All Fired Up & Kicking Ash BBQ Competition

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce will host the first ever barbecue competition in the county.  The event is set for Saturday September 27 and open to teams or individuals.  That is a jam packed weekend for Cameron County and the chamber is hoping it will provide another activity for visitors.   “The event coincides with Cameron County Homecoming, and the District 4 Trapping Convention,” said executive director Tina Johns Solak. 

Individuals or teams are invited to enter.  The price is $50.00.  Teams will set up in the vacant lot in downtown Emporium and offer their wings, pork, ribs, turkey or brisket for sale.  A team of 6 judges will decide the winners in each category.  Visitors will then select a People’s Choice winner. 

The competition is open to restaurants, non-profits who would like to put together a team, or individuals.  “It is for bragging rights of the county!” Johns Solak explained.  Groups that may not want to enter the competition are encouraged to sell beverages, and side dishes like baked beans and coleslaw.  Currently the chamber is working with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to obtain an event permit and feature adult beverages. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Guy and Mary Felt Auxiliary.

 Husband and wife artist team, Tanyia and Dan Wennin have created 150 coffee mugs to celebrate Emporium’s 150th birthday. The silver and black coffee mugs mimic the wooden nickels passed out to revelers in 1964. The rocket ship on one side remembers the role Sylvania played in putting a man in space.

 The mugs are hand numbered and limited to 150. 

 They can be seen and purchased at the Cameron County Artisan Center in Emporium. 

 The price is $15.00 each.

Bruce H. Brown

Bruce H. Brown, 53, of 5398 Sizerville Rd., Emporium, PA died at UPMC-Presbyterian Pittsburgh, PA Monday, August 11, 2014 morning. He was born September 2, 1960 in St. Marys, PA a son of the late Claude H. and Carolyn R. Crawford Brown. On September 8, 1984 in St. Mark Catholic Church he married Lisa Catalone Brown, who survives. 

Bruce graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1978. He had worked many years at GKN in Emporium. Bruce was currently serving, as he had for over 20 years, as Portage Township Supervisor. He was also currently serving on the board of directors for the Cameron County Ambulance Service and also the Turkey Track Hunting Club. Bruce was an avid hat collector and enjoyed hunting, camping and riding four wheelers.

" When I first found out that The Little Museum in Cameron County, Pennsylvania didn’t have an address, I started to question whether I should make the trip out to visit it. However, I’m glad I did. It might be called The Little Museum, but there is a lot of awesomeness contained inside its small confines.

 The Little Museum is the museum for the Cameron County Historical Society. Located in a Depression-era schoolhouse, one of only two of its style to still exist, the museum sits a few miles outside of the tiny county seat of Emporium, along a two-lane road that runs through some of the state’s most inaccessible wilderness areas.

From the outside, it’s the kind of place you would drive by without even thinking twice. However, to do so would be a major mistake for anyone who appreciates history. In many ways, The Little Museum isn’t that dissimilar to any of the county historical society museums in Pennsylvania. Much of the exhibit space features items of local interest or tools from local industries. However, one of those local industries is the electronics manufacturer Sylvania.

 Now one of the world’s most well-known electronics companies, Sylvania started in 1924 in nearby Emporium. Housed in the museum are many original electronics produced during Sylvania’s early years as well as some of the military equipment that they made during World War 2. One thing that I love about historical society museums is that they often give me ideas for future exploration, and the Little Museum was no exception.......""

Bee Program at Cameron County School Playground

On Tuesday, July 29th there will be a special presentation at the school playground. 

The program will be on honey bees and given by Ryan Magaro. Ryan is a local bee keeper who also happens to have a portable hive. Ryan will talk about bees and how they work and what uses they have to our life and environment. 

This is open to any kids at all playgrounds. 

This will take place at 11 am.

The 2014 tractor parade will be held Monday, August 4 at 5:00pm. This parade is the annual "kick off" of the Cameron County Fair.

The theme for the 2014 fair is "Treasure the Memories". This year's fair will be held August 3rd- 9th.

The Cameron County fair began in 1967 and continues to this day.

American Pickers Want to Pick Cameron County

“American Pickers” on History Channel is a program which explores the fascinating world of antique ‘picking’ The high profile show follows two of the most skilled pickers in the business ‘Mike Wolfe’ and ‘Frank Fritz’ as they embark on an epic road trip across the US.   In August the show will feature sites in Pennsylvania. Recently a director contacted the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office hoping to find some residents willing to be “picked”.  

The show offers a fascinating insight into what it’s like to be the men on the ground who are on the frontlines of the antique industry. The show follows the pickers in their truck as they go on a mission in search of America’s most fascinating and valuable antiques - treasures that have been long forgotten in junkyards and barns across the country. The team tracks down unique and interesting items from motorcycles, classic cars and bicycles to one-of-a-kind vintage memorabilia.

The series follows the highs and lows of the trade as our team gets their hands dirty in the search of weird and wonderful hidden treasures. The show examines how determination and amazing instincts drive the pickers to salvage the good junk from the bad junk. On the adventure our team meets fascinating characters along the way each with a story to tell about the history of their collection and their own lives. Mike and Frank bring the past to life and recycle America as they go. On the way, we explore how our pickers strike the ultimate deal and discover just what it takes to renovate and re-sell a newly found antique in a competitive market.

Sinnemahone 50K Sets Training Runs

Sinnemahone 50k is set for Saturday October 18.  In advance two training runs will be held.  Both organized runs will be held on Sundays.  On Sunday September 7, participants will run a portion of the  25k course.  Runners are asked to meet at the Buttonwood Motel & Restaurant at 1pm.  The training run will begin and end at the Buttonwood Motel & Restaurant.

The second training run begins at Whitehead Trail and continues to the Buttonwood Motel & Restaurant.  Participants will be transported from the Buttonwood Motel & Restaurant to Ridge Road.  That training is set for Sunday September 28 at 1pm.

Those portions of the course will be marked and open for individual training runs.  Registration is open until October 3 and can be done online at  https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=27680.  More information is available at the website www.sinnemahone.org.

Farmer Market Opens in Emporium Saturday

For the second summer in a row, Emporium will host a Farmers Market on Fourth Street.  The first vendor will set up Saturday, July 26 in the middle of Emporium.  Uhl’s 4 Star Farm will have items grown at their farm in Kersey.

The chamber of commerce invites others to set up in the same location. Last year Alpaca Creations sold hand knitted and handspun yarn.  “It is hoped that more vendors will take advantage of the prime downtown space offered by the owner of the vacant lot,” says executive director Tina Johns Solak.  There is no fee.

This once a week venture provides those holding farmer market vouchers a local place to redeem the certificates.  The farmers market will be open 9am-noon each Saturday as long as the vendors have items to sell.

Fall Flea Market Marks A Return

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce planning for the 2^nd annual Fall Flea Market.  It will be held the same weekend as the Sinnemahone 50k, on Saturday October 18. 

“Last year was the first time this event was held.  We wanted to provide an event for those that traveled with participants of the grueling race,” explained Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Solak.  “The race has a ten hour time limit, giving time for those supporting the participants’ time to browse.” 

The Fall Flea Market is open to anyone selling food, household items, or crafts, and not limited to Cameron County residents.  Vendors are assigned spots along Broad Street, Third and Fourth Streets.  To reserve a spot a $10.00 fee must be paid and vendors are assigned on a first come first serve basis.  Reservations are being taken at the chamber office at 34 East Fourth Street or by calling 814-486-4314.

Project Pearl Harbor Bingo

My name is Katie Caldwell, and for my senior project, I will be hosting a bingo to help with Project Pearl Harbor for the Cameron County band.

The cost to play bingo is $25 per person when you buy a pre-sale ticket.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Cameron County High School. She was a member of the Rich Valley Wesleyan Church for many years where she enjoyed volunteering and participating in church activities. She enjoyed playing cards with the ladies on Thursday evenings.

Josephine Bursic Kirn, 95, of Verona, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 3, 2014. Born April 16, 1919 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Crnkovic Bursic. On April 26, 1947, in St. Joseph Church, Verona, she married William M. Kirn who died July 7, 1993.

A resident of Verona most of her life, she was a 1938 graduate of Verona High School and the Pittsburgh Academy Business School in 1940. She was a homemaker but at various times was employed as a bookkeeper and/or sales representative by Verona News & Ice Cream Shop, Scaife’s Mfg., Hayes Appliances, Ritter Plumbing and Hornes Department Store. Mrs. Kirn was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church in Verona and was very involved with the local Slovenian & Croation Clubs, had many hobbies & interests like bowling, golfing, ceramics, and photography, and was a great Pittsburgh sports fan.

Survivors include: three daughters, Joyce (Barry) Scott of Connoquenessing, Shirley (Jim) Condon of Emporium, and Jane (John) Malek of Monroeville; three grandchildren, Amy (Dave) Bocci of Butler, Dr. Kim (Dr. Jim) Kelly of Lititz, and TJ Condon of Pittsburgh; four great grandchildren; and several generations of nieces & nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Bursic & Ante Bursic; and one sister, Angeline Hromyak.

Visitations with video tribute will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in the English Funeral Home, Oakmont. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, in St. Joseph Church, Verona, with Fr. Edwin Wichman, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Verona.

Ernest C. Russell

Ernest C. Russell, 75, of Manley Hot Springs, with his loving wife by his bedside, went home to be with the Lord on June 26, 2014, at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

 He was born on Sept. 26, 1938, to Carl A. and Edith Louise Dickinson Russell at the home of his grandparents, Ernest P. and Winnie Chandler Dickinson on Sizerville Road in Emporium, PA. He was married to Anna M. Snyder Russell on Nov. 4, 1972. They moved to Alaska in 1973 and lived there ever since. Ernest graduated from the Cameron County High School in Emporium, PA, in the class of 1957.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, step-mother, Hilda Russell, and sister, Carol (Russell) Perusich, of Wasilla. He is survived by his loving wife of more than 41 years; brother, Jim, and his companion, Karen, of Emporium, PA.; brother, Terry, and wife, Bea, of Manley Hot Springs, and a sister-in-law, Mary Vander Wall, of Phoenix, Arizona.

 He was a member of the Manley Baptist Fellowship in Manley Hot Springs. He was truly loved and will be greatly missed by his loved ones and friends.

 A graveside service will be held next week at the Newton Cemetery in Emporium at a date to be determined.

Max L. Lininger

Max L. Lininger, Jr., 54, of Bethlehem, Pa., died Friday, July 4, 2014, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem. Born February 14, 1960 in Lock Haven, he was the son of Max L., Sr., and Janet Campbell Lininger. He was a 1978 graduate of Cameron County High School and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford Campus.

He was formerly employed by Solveson Contracting of Emporium and Pesces Fabricating in St. Marys and later spent many years traveling for work from Florida to Alaska with Fleming Building Company. For the past several years he was a licensed crane operator with SmitHahn Company, Inc. of Bethlehem, Pa. Mr. Lininger was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Emporium and enjoyed coming back to Emporium during hunting season and for the holidays when he spent time setting up elaborate model train displays under the tree. He was an avid NASCAR fan and with his camper was able to visit many tracks around the country. He was also a member of the Protective Fraternal League of St. Marys. 

He is survived by: his mother, Janet Lininger of Emporium; one sister, Michele (Mike) Rodich of Emporium; a niece Mallory Rodich of Emporium; and two nephews, Matt Rodich of Emporium, and Daniel Earlywine of Washington, Pa.

In addition to his father, Max Lininger, Sr., he was predeceased by a sister, Martha Ellwood. 

Visitations will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2014 in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium where Funeral and Committal Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with Fr. Paul Siebert, pastor of St. Mark Church in Emporium, officiating.
