bre Grimone, two brothers, George (Nancy) Reed, Beechwood; Bruce (Sandy) Reed, Rathbun. 

In addition to her parents he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Wilk; and 

a grandson, Cash Grimone. 

There will be No Visitation. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at St. Mark Catholic Cemetery Chapel to be held Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2:00 PM..

25th Annual Bucktail Reunion

Vehicle collision on Rt 120 East of Emporium

At 8:25 PM on Sunday, Emporium Fire & ambulance responded to a 2 vehicle accident on the curve past GKN, Plant 1, Rt. 120. A car traveling East on 120 collided with a pickup truck. The occupants of the car were wearing their seat belts. Unknown information about the driver of the pickup truck Two occupants of the car have been transported to Penn Highlands Elk hospital for treatment.

Lyman Run State Park Announces ATV Accessible Campground Pilot Program

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
today announced the Bureau of State Parks will be
conducting a pilot program, permitting ATV usage
within the Lyman Run State Park Lower Campground,
beginning Spring of 2019. Starting May 24, the Friday
 before Memorial Day, through September 29, the last
Sunday in September, campers using campsites in the
Lower Campground will be permitted to park their
 ATV’s at their campsites.



This will allow campers with ATVs to use the campground road, providing direct access from their campsite to the Susquehannock State Forest ATV trail system at the Lyman Trailhead, located 3/4 mile from the campground along Lyman Run Road. Lyman Run Road is a township road that is open to ATV traffic. This pilot program will run for two seasons starting in 2019 through 2020, after which it will be evaluated. All operators must possess a valid Driver’s License to drive on the campground road and make the connection to the trailhead from Lyman Run Road.  July 23rd - 6:00 to 7:30 PM

July 31st - 6:00 to 7:30 PM

August 2nd - 6:00 to 7:30 PM

After that, we will be breaking the girls into two squads with the hope that each squad can practice once a week.
