Cameron County is the ideal place to disconnect from hectic daily life and reconnect with the natural world in welcoming community.
Visitors wishing to unplug from their busy urban lives will find a lush outdoor paradise where they can reconnect with nature and unwind in the quiet mountains. Travelers will find beautiful mountains covered in pine and mixed hardwood forests crisscrossed by clear, cold creeks and streams which provide rich habitat for bald eagles, elk, deer, bear, turkey, coyote, bobcat, fisher, and a variety of fish species.
Emporium, the county seat, has many beautiful public art murals throughout the town and lots of opportunities for outdoor adventure. The 18.9-mile West Creek Trail offers users a scenic route to enjoy between Emporium to St. Marys. With its connections to trails in the 200,000-acre Elk State Forest, bicyclists, snowmobilers, hikers, and other users of the well-maintained West Creek rail-trail can find easy access to downtown Emporium for dining, shopping, fuel, and lodging. Nearby, the Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail welcomes horseback riders. The Sinnemahone Triple Crown is a 3-part series of adventure races featuring a down river paddle, ultra-trail run, and gravel bike race. The annual Weekend in Wilds in early July features a Big Foot hunt, duck race, vendors, and “The Loudest Fireworks” in the Pennsylvania’s Great Outdoors region. Christmas in Cameron celebrates the holiday season with a parade, vendors, fun events, and a best decorated house contest.
The Bucktail Overlook near Sterling Run, also known as Top of the World and Mason Hill Overlook, offers incredible panoramic views of the Sinnemahoning Valley and surrounding mountains. The dark skies of this remote mountain top are one of the best places in Pennsylvania’s Great Outdoors region for star gazing on clear night. The county is developing a Stargazing Park that will offer visitors a place built to enjoy the amazing night sky over Cameron County.
At the eastern edge of the county, Sinnemahoning State Park’s Wildlife Center attracts visitors from across the northeast for its dark skies, abundant wildlife, and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Park staff offers guided eagle-spotting pontoon boat tours of the Stevenson Dam, including some with an onboard brunch included, as well as canoe and kayak instruction, outdoor photography workshops, and a variety of wildlife-watching opportunities. Elk, bald eagles, osprey, and black bears are a few particularly interesting species often seen here.
Visitors can also discover elk in the wild as they explore the nearly 50,000-acre Quehanna Wild Area on Cameron County’s southern border. From the heart of the Quehanna Wild Area to Sinnemahoning, motorcyclists can ride the twists and turns of the rugged and scenic Wykoff Run Road, considered one of the best motorcycle rides in the state. Bucktail State Park Natural Area follows 75 miles of the scenic Route 120, known as the Bucktail Trail. The name, also commemorated by the town of Driftwood’s Bucktail Monument and the 34-mile Bucktail Path, honors the local 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry soldiers, known as the Bucktails, who fought for the Union during the Civil War. Sizerville State Park, on the county’s northern edge, features a campground and pool, as well as many opportunities for outdoor adventure.
Each spring, anglers converge on the area’s many streams for the much-anticipated opening of trout season. Throughout the year, the clear, cold mountain waters provide some of the best trout and smallmouth bass fishing in the state. The elk rut or breeding season signals the arrival of autumn in north woods. During fall and winter, hunters come to the mountains to enjoy camp life and the search for wild turkey, whitetail deer, elk, black bear, and small game.
