Great Backyard Bird Count this week at Sinnemahoning

This week, Sinnemahoning State Park will offer two programs for bird watchers to learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count. The Great Backyard Bird Count, which will be held February 18-21, 2022, is an annual worldwide event where amateur birders have the opportunity to contribute to scientists' understanding of birds and their habitats by spending 15 minutes or more watching birds.

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online community science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time.

For those participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count for the first time, Sinnemahoning State Park is offering a virtual online program, The Great Backyard Bird Count: Guide for First Timers, on Tuesday, February 15, at 2:00 PM, and again on Thursday, February 17, at 12:00 PM. This "virtual" online program will cover a description of the Great Backyard Bird Count, how to participate, tips to identifying backyard birds, and instructions on how to submit your data online. Pre-registration is required. To register, please visit please visit the DCNR Calendar of Events at https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/sinnemahoning_state_park/calendar.

Those ready to practice their bird identification skills are welcome to join park staff and other bird watching enthusiasts for a Great Backyard Bird Count Walk, on Saturday, February 19, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Meet at Pavilion 1 in the 40 Maples Day Use Area of Sinnemahoning State Park to search for winter birds in woodland, meadow, and wetlands of the First Fork Valley while participating in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Hike will be 2-3 miles over mostly level terrain. Snowshoes will be provided if needed. Novice and experienced birders welcome! No pre-registration required for the walk.

For more information or if you need assistance with online registration, please contact the park office at 814-647-8401 or SinnemahoningSP@pa.gov.
