Farmers Market Welcomes Josh Zucal

Cameron County Farmers Market

Today’s vendor needs no introduction, a familiar face and the inspiration behind the market, Josh Zucal!

Josh has been involved in promoting sustainable agriculture in Cameron County in various ways for many years and had long dreamed of bringing a farmers market to the area. He is a passionate gardener himself and previously ran a CSI (community supported agriculture), along with Alex Reed, which supplied a weekly bounty of fresh produce to locals for several years.

In his role as Marketing Director for Cameron County he continues to work towards his goal of reducing carbon footprints by creating an internal supply chain, encouraging consumers to buy local and promoting sustainability.

This year his many other demands have limited his time in the garden but instead he is bringing to the market his own line of roasted coffee beans, Bearded Brewing. He purchases his beans through an importer that supports fair trade and buys directly from small-scale farmers in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Ethiopia and Indonesia. He roasts the coffee beans himself so that you are buying the freshest roasted coffee possible. In his own words:” Fresh roasted coffee allows the natural flavor of the bean to be recognized. If not brewed within 6 weeks a lot of the flavor of the area is lost in the bean making it taste like regular coffee like Maxwell or Folgers. Capturing the flavor of the origin is what makes coffee roasting an art, just like a fine wine would.”

It has been a real pleasure working together with Josh to bring the farmers market back to Cameron County and I am continually impressed with all the great ideas that he has and all that he is doing to make this community better!
Thank you for all that you do, Josh!
