Support 97-Year-Old Veteran James Haskins

Friends, we are reaching out today to see if anyone is interested in helping a 97-year-old WW2 veteran with his monthly housing expense.

Meet James Haskins!

James was born on January 22, 1928, in Emporium, Pennsylvania. Upon turning 18, he was drafted into the Army and served in Japan during World War II. James has lived in Emporium, Buffalo, NY, and Florida during his lifetime. After the death of his second wife, Barbara, he moved back to Emporium. He lived with his beloved sister Bev for 16 years before he became basically homeless at 97 due to the death of his sister, who passed away from lung cancer a week after his grandson also passed from cancer.

Bev had owned her own home and had expressed many times that she would like for him to continue living there after her passing. However, her POA and executor of her will felt otherwise and gave away Bev's home a week before her death. They changed the locks on the home and refused to give a key to Jim, making him afraid to leave to go to the store, fearing she would lock the door and he would not be able to return home. They further isolated him by shutting off his phone and television, removing the dog he loved beyond all words, "Joey," and told him he needed to "get out" ASAP. We are trying all legal means possible to rectify the situation; however, it is a slow process, and due to his remaining nieces doing their best to care for him, he decided to move into "Felt Living," a personal care facility located in Emporium.

Felt Living does not accept any type of medical assistance, and Jim is in great health and does not require enough medical assistance to be admitted and cared for in the "Manor." Jim is a sweetheart! Always happy and makes the most of life. He takes care of the "neighbors" (as he calls them) at the assisted care facility, visits the senior center across the street to make crafts, and visits with his remaining nieces and friends.

We are hoping to fund the difference between the cost of his stay each month, less his social security and pension, approximately $1,600.00 a month.

Any assistance or help of any kind would be greatly appreciated!

Re-establishing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Program

I have recently partnered with Hometown Mentors, Inc. to help re-establish Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in Cameron County, PA!
This program provides one book per month to children aged 0-5 years old at no cost to the family. Purchasing the books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program requires a local 501(c)3 to raise the funds for each child enrolled in their area.
Hometown Mentors, Inc has previously, and would like to resume, sponsoring children for this program in Cameron County.
This is where you can help!
The cost for this program is $2.60/month per child.
We are looking for anyone (person, organization, or business) interested in sponsoring a child for $31 per year. You can sponsor as many children as you would like!
Anyone who would like to donate to this program can make a check payable to “Hometown Mentors, Inc” with “Dolly” in the memo line. Payments can be mailed to Hometown Mentors Inc, c/o Emily Costanzo, 907 Sizerville Rd, Emporium, PA 15834.
Thank you for your consideration in helping us continue this wonderful program!

Flyers for this can also be picked up in the library foyer

Coyote Near Emporium

These photos aren't very clear, but the coyote caught me by surprise.
I had pulled off the road to take a photo of a rainbow, when I noticed the coyote running across the road in front of me carrying his prey. This was about 1/4-mile West on Rt 120 from town. This is about the 3rd time it has ran across the road in front of me in this area.

Elk Cam is Live

Elk Cam Fires Back Up!
With the September peak of Pennsylvania’s elk rut right around the corner, you can get a jumpstart on viewing some of those bugling bulls through the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Elk Cam.
The camera is located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s elk range, an area totaling over 220,000 acres including State Game Lands 311 and Elk State Forest.
Video and sound from the camera will be livestreamed, and viewers can expect not only to see elk, but turkeys, deer and other wildlife, as well. The best time to view elk on camera is late in the afternoon.
If you’d like to see the bugling season in person, the PA Game Commission reminds visitors to always be “Elk Smart.” Give elk space, never feed elk and do your part to ensure the welfare of the herd.
