Emporium Rotary Club
Rotarian Linda Reid introduced her grandson, Brian Reid, as her guest speaker.
Brian spoke about his radiation hobby which involves exploring, detecting, and collecting naturally or artificially radioactive materials and items often using a Geiger counter to find things like uranium glass (Vaseline glass), vintage radium watches, or thorium-containing mantles, appealing to science enthusiasts who enjoy hunting for "hidden" radiation sources and learning about nuclear science through hands-on observation. He uses the Geiger counter to find uranium-glazed ceramics, old radium dials, or even slightly elevated background radiation in granite or old buildings. Brain also warned of the potential dangers of some products being marketed as health or beauty products claiming that they are "negative ion" products, contain tourmaline, or that claim to block radiation/5G/Wi-Fi, which can contain trace amounts of radiation. Brian's presentation was very informative and well received with many questions asked by the members.
