TOP USA - Pennsylvania Route 120

TOP USA
Pennsylvania Route 120 (PA 120) is a state highway spanning approximately 104 miles across north-central Pennsylvania, connecting Ridgway in Elk County to Lock Haven in Clinton County. Established in 1926 as U.S. Route 120, it was redesignated as PA 120 around 1967.

Route Overview:
 • Western Terminus: PA 120 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 219 in Ridgway, Elk County.
 • Eastern Terminus: The route concludes near Lock Haven, intersecting with U.S. Route 220.

Along its path, PA 120 traverses the scenic landscapes of Cameron and Clinton counties, closely following the Sinnemahoning Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River. This corridor is designated as the Bucktail State Park Natural Area, a 75-mile stretch named in honor of the Pennsylvania Bucktails Regiment from the Civil War era.

Historical Significance:
The highway traces its origins to the Sinnemahoning Path, an ancient Native American trail facilitating travel across the Allegheny Front, bridging the Susquehanna and Allegheny River watersheds. In the early 20th century, constructing this route was deemed a formidable challenge, with skeptics dubbing it “The Impossible Road.” Despite these doubts, construction commenced in October 1926, culminating in a vital transportation link that has endured for decades.

Scenic and Recreational Highlights:
Travelers on PA 120 can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds region. The Bucktail Trail Scenic Byway offers picturesque views of dense forests, rolling valleys, and diverse wildlife habitats. This route is particularly popular among outdoor enthusiasts seeking opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation
