Cameron County Businesses Making Shop Small Fun

Save some of your holiday shopping for the Saturday following Thanksgiving and shop local. The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce organizing Shop Small Cameron County for November 24. One dozen businesses will participate this year offering sales and chances for you to take home prizes.

Each time a shopper spends $10 on Shop Small Saturday at a participating business they will be entered to win prizes. Shoppers can register for the event on Facebook and receive an extra ticket in the drawing. The contest will run from 8am till 3pm. The drawings will take place at 4:00pm at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center.

Participating businesses include Aroma Café, Buttonwood Motel and Restaurant, CDH Designs, Cabin Kitchen, Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center, Emporium ShurFine, Floor Masters, Flowers N Things, Fox’s Pizza Den in Emporium, L& M Lumber, The Hive, and Pizza Palace Plus.

Other businesses wishing to participate can register by calling the chamber office at 814-486-4314.

Unique Christmas Gifts

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center offering unique gifts hand created by more than 60 artists from the region. Prices range from $5 to $200. “We are fortunate that so many talented people live in the area,” says chamber director Tina Solak. Jewelry, quilts, photography, reclaimed wood trays and candles are just a few of the items for sale.

In addition, the chamber offers Chamber Bucks that can be used like cash to purchase groceries, fuel, meals, hotel stays, furniture, automobile repairs and more. Chamber Bucks do not have an expiration date and are great gifts for employers to give to employees.

The Eat Drink Explore the Elk Loop passport program continues. The booklet or passport is purchased for $35. It gives the bearer access to 11 food/beverage locations in Cameron and Elk Counties. If the purchaser completes all the visits within one year of purchase, they receive a one of a kind sweat shirt.

Christmas in the Wilds Parade Seeking Participants

Christmas in the Wilds parade will stop off Saturday December 8 at noon. The participants will be led by a police escort, followed by the Cameron County High School Marching Red Raiders. This year businesses are encouraged to construct a float or walk the one mile route handing out candy or even coupons to those watching.

House Decorating Contest

Time Running Out

The deadline to register your home for the Cameron County Decked Out House Decorating Contest is Saturday November 24.

The annual Cameron County Chamber of Commerce event is growing with Student Transportation America (STA) providing a bus on Thursday December 13 to tour the homes. The bus will depart from the chamber office on East Fourth Street at 6pm and return at 8pm.

The prize amounts have been boosted by a generous donation from The Hygrade Inn. First place will be $200, second place $150 and third $100. In addition, a group of judges will award the David Karkoska Prize of $250. In addition to the decorating awards, three voters selected randomly will be given $100.

A $5.00 entry fee will qualify a home for the competition and place a home on the map. Decorations must be operational Friday December 7 through Sunday December 16 6-9pm.

Cameron County Community Chest 2019 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

We are six weeks into the 2019 fund drive. We have had a great start. Through Nov. 16th, we have collected $7,954.00 toward our $19,000 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2019.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. 

 This month’s feature will be the Package Team.

A group of Rich Valley women started the Package Team over 20 years ago. The team currently sends out around 85 packages (a little piece of Cameron County for Christmas) each year to our local service men, women and reservists. Boxes are filled with snacks, coffee, toiletries, paper, pens, newspapers, playing cards, Christmas ornaments made by the folks at Guy and Mary Felt Manor, letters from the kids at Woodland Elementary. Some items are donated by local businesses. Other items are purchased. Postage is the largest cost. Deadline Nears for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities now have until Dec. 31, 2018, to apply for the state’s 2017 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. Remember, assistance through my offices is always free. You need not pay a private firm for assistance.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.

The 2018 rebate applications will be available starting in February.

Shippen Township Thanksgiving Hours

Shippen Township will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd and Monday, November 26th in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

 Thursday’s refuse pick-up will be on Wednesday and Monday’s pick-up will be on Tuesday. 

 All other refuse collections will remain the same.

Rotary News

Bradley Chapman, President & CEO, of Penn Highlands Elk was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting November 13th. Mr. Chapman spoke of the Penn Highlands Health System mergers and acquisitions and recent signed letters of intent to acquire J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntington and Jefferson Manor in Brookville. Penn Highlands Health System operates on a 63 million dollar budget and employees 600 with an additional 250 employees at Community Nurses.

 In 2015 the hospital was designated as a critical access hospital for reimbursement purposes as a way to prevent small hospitals from closing. Last year the hospital had a profit of 1.3 million and was rated by the Department of Health as deficiency free. Penn Highlands continues to work on their community perception and the recruitment of physicians and other medical talent. Margaret A. Horning, 80, of 105 S. Broad St., Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands Elk, St. Marys, PA on Tuesday morning. (November 13, 2018)

She was born September 16, 1938 in Reynoldsville, PA a daughter of the late Edward and Blanche Baun Huntington. On December 22, 1962 she married the late George E. Horning who died Jan. 15, 1978. Margaret was especially fond of animals and enjoyed volunteering at the local SPCA.

She is survived by two daughters, Vickie Doud and her late husband James, Emporium and Lisa (Clifton) Collins, Emporium; one grandson, David Matthew Horning; three brothers, Bill (Jane) Huntington, Big Run, PA; Henry (Carol) Schwab, Reynoldsville; Harry Schwab, Reynoldsville; two sisters, Joyce (Larry) Miller, Brookville and Mary Lou McAulay, Emporium. 

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her son-in-law James Doud; a sister, Elsie M. Heagy and three brothers, Ron and George Huntington and Charles in infancy. 

At her request there will be No Service or Visitation.

 Burial was in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

George M. Yahnite

George M. Yahnite of Guy and Mary Felt Manor passed away Thursday morning (Nov. 8, 2018) at Penn Highlands Elk. He was born in St. Marys, PA on July 8, 1943 the son of the late Margaret Donlin Palamarchuck and George B. Yahnite. He is survived by and will be missed by brother, Jim Yahnite (Peg) of Canisteo, NY, a sister Mary M. Kolock (Bob) of Fort Mill, SC., nephews and nieces, Matt Yahnite, Bridget Y. Huszar, Kasi Y. Staffen, Christina K. Gratrix, Steven Kolock, several grand nieces and nephews, and many close friends and co-workers.

After graduating from CCHS in 1962, he enlisted in the Navy and served for four years aboard the USS Albany. Following his discharge he attended Penn State DuBois and eventually became employed with GE in Erie. He returned to Emporium following a very serious car accident and began his decades long position as chief hoagie sauce maker and George of all trades at Luigi's. A very humble, optimistic, caring, and sharing person, he enjoyed year round fishing in the local streams, visiting with friends and staying close to home. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, the VFW, Legion, and Moose clubs.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA on Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon to be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA where a Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Zak Breniman, owner of Dream Float, located at 934 South St. Marys Street in St. Marys, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting November 6th. Zak, a St. Marys native, and is also the grandson of former Rotary member, Sam Breniman. Also pictured is Rotarian Marsha Hendrickson who has been one of Zak’s clients.

After visiting his uncle, Ken Breniman, in California last August, Zak was introduced to floatation therapy. Zak has spent over a year floating and researching float therapy to bring the best experience to his customers. Floatation experience involves lying on your back in an enclosed float pod, which is filled with 200 gallons of water heated to skin temperature, infused with 1,200 lbs. of pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt. Geocaching Event at Sinnemahoning State Park

Geocaching Event at Sinnemahoning State Park

The staff of Sinnemahoning State Park would like to invite geocachers for an afternoon of food, fellowship and fun on Saturday, November 10, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. This park has had a great relationship with the caching community over the years, and as the Thanksgiving season approaches, park staff wanted to take the time to say "Thanks" by hosting an event.

Event includes luncheon, a program, and prizes. The event will officially start at 12:00 pm, indoors in the Wildlife Center classroom, with a covered dish luncheon at 12:00 pm. Please bring a covered dish to share, along with stories of your favorite caching adventures this season. Lunch will be followed by a special nature presentation. The event will wrap up at 2:00 pm with the conclusion of the game and awarding of geocaching prizes.

To keep the fun alive for all cachers attending, we have created a short and simple game for the day of the event. In addition, the park will release four new caches on the morning of the event. Special swag inside for the First-To-Find. Please check geocaching.com for the details of the game and the new caches.

Don’t keep the fun to yourself – bring a “newbie”. All cachers are encouraged to bring a person (or two, or three) that has never cached before. This park has very family-friendly caches that would be well suited for introducing newbies to this great activity called geocaching. Most of the 24 caches located in the park are located just a few feet off well groomed trails. The park also has loaner GPS receivers (pre-loaded with waypoints) that newbies can use for finding their first geocache!

This event is a great opportunity to meet the local caching community and share geocaching adventures!

Deborah Hanley, Administrator of the George & Margaret Mee Foundation, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon October 30th. Also pictured is Rotarian, John Rogers, President of the Mee Foundation.

George and Margaret Mee immigrated to the U. S. in 1961 from England. George a diesel engineer and thought to have much to offer the Company, was invited by his brother-in-law, Robert Mallery, to join his sawmill operation in Hancock, NY. One year later, the Company expanded into

Emporium PA and became known as Mallery Lumber Corporation. In 1976, George Mee succeeded Robert Mallery as President of the Company. After the death of Mr. Mee, the Mee Family established the George A. and Margaret Mee Charitable Foundation with assets Mr. Mee realized from his investments in Mallery Lumber Corporation.

The Mee Foundation invests in projects and programs of qualified 502 (C) (3) non-profit organizations that support the communities of Delaware County, NY, Cameron County, PA, Broome County, NY and surrounding areas. Over 10 million has been granted since the Foundation’s inception. In 2017 grants totaled $1,088,596.42 focusing on Education, Community/Recreation, Health/Human Services and Arts/Culture. Some local grants include $15,400.00 to Emporium Volunteer Fire Dept., $75,000.00 to the Cameron County School District, $10,000.00 to JA of Western PA, $150,000.00 to Cameron County Ambulance, $52,500.00 to Northern Tier 

Community Action.

Peter J. Fragale

Peter J. Fragale, 58, of 80 Red Pine Drive, Emporium, PA passed away at his residence, Emporium, PA on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 evening surrounded by his family.

He was born January 27, 1960 in St. Marys, PA a son of the late Michael V. and Jennie Costanzo Fragale. On May 31, 1997 in St. Mark Catholic Church he married Nancy Brown, who survives.

Pete was a lifelong resident of Emporium. He was a graduate of Cameron County High School class of 1977 and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. His career in the IT field include working for Adelphia Communications and Level 3 in Coudersport, private consulting work for the United States Navy and most recently was in charge of the IT Network at Quala-Die in St. Marys. Pete was a member of St. Mark Church in Emporium, was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an award winning local wine maker. He was a member of the Citizens and Northern Emporium Advisory Board and a founding member of the Christmas Benefit Dance Committee.

 In addition to his wife Nancy he is survived by two daughters, Bobbi Fragale and Sophia Fragale, both of Emporium; two sisters, Annette Campbell and Mary Lou Fragale, two brothers, Michael (Kathryn) Fragale and Vincent (Molly) Fragale, all of Emporium; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation with Video Tribute will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium on Friday from 4-7 PM. Krystina "Krys" Moore, 25, of Emporium, PA died at UPMC-Altoona Hospital, Altoona, PA on Tuesday morning (October 30, 2018). She was born January 1, 1993 in Nuremberg, Germany a daughter of Ben A. Moore, Sr., Anniston, Alabama and Silvia Frank Moore, Emporium, PA

Krys enjoyed hanging with friends, listening to music, arts and crafts, taking walks, games, and playing pool. Most of all she loved spending time with her daughter Novalee and anything Novalee was interested in.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Silvia (David Burlingame) Moore, Emporium; father and stepmother, Ben A. (May) Moore, Sr., Anniston, AL; one daughter, Novalee Raffaele, Emporium; Novalee's father, Mark Raffaele, Emporium; maternal grandparents, Walter (Christa Platzer) Frank, Emporium; paternal grandmother, Juanita Moore, Anniston, AL; one sister, Johanna (Robert) Byers, Birmingham, AL; two brothers, Ben A. Moore, Jr., Birmingham, AL; Walter Moore, Anniston, AL along with several aunts, uncles and two nieces and a nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, A.C. Moore.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 306 S Spruce St, Emporium, PA on Saturday (November 3, 2018) at 5:00 PM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 3-5 PM

Community Heart & Soul Workshop

Cameron County Heart & Soul Project Hosts Volunteer Training and Story Gathering Workshop

“It seems to me that we have a lot of story yet to tell”.— Walt Disney

(Emporium, PA, October 24, 2018): “The process of gathering stories builds community social bonds. Stories help us to understand others. Most people want to know they’re seen and heard in the community. And, honoring their stories is one way we can do that.” This was stated by Jen Danifo, Senior Program Officer of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. She was the guest speaker at a Community Heart & Soul workshop training, Phase 2.1: Gather, Listen To and Share Stories, hosted by the Cameron County Project Volunteer Corps (CCP) in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the Orton Family Foundation. The seminar was held at DCNR Bureau of Forestry: Elk State Forest in Emporium, PA on October 24, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

During the workshop, an explanation of the objectives of the CCP was given. These aspirations, among many, include completing a two year survey of community statements to be used for funding and implementing programs, encouraging residents to engage more in the community to strengthen our unity, and to ensure that all voices are heard/valued to build a better Cameron County. With awareness of these goals, Danifo stressed that this is why gathering stories is so vital. She said that considering most people love to tell stories and have a personal/emotional connection to those narratives, they will likely be open to share with others on how they feel. It’s the hope of the CCP that this ideal will springboard stories from residents on what they love about Cameron County and how to improve it in order to prosper now and for future generations to come. It was agreed upon by the workshop attendees that each person has a story to tell, but it’s up to everyone to pull that story out, cherish it, and use it for the betterment and unification of the community as a whole. All meeting participants engaged in story collecting activities to sharpen skills in developing questions, determining people’s needs, and building trust. Also, Leanne Tingay, Senior Associate of Programs of the Orton Family Foundation, provided advice on using “connectors” and interviewing groups of people to reach various demographics. Tingay was accompanied Joan Wagner, Associate of the Orton Family Foundation, who offered tips on one-on-one interviews and creative ideas to go about it. Moving forward, the CCP will use Wednesday’s training to generate a full-scale engagement plan to branch out in the county to not only gather stories, but to also guarantee that each resident group is heard as a way to reach the project’s overall goals.

According to Jessica Herzing, CCP Project Coordinator, Phase 2 was made possible by the accomplishments of Phase 1 which was laying the groundwork and launching the project. Herzing said successes include creating a website, jump starting phase 2 by decorating the town with balloons, establishing a community network analysis with 23 distinct resident group voices, creating the CCP Volunteer Corps, results of the postcard home survey, the Cam Co Cookout, and the project’s invitation to the stakeholder focus group for the tri-county comprehensive plan. Adding to Herzing’s comments, Tina Solak, Executive Director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce, stated that the greatest achievement of all is being finally recognized and accepted by the community for what the project stands for.

Also in attendance at the meeting with the CCP were special guests: Meredith Hill, DCNR and Director of the Pennsylvania Wilds Program; Laurie Zierer, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Humanities council; John Schlimm, board member of the PHC and St. Marys resident.
