George W. Cunningham

 

George W. Cunningham, Jr., 82, of Akron, NY, and formerly of St. Marys, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021, in Rochester, NY, after a lengthy illness.

He was born September 24, 1938, in St. Marys, son of the late George W. and Beatrice H. Macdonald Cunningham, Sr. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1958. George was a retired employee of Keystone Carbon Company, retiring after 42 years of service, and also a bus driver for the St. Marys School District. He had resided in St. Marys until moving to New York six years ago.

On October 8, 1960, in the Queen of the World Church, George married Martha Mary Herbstritt, who survives. Together they enjoyed 60 years of marriage.

George is also survived by his two daughters: Dianne (Drew) Klotzbach of Basom, NY and Connie (Christopher) Montana of Rochester, NY; two sons: Steven Cunningham of Boston, MA and Blaine (Sharon) Cunningham of Webster, NY; six grandchildren: Chad Klotzbach, Morgan (Craig) Wagner, Samuel Montana, Mason Montana, Sadie Cunningham, and Grace Cunningham; his daughter-in-law, Jill Cunningham of Emporium; his sister, Ann Bush of St. Marys; his brother, Donald (Carol) Cunningham of St. Marys; and by a sister-in-law, Carol Cunningham of St. Marys.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Cunningham on January 16, 2021; and by a brother, Merle Cunningham in December 1987.

George was a member of the Crystal Fire Department and a lifetime member of the St. Marys Quarterback Club. He was a coach for Knothole Baseball and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.


Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Saturday morning, from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Marys Area Quarterback Club, P.O. Box 841, St. Marys, PA 15857; the Indian Falls United Methodist Church (Respite Care), 7908 Alleghany Road, Corfu, NY 14036, or to St. Teresa of Avila Parish, 5771 Buell Street, Akron, NY 14001.
