Ronald James Kornish

Jim Kornish, 86, died October 30, 2023, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Born in 1937 in Homestead, PA, Jim was the oldest child of Ann Peters and Elmer Kornish. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandy Kornish; son Jim II (Laura) Kornish of Boulder, CO; daughter Kari (Patrick) Werner of Carlisle; grandsons Ted (Jenna) Kornish of San Francisco, CA; and Nathan Kornish of Manhattan, NY; sisters Carole O’Malley of Rochester, NY; Linda (James) Kronenwetter of Ontario, NY; and Kathy (Jeff) Bartsch of Warren, PA. Jim was raised in Emporium, PA.

Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from Alfred University where he studied Business Administration. While there he was active in Army ROTC, Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and played on the 1956 undefeated Saxon football team. His Army service took him to Bad Kreuznach, Germany, where he met his future wife at the Officer’s Club. They were married in Arlington, TX, in 1964, at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church. Jim loved working as a college admissions counselor at Alfred University, Dickinson College, and Texas Christian University because he was a people-person. He could engage anyone in conversation. Jim later sold insurance through the John Hancock and Baltimore Life companies. He loved traveling, family reunions, timing and officiating at swim meets for nearly 40 years, poker nights, pets, and connecting with friends. An avid Pittsburgh Pirate fan, he flew his Jolly Roger flag after each victory.

Full military honors will accompany Jim’s burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Monday, November 6th, at 2pm. If you wish to honor Jim, you may make a donation to Alfred University and designate Jim Kornish ‘61 Memorial Fund at 1 Saxon Drive, Alfred, NY 14802.

To the very end, after 31,508 days, laughter was the best medicine. He will be greatly missed.
