Sinnemahoning State Park Programs August 12th- August 14th

Stargazing and Solar Energy Programs This Weekend at Sinnemahoning State Park

Come to Sinnemahoning State Park this weekend to marvel at the night sky, make a planet craft, and learn about solar energy.

On the evening of Friday, August 12th, join the park naturalist for a Perseid Party from 9 PM to 11 PM. Try to catch a glimpse of the famous Perseid Meteor Shower. With bright meteors zooming in at about 1 per second, the Perseids are possibly the brightest and most famous meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere. With the recently full moon, meteors may be faint and hard to see. However, Saturn will still be putting on a show, at its closest and brightest of the year. We’ll have telescopes available to view Saturn’s rings and moons. Park in the gravel lot for the Wildlife Viewing Area. Walk down the Lowlands Trail about 100 feet to the Wildlife Viewing Area Field on the left.

On Saturday afternoon, August 13th, head down to the 40 Maples Day Use Area from 1 PM to 2 PM to learn about Solar Energy, and try your hand at harnessing the power of the sun. Discover how energy from the sun can create electricity that can be used in everyday activities. Fun, hands-on activities best for ages 11 to adult. Younger children welcome with adult supervision. Some activities are weather dependent.

Bring your crafty kids to Night Sky Craft from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Campground Amphitheater. Kids will create a fun night sky scene to take home using paper, paint, and shaving cream. Best for ages 4 and up, older and younger siblings welcome. All materials provided, craft will use washable paint. This program is open to all visitors, even those not staying in the campground.

Later on Saturday evening, come back to the Campground Amphitheater learn about the night sky with August Skies of Sinnemahoning from 7:00 to 7:45 PM. Learn about the constellations, planets, and other astronomical sightings visible in August. This program includes tips on watching the Perseid meteor shower. All ages. This program is open to all visitors, even those not staying in the campground.

Seats are available on all Sunday, August 14th Pontoon Tours of the Stevenson Dam.
Tour times are 9:00 AM – 10:15 AM, 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM, and 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM.
