Leo Hanes

Leo Hanes, 82, of Emporium, passed away Saturday (Sept. 16, 2023).

Leo was born Nov. 27, 1940, in St. Mary's, and was the son of Veronica and Warren Waddington.

He was a 1958 graduate of Cameron County High School and served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a graduate of DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, Ill., where he met his loving wife, Marie Therese McShane. He finished his education in electrical engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.

Leo and Marie had two daughters, Terri and Jules. Their family lived in Henrietta, N.Y., where Leo was an electrical engineer at Xerox from 1964-1999.

He spent his retirement in Emporium, spending many of those years caring for his mother, Veronica Waddington. Leo spent much of his time outdoors enjoying the Pennsylvania mountains, playing golf and cheering for Penn State Football. He loved his grandsons, Kevin and Jake Connell and enjoyed spending time golfing with them at various locations, but especially at Emporium County Club, where he was a long-time member.

Leo is survived by his daughters, Terri (Don) Bavis and Jules (Clint) Cummings; his grandsons, Kevin (Vivian Becker) Connell and Jake (Sarah Gensler) Connell; step-granddaughters, Stephanie Cummings and Megan Bavis; and step-grandson, Kellen Bavis. He is also survived by his beloved aunts, MaryLou Wiesner of St. Mary's and Sal (Scotty) Distler of Scottsdale, Ariz., Charlene Malfer of Weedville; and many cousins and friends. He is also survived by wife, Ethel Dolloway-Fritz-Hanes, and her daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren H. and Veronica L. Waddington; beloved aunts and uncles, Agnes Malfer, Dorothy Duncan, Ray Kostecki, Joe Kostecki and Francis Kostecki; and his life-long, dear friend, Tom Andrews.

There are no calling hours. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mark's Church is being planned for a future date. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Emporium Country Club or the Cameron County Sports Football, Basketball or Baseball Boosters in Leo's name.
