Steam Mill Road Local Bridge Replacement

North Central PA Regional Planning and Development Commission
🚧 Project Spotlight: Steam Mill Road Local Bridge Replacement 🚧

Since 1940, the Steam Mill Road Bridge in Cameron County has served as a gateway to the 217,000-acre Elk State Forest. Now in poor condition, the bridge has a posted weight limit of only 5 tons.
With support from multiple sources, the Steam Mill Road Bridge is set for a full replacement! Construction of the new bridge is made possible through a $1.23 million Rural Surface Transportation Grant, part of an $8.55 million federal award.
Additional funding from North Central's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and PennDOT brings the total project budget to $2.04 million.
Construction is slated for 2026, ensuring safer access to the Elk State Forest and a critical emergency route to SR 120. Stay tuned—more local bridge projects will be featured in the coming weeks!

Pennsylvania Route 872 (PA 872) & the Lakeview Store

Lakeview Store LLC
Smack dab in the middle of this route 872 you will find Lakeview Store and Cabins across from Sinnemahoning State Park. A great place to relax!

U.S infrastructure
Pennsylvania Route 872 (PA 872) is a state highway spanning approximately 39.8 miles (64.1 km) through Cameron and Potter counties in Pennsylvania.
It begins at PA 120 in Grove Township and extends north to U.S. Route 6 (US 6) and PA 44 in Coudersport. The route starts in Grove Township, Cameron County, as First Fork Road, running north-northeast alongside the First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek through forested regions, including sections of the Elk State Forest.
It skirts the western edge of Sinnemahoning State Park near the George B. Stevenson Reservoir, continuing through sparsely populated areas such as Lushbaugh and First Fork.
Crossing into Wharton Township, Potter County, PA 872 proceeds through the Susquehannock State Forest, passing locales like Berge Run and Wharton.
In Sylvania Township, it reaches Costello, where it turns west onto Costello Road, crossing the creek into Portage Township and entering the borough of Austin.
Here, the route becomes Costello Avenue, then Rugaber Street, intersecting with PA 607 before heading north into Keating Township.
The highway passes near the Austin Dam Memorial Park, site of the historic Austin Dam failure, and continues through rural landscapes into Homer Township as Dividing Ridge Road.
It then traverses agricultural and wooded areas in Eulalia Township, reaching the community of Jenkins Hill before entering Coudersport as Buffalo Street.
PA 872 concludes at the intersection with US 6 and PA 44 in Coudersport, with the roadway continuing as North Hollow Road beyond this point.

The Pennsylvania Invasive Replace-ive Program

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

The Pennsylvania Invasive Replace-ive Program is a new initiative that will give homeowners and others the option to remove invasive trees and shrubs from their property and replace them with native trees. Doing so will help reduce the likelihood of these species becoming unwanted “escapees” into neighboring properties, parks, and forests, and native trees help diversify the urban landscape.
Property owners are encouraged to remove one or more invasive species and receive up to (5) FREE, healthy, native, young replacement trees.
Program events begin in May.

Thank You for a Successful Beef on Weck Fundraiser!

Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library
A Huge Thank You for a Successful Beef on Weck Fundraiser! 🥪🎉

Wow—what an incredible turnout! Thanks to our amazing community, we sold over 200 sandwiches and raised nearly $1,700 to support the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library!

📚✨ We couldn’t have done it without all of you who purchased sandwiches and supported this event. A special shout-out to our hardworking volunteers: Lor & Dave Reed, Joe Dunkle, Jill Perry, and board members Jessica Herzing and Amanda Jones—you kept things running smoothly! 💪

An extra special thank you to Nick Stuckey for not only cooking up all that delicious roast beef but also for going above and beyond to help in every way possible. We truly appreciate you! 🙌

Big thanks to Emporium Food Mart for providing the supplies, Aroma Cafe for donating containers, and Pizza Palace Plus for stepping in with some last-minute essentials. Your generosity and support mean the world to us!
While we did run into a few hiccups with our calculations (hey, it was our first food fundraiser! 😅), overall, it was a huge success—and we will definitely be doing this again (with fewer complications next time)! From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for making this fundraiser such a delicious success!

Causer Issues Statement on Meeting with UPMC Officials

Causer Issues Statement on Meeting with UPMC Officials

COUDERSPORT – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) issued the following statement regarding a meeting with UPMC officials about their plans to eliminate labor and delivery services at UPMC Cole. The meeting involved state officials; county commissioners from Potter, Cameron and McKean counties; and representatives of federal lawmakers, along with several UPMC officials.

“Despite the strong case we laid out for keeping labor and delivery services in here in Coudersport, and the deep concerns we shared about the risks to expectant mothers and their babies, UPMC will not reverse course on its decision.

“Their actions cause a significant maternity care desert with no labor and delivery services in multiple counties in our region. UPMC insists the reason for the decision is their inability to recruit an OB/Gyn physician to Coudersport, along with a shortage of labor and delivery Registered Nurses. UPMC is adamant this is not a financial decision; however, I question that premise because I have heard from area nurses that UPMC Cole pays some of the lowest rates in our region. We have so many exceptionally skilled and talented health care professionals in our region who should be compensated appropriately for their life-saving skills.

“I specifically raised concerns about the risk this action poses for our expectant mothers and babies with long travel times to another facility, transportation accessibility challenges and the burden placed on our already fragile EMS system. In response, we were told UPMC was committed to providing 24/7 ambulance transportation for inter facility transport of patients; personalized coordination of transportation services; and overnight accommodations for expectant mothers and family members, including fuel subsidies.

“Legislators have focused a great deal of resources on rural health care over the last several years but what has become clear to me is our supposedly not-for-profit huge health care companies are failing to live up to their commitment to providing affordable, accessible care in rural communities like ours. We deserve better and I will continue to fight for rural health care.”
