PA Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau is at Sizerville State Park.
Today we feature the new Wild Elk Gravel CROOKED COWELY ride.
Get a taste of Elk State Forest with this short but sweet all-gravel loop from Sizerville State Park.
If you’re staying in the park, it’s a perfect quick ride after spending some time in the car or before heading home. It’s also an approachable route for those newer to gravel riding, with relatively mellow grades.
The climb up Cowley Hill Road is long but gentle for most of its length, only becoming slightly steeper before the intersection with Ridge Road. Turn right and head south on Ridge Road, a section that is a bit sandy and more dirt than gravel. Rolling terrain brings you to the next intersection with Crooked Run Road. You can turn right and begin the descent immediately or take a quick ¼ mile detour to Salt Run Vista to take in the view. Benches and interpretive signs invite you to linger and refuel before turning around and heading back down to the park.
Near the bottom of Crooked Run Road, you’ll pass through an impressive grove of white pines, planted in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps to replace the massive tracts of old-growth forests logged at the turn of the 19th century.
Sizerville State Park is small but very scenic, featuring an intimate campground open from mid-April through mid-December and a variety of hiking trails including the Sizerville Nature Trail, a 3-mile loop with educational stops featuring the Eastern Hemlock, PA’s State Tree. There’s also a swimming pool open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and free to the public. Parking for cyclists is available at the snowmobile lot on East Cowley Run Road on the left just past the pool.
