The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced certain commercial motor vehicles traveling on Route 6 will be directed to detour between Port Allegany and Smethport during winter weather.
According to PennDOT, the detour will apply to commercial vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds.
It uses Routes 155, 446 and 46. I view this as a temporary strategy to improve safety and avoid lengthy delays for travelers on a major route through the area. I have talked with PennDOT about the need for improvements, such as passing lanes, to address safety concerns for the long term.
PennDOT is in the process of posting static signage and variable message boards along the detour route. Additionally, PennDOT will communicate this detour to the trucking industry via the DriveWyze app, a mobile tool for professional drivers that offers free safety alerts.
