DOC recommends closure of SCI Rockview, Quehanna Boot Camp
"Officials with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced Monday that the Commonwealth has proposed a potential closure of SCI Rockview Prison, in Centre County, and the Quehanna Boot Camp, in Clearfield County.
If the proposal is implemented, DOC officials say it would save the state tens of millions of dollars.
“I know these decisions have a direct impact on our staff and supporting them through this process is a top priority,” says DOC Secretary Dr. Laurel R. Harry. “Every single affected staff member will be guaranteed an offer of a job at their existing pay and classification.”
SCI Rockview is the second-oldest facility in the DOC system and currently houses over 2,100 inmates, and employs an additional 658 staff members.
As for the Quehanna Boot Camp, it has been under DOC control since the early nineties and is designed for "low-risk" inmates.
Officials say it currently houses 348 inmates and employs 234 staff members.
The DOC says it is also in need of upgrades, including to its security, with costs currently projected at over $5 million, but authorities say those costs are expected to increase to over $12 million within the next ten years."
