Sinnemahoning State Park November and December Programs

As the weather cools and thoughts start turning to holiday preparations, take time out of your busy schedule to visit the tranquility and open spaces of Sinnemahoning State Park. November and December programs at the park offer something for all ages.

Coffee with the Birds 
Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa, INDOORS, as we participate in a Project Feeder Watch bird count and learn to identify the birds visiting the feeders just outside the classroom window. Program will be repeated twice a month throughout the fall and winter birdfeeding season.
 Dates include: November 5 & 9 & others listed below 

Thursday, November 17 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. STEM Day for Homeschoolers.
Students will participate in a variety of hands-on educational activities and demonstrations while working on their science, technology, engineering, and math skills while building catapults, bridges, and egg harnesses. All students welcome. Pre-register by Tuesday, November 15. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, November 19 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM. Coffee with the Birds. 
 Same description as November 5th program. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, November 19 1:00 PM–2:00 PM. Fishers and Their Weasel Cousins. 
 The holidays are coming, so let’s learn about a fun and weasel-y family made up of fishers that don’t fish but otters that do, mink with luscious brown fur, and ermine that turn white for the winter. PowerPoint presentation enhanced by taxidermy, furs, and skulls. All ages. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Thursday, December 1 8:00 AM. Registration opens for the 2023 Winter Women in the Wilds weekend to be held at Sinnemahoning State Park February 3-5. Register online at

Saturday, December 3 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Natural Ornaments. 
Learn how to create beautiful homemade ornaments using local natural materials like acorns, pinecones, and seed heads. Materials and assistance provided. Program is free. All ages and experience levels welcome. Children under age 10 require adult supervision. No pre-registration required. 
Wildlife Center Classroom.

Thursday, December 15 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Homeschool Day: Natural Ornaments. Homeschool families, learn about natural materials that can be used for making homemade ornaments, then create one-of-a-kind ornaments using pine cones, acorns, seed heads, and more. All grade levels. Children under age 10 will require adult assistance. Pre-registration required by Tues., Dec 13. 
Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, December 17 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Holiday Open House. 
View the Wildlife Center all decked out in its winter splendor during this relaxing holiday event. Sip cocoa or mulled cider by the cozy fire or listen to the music of the season as you make a natural ornament. Light refreshments will be offered. Something for everyone to enjoy!

Tuesday, December 27 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Winter Tree and Plant Identification
Learn to distinguish trees and plants in winter by observing bark, twigs, and cones. Geared toward adults and older youth. Good practice for scouts attending Klondike Derby. Pre-register by Mon., December 26. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Wednesday, December 28 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Animal Tracks, Furs, and Skulls. 
 Learn to identify animals of Pennsylvania by their fur, skulls, tracks, and other sign. Geared toward adults and older youth. Hands-on practice for scouts attending Klondike Derby. Pre-register by Tues., December 27. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Wednesday, December 28 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM. Fire Building Skills. 
Practice building a successful layered fire and learn different methods to strike a spark to light it right. Geared toward adults and older youth. Helpful practice for scouts attending Klondike Derby. Pre-register by Tues., December 27. 40 Maples Day Use Area.

Thursday, December 29 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Outdoor First Aid Skills. 
 Be prepared for your next camping trip. Practice treating cuts, scrapes, sprains, and breaks and learn what to do in “hurry cases”. Geared toward adults and older youth. Includes 3 hours of instruction followed by 1 hour of practice scenarios. Not a certification course. Pre-register by Wed., December 28. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, December 31 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM. Coffee with the Birds. 
Same description as November 5th program. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Saturday, December 31 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Coyotes and Their Kin. 
Compare life size mounts of wolves, coyotes, and foxes while learning about the habits and habitats of these North American species. PowerPoint presentation enhanced by taxidermy mounts. Awesome photo opportunity! Wildlife Center Classroom.
