Weekend in the Wilds Results

Weekend in the Wilds brought street filled crowds to Emporium on Saturday. The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce estimates more than $10,000 was spent during the weekend. Non-profit organizations, restaurants and artists reported brisk sales during Saturday which drew at least one thousand people to the event. Live music was provided by The Grey Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, The Community Band and country band, Full Moon.

One of the biggest events was the Big Foot Hunt sponsored by Mountaineer Search and Rescue. Nearly 30 hunters took to the county trails and roads looking for the twelve big foots which were hid throughout the county and nine were found. The winning hunters included Wendy Davis, Jonathan Good, Justin Zimmer, McKenzie Maggaro, Deb George, Josh Dixon, Shey Chmelar, Christie Slottje, and Eric Shupe.

The car/truck/bike show drew nearly 70 vehicles. Vehicle owners from Emporium joined owners from as far away as New York. The winners included Anne Johnson, Bike Belsole, Den Anderson, Norm and Jane Smith, Joan Freer, John Bisker, Jim Ewing, Ernie Oldani, Ken Schaeffer, Chuck Kepler, Harlan Smith, Paul carson, Donna Wilson, Ben and Beckie VanSickles, Bob Levia, Mark Hoffman, Phil Heasley, David and Dee Tanano, Ken Harman, Mike Baumgratz, Chuck Hutwagner, Pam Irwin, Chester and Marilyn Sheets, Tom Bell, Ivan Freer, Chris Stanko, Leroy Laird, Andy Hoy, Thomas Skiver, Betty Vogel, Kenny McKervey, Carl Hanes, Richard Spouse, Wayne Rigard and Bob Rodich. The Bikes Best of Show winner was Jeff Martin (1998 Harley Softail) from Roulette. Randy Clark from Bradford took home the Truck Best of Show with his 1957 Chevy 3100. Car Best of Show was awarded to Bill Pfaff (1932 Ford Coupe) from St Marys. This year children voted for their favorite. The winner was Ken Anderson from St Marys with a 2007 Mustang GT 500.

Nearly 300 people voted in the Cameron County Best Wings Contest. For the second year in a row, Weebulls in Driftwood was voted number 1.

Cameron County Sesquicentennial Parade

Cameron County Sesquicentennial Parade will step off at noon on Saturday September 4
. It will highlight a patriotic theme noting all the men and women from the county that have served in every war since the Bucktails floated to Harrisburg to serve during the Revolutionary War. The Grand Marshall of the parade will be 93 year old Andrew Richnafsky who served in World War II.

Richnafsky’s heroism during the war is well documented. While serving in Czechoslovakia, a fellow soldier was hit by shrapnel from an artillery shell. Richnafsky picked up the man and began carrying him, but before he could get very far, Richnafsky also was wounded twice. That did not stop the Cameron County native from continuing 300 yards to safety. The man Richnafsky saved, lost his eyesight, and lived a productive life. In fact he was named in the 1970’s as the Handicap Person of the Year.

Richnafsky will be joined by the oldest resident of Cameron County. 105 year old C.W. Hudson has been invited to ride in the parade! The oldest woman, 100 year old Ruth Laughlin is unable to participate.

Parade day excitement begins at 9 in the morning when the Cameron County Little League Complex will morph into balloon heaven. Four patriotic themed helium filled balloons will be blown up at the facility. Most of the 80 plus units scheduled to march in the parade will gather on Route 155 just outside of Emporium. At noon the parade will march from the caboose on Route 120 to Woodland Avenue in Emporium.

A viewing stand will be located on Fourth Street in front of the Northern Tier Community Action facility. At the stand, the winners of first and second place trophies plus the Commissioners and Emporium Foundation trophies will be announced. Local radio station WLEM/WQKY will broadcast the parade live from the viewing stand.

During the parade, various vendors will be selling food and parade balloons. The Cameron County Fair Association will sell funnel cakes, deep fried Oreos and water, while the First Presbyterian Church of Emporium will offer walking ice cream sundaes. Following the parade, the Cameron County Quilters will raffle off a quilt. Cameron County Community Chest will plunge the ducks into the water from the Broad Street Bridge at 2:30 following the parade. The finish line is on Front Street near the Gazebo.

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson says, “the event is full of fun for the entire family”. The parade should last about 90 minutes. “It has been wonderful to see the support of the community from municipal officials, small business owners and groups and organizations.”

Bucktail Re-Union August 27-29

The Bucktail Re-Union Returns to Emporium for the Sesquicentennial

The public is encouraged to come to the fairgrounds starting Friday night at 8 when stories will be shared around a campfire. On Saturday the camp will open at 10 in the morning and various displays will be on display. At noon the Bucktails will eat a camp lunch and 4:30 a photograph using Civil War era methods will be taken. A dinner will be served at 6 PM.

Sunday the Bucktails will host a wreath laying ceremony at the Newton Cemetery at the grave site of Lt. R.B. Warner of Company “C”.

Organizers expect at 30 Bucktails and family members to attend the Re-Union. If you would like more information contact Chuck Copello at 814-389-5405.

Big Band Era Dance August 27-29

Cameron County Honors the Big Band Era

NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK

As we have breezed by Memorial Day and are now in June we see neighbors hanging flowering baskets, landscaping their yards and starting vegetable gardens. The growing season has officially begun.

As you travel through the downtown area you’ll see that the Emporium Garden Club has been busy filling the flower containers on 4th Street and beautifying the Brown Memorial Library as well as the Veterans’ Memorial Park located at Rt 120 and Airport Road. We also landscape at the Grove House, the Post Office, the Mini Park, the Cameron County Health Care Center, the triangle located at the intersections of Rt 120 and Rt 155 along with the atrium at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor.

In honor of National Garden Week the Emporium Garden Club members would like to invite you to a “Get to Know Us” in the conference room at the Brown Memorial Library from 1-3PM on June 10th. There will be light refreshments along with flower arranging demonstrations. We will also have 50 years of history to share with the community as we are celebrating being in existence for 50 years. Come and enjoy and maybe we have something to offer or inspire you to become a member.
We are planning a flower show this December in conjunction with “Weekend in the Wilds” in December so be watching for more details in the future.
On your way to the library be sure to check out the windows of the Christmas Store. Several members and friends have turned them into a gardening wonderland.
