That Natural Store
On our ride to Kane yesterday we stopped into the Keystoned Cafe and Natural Shoppe. Erin Vassallo, store owner and Cameron County native, greeted us as we browsed her store. Erin, thanks for showing us around - we loved your products and the store!! It was great to see Rich Valley Apiary & Bearded Brewing items from Emporium for sale in your shop. Visiting with Grant was an added bonus. We will definitely be back!

This week Sinnemahoning State Park is offering three different ways to enjoy the George B. Stevenson reservoir, with fishing, kayaking, and pontoon boat tours, plus a Saturday evening program featuring rattlesnakes.
Fishing Skills on the Lake, Thursday, August 8, 12:00 PM-2:00 PM. Brush up on your fishing skills aboard the pontoon boat while learning about the various fish habitats of the lake. No license required. Tackle and bait provided. Group size limited. Pre-registration required by Wednesday, August 7. Lake Day Use Area.
Kayak Games, Saturday, August 10, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Learn basic water safety and paddling techniques while enjoying games and activities to improve kayak skills. All equipment provided. Emporium Graduate Designing Triple Crown Logos
Sinnemahone Triple Crown has new logos thanks to the design work by Catalpha Design from Baltimore Maryland. “Don Keller was introduced to the chamber through Alan Ramsey at Embassy Powdered Metals,” says Tina Solak, executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce. Keller’s team not only designed the Triple Crown logo, but also logos for each of the races plus a rack card highlighting only the gravel road race.
The Sinnemahone Triple Crown includes paddling, biking and trail running, but participants do not have to compete in each event. The next event sponsored by Embassy Powdered Metal is the 55 mile gravel road bike race set for Saturday September 28. Competitors will leave from Emporium and return to Emporium after traveling to Sinnemahoning State Park utilizing trails and gravel roads through the Elk State Forest. Competitors will then be treated to food at the All Fired Up Kickin Ash BBQ Competition taking place on the same day in downtown Emporium.

Looking for Groups to Utilize Stage in Emporium
A portable stage located this summer in downtown Emporium continues to sit empty. The owner of the vacant lot, Karl Gecci has allowed the stage to remain in its present location since Weekend in the Wilds. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce officials had hoped church groups, musicians, performers would take advantage and offer free events this summer.
The stage donated by the borough of Emporium can be pulled to different locations in the county. “It is hoped that organizers in Driftwood or Sinnemahoning will utilize the stage and host an event or two,” says Tina Solak, executive director of the chamber. The stage will remain available through the end of September when it will host entertainment for the All Fired Up Kickin Ash BBQ Contest.
Anyone wishing to utilize the stage for free is asked to contact the chamber office.

Private landowners with at least one-acre of land who are interested in long-term conservation of pollinators are encouraged to be part of Project Wingspan.
If your land is chosen, a pollinator habitat coordinator will visit your site, free of charge, to evaluate your habitat landscape and offer habitat development guidance. Plant material awards will be given to selected sites for habitat enhancement.

Harry Joseph Fromell
Harry Joseph Fromell, 91, resident of the Woods at Cedar Run, Camp Hill, PA, and formerly of Altoona, PA, died Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Encompass Health, Mechanicsburg.
He retired as an electrical engineer for Sylvania Electronics, Emporium and Altoona; a graduate of La Salle Institute and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, both of Troy, NY; attended St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland; former tax preparer volunteer for seniors; a catechism teacher at his former church in Emporium; loved to bowl, golf, go on cruises and fish at the lake house. Born in Colonie, NY, on June 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Harry H. and Anna (Barno) Fromell. Harry was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl A. Fromell.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Margaret (Davis) Fromell; two sons and their wives, David J. and Laurie T. Fromell of Lemoyne, and Gregg J. Fromell and Beth Rezet of Havertown; a daughter, Kathy J. Fromell of Cincinnati, OH; five grandchildren, Jamie and Karen Nesbitt, Maddie and Nick Fromell, Hope Soulier; a great grandson, Charles Gittleman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30AM Friday, July 26, in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, with the Rev. Samuel Dubois as celebrant. Private entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Altoona. There will not be a public viewing or visitation.

Emporium Senior Center will be holding their official Grand Opening at their new location on Friday, August 2nd from 3pm-5pm. The Grand Opening provides a fun and festive occasion to come see the new building, to celebrate this opportunity for our community, and to help thank the people that made all of this possible! The Grand Opening plans to include light refreshments, giveaway drawings, and a Chinese Auction and should be a fun time for all.

Mary Schimp, PA-C Accepting New Patients
Upper Allegheny Medical Center is pleased to announce that Mary Schimp, PA-C,is accepting family practice patients and walk in appointments such as colds, ear infections etc.
Since January 2nd, 2018, Mary has been seeing patients along with Dr. Mark Shelley, located at 1 Willow St. in Port Allegany.
Mrs. Schimp, a native of the area, received both her bachelor’s degree and her master’s in physician assistant science from Gannon University.
While there, she was on the dean’s list eight semesters. Mrs. Schimp worked for two years in occupational health at Hanover Works. She worked with local employers to keep their staff members healthy and provided services including treating work-related injuries and physical exams. During that time, she also worked for Hanover Medical Group’s Express Care. Mary was also employed by the Olean General Hospital and worked in emergency care. This experience has given Mrs. Schimp a broad knowledge of the critical care environment. Mary was employed by Penn Highlands Elk QCare in Emporium, where she served a patient population of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics in a walk-in setting. She managed illnesses and provided injections, wound care, splitting, suturing and gynecologic exams.

Sinnemahone Gravel Race
Sinnemahone Gravel Race sponsored by Embassy Powdered Metals is a 55 mile timed race/ride with 5000 feet of climbing starting and finishing on West Creek Recreational Trail. The route includes 2 trail sections, improved gravel roads, 1 seasonally maintained road, 2 short paved sections, and the best mountain scenery in Pennsylvania. The course is largely within the Elk State Forest and travels through Sinnemahoning State Park and southern Potter County.

For those who are not on the gravel biking scene or into bicycling at all and are wondering what a gravel bike and gravel biking is, here is a brief explanation. We have been gravel biking here for decades given the significant miles of dirt roads we have - we just didn't call it that as we were riding mountain bikes. Gravel biking as it is known now is a response to deteriorating paved road conditions everywhere and the desire to ride on safer roads. Gravel courses are typically long and combine dirt roads, secondary roads, and short sections of trails and pavement. Gravel bikes as such came about 5 years ago or so and are essentially endurance road bikes with clearance for greater width tires to handle off pavement conditions. Go to a gravel race and while you will see mostly gravel bikes as they are perhaps the most well rounded option, you will see all types of bikes - full suspension mountain bikes, hardtail mountain bikes, drop bar mountain bikes, fat bikes, maybe even the occasional road bike. At some point in a gravel race/ride, one of those options will be the best; and at another point it may be the worst. It is a sport with no attitude where the experience of the ride is the prize. The Sinnemahone Gravel course is just one of an endless combination of dirt roads in this region. The best way to experience riding here is to pick up a DCNR Elk or Susquehannock State Forest Map and start riding. Don't wait until this event to come here to ride.

Author and area native, Amy Case will be stopping by the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library on Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to chat with area residents and sign copies of her latest release, “Enduring Strength”.
In this Christian Romance, Lyddie Fisher and her family have broken away from their Amish Faith; however, does Lyddie have the strength to endure living among the English? She has found it hard to separate herself from her old life and her Amish friends. Now married to Blake Talbert, an English law enforcement officer, she feels she has it all. Life is good. That is until she sees her husband in the arms of another woman. Divorce among the Amish is unheard of, but Lyddie is no longer Amish, and she fears divorce is imminent. Calvin James Lane, III
On July 24, 2019 Calvin James Lane III entered in to eternal rest. Calvin was born and raised in Sterling Run, PA and recently moved to Dubois with his wife Jackie ( Guido) Lane. The son of Calvin James Lane (deceased) and Kathleen Marie (O'Brien) Lane was born in St. Marys on
October 4,1972.
Calvin had two sisters Anne Lane Conner (Chuck Conner) and Cindy Lane Eckenroad ( Scott Stover), 3 sons, Brady, Nathan and Joshua from this area, 2 stepsons Jaxon and Dakota who lived in Dubois. He also had a son Michael who preceded him in death and a brother Calvin James Lane, Jr. who died in infancy. Calvin was the grandfather to Aubrie Burkett who lives in Northeast, PA.
Mr. Lane was a graduate of Cameron County High School. Calvin was employed as a die setter most of his adult life. Family will remember that Calvin was a great cook, a hunter and fisherman. His favorite past time was spending time with his sons and family. Calvin enjoyed spending countless hours with his many nephews and nieces and was always the go to guy when they needed advice, a hug or just a smile. Calvin will be missed by his numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held July 31st at Calvin's homestead, 19 Backroad, Driftwood
( Sterling Run). PA.
Andrew Conner will officiate his uncle's service. Friends will be received at 1 PM until the time of service at 2 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the family to defray the cost of funeral expenses.

Hometown Mentors, Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients for its biennial Cameron County Sports Hall of Fame. This year, there are two inductees. First is the long-time head coach of the Cameron County Football Team, Coach John Fragale. Coach Fragale grew up in Emporium, Pennsylvania and graduated from Cameron County High School in 1966. He served as the Head Coach for the 1999 Raider squad. He coached the Red Raiders for over 35 of years, until his retirement in 2012. In the course of his tenure coaching, Coach Fragale mentored hundreds of young men both on the field and off field, which earned him the nick-name of ‘Papa John.’
HMI will also induct the 1999 Red Raider Football Team. The 1999 Football Team is among the most successful sports teams in Cameron County High School history. The team notably achieved a 12-1 record, becoming both the Allegheny Mountain League and District Nine champions in the process. Some of the most memorable games during the 1999 historic season were the long-awaited twin victories over the rival Smethport Hubbers during the regular season and in the AML Championship Game, the record-setting 72-6 victory over the Ridgway Elkers, and the miraculous final drive and victory over the Sharpsville Blue Devils, which launched the Red Raiders to the final eight in the PIAA Class A playoffs. The 1999 Red Raider season ended with heartbreaking double overtime loss against the Bishop Carroll Huskies.
The 1999 Team and Coach Fragale will be honored in a ceremony held at the Cameron County High School Auditorium on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 5 p.m. All are encouraged to attend this event, and there is no admission fee. Any attendee desiring to donate to HMI will be able to do so at the ceremony. Questions about this event may be directed to Annette Campbell, Hall of Fame Project Manager and Joe Malizia, HMI President.

Some of you may ask, what is Hometown Mentors?
Below is a short description and further information can be found by visiting their website at
"The founder of HMI saw real needs in her rural, Pennsylvania, hometown of Emporium for help in making day to day life just a little more pleasant and she felt that there must be more former residents who want to find a way to give back to the place they call “Home”. She couldn’t be the only one.
During the initial research on how, exactly, to help bring money, experience and encouragement back home, she found that one way would be to have a nonprofit with an IRS tax exempt status of 501(c)3. Many can affirm that not much can be done, in the form of getting grants and major gifts, without having this status. So, she went to work to form a nonprofit corporation that would help the people still living in her hometown to be encouraged to move happily into the future.
With the enthusiastic help of a handful of volunteers who share her passion and love of Emporium, PA, Hometown Mentors was created. The status of “nonprofit charity” was certified by the IRS on December 8, 2011.
Over the next few years, the theory was proved and many worthwhile projects, private donations and grants gave encouragement back home. This volunteer corporation began to show Emporium, PA that she was not alone and the future would include all of us together.
Through the help of social media, former residents from all over the world raised their hands saying, I want to help. Working together with the resident mentors, these former residents give personal donations. Local agencies and foundations, along with state and national corporations give grants and HMI continues to work together with all the stakeholders in Emporium to prove this theory.

The point is, that working together all of us can give back, pay it forward and make a difference in our hometown. A capitol building project is enthusiastically being studied to begin in 2018."

Rotarian & Senior Extension Educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension, Robin Kuleck, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting July 23rd educating the club on the invasive
spotted lanternfly.
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect from Asia currently found in southeastern Pennsylvania, and sightings have been reported in some neighboring states. The pest threatens important agricultural commodities, including the grape, hardwood, tree fruit, landscape and nursery industries - sectors that contribute nearly $18 billion annual to Pennsylvania’s economy.
This planthopper weakens plants by feeding on sap. It excretes a sticky, sugary substance called honeydew which attracts stinging insects, promotes the growth of sooty mold, and causes a messy nuisance for residents.
To help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly, the state has issued a quarantine order requiring the inspection of all items moving within or out of the area to prevent the transport of any living life state of the pest.

You can help keep mosquitos at bay by planting these types if plants:

Bee balms -- wild bergamot, purple bergamot, oswego-tea
Ageratums -- mistflower, wild ageratum
Sages -- lyre-leaved sage, lance-leaved sage
Alliums -- wild onion, nodding onion, wild leek
To activate the repelling powers of these plants, be sure to crush or bruise some the leaves to release the oils before heading out to enjoy the outdoors.

Rotary News
Rotarian, Bonnie Smith, presented the Mountain Melodies entertainment at the Rotary luncheon meeting July 23rd. They play once a month at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor and Aroma café along with community events throughout the year. All performances are free, but donations are accepted towards the Gladys Schultz Memorial Scholarship Fund. Also performing some tunes were members of the First United Methodist Church Bell Choir.

It will be taught at the Community Education Center in St. Marys and will be offered via live videoconference at the Education Council’s Coudersport office. The cost is $20 per person. Rita T. Catalano, 89, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of 130 Sunrise Acres, Emporium, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA Friday afternoon. (July 19, 2019) She was born April 2, 1930 a daughter to the late George and Anna Glasl Hornung On July 16, 1950 in St. Mark Catholic Church she married the late Romie Catalano who died September 17, 2015.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Catalano, Emporium; Jeffery Catalano, Clearfield; two daughters, Susan Catalano, Elizabethtown; Nancy Catalano Dill (Tim McGinnis), Emporium; five grandchildren: Angela, Israel, Anthony, Patrick & Duncan; three great grandchildren: Max, Jenna and Taylor, one brother, John Hornung, Huntingdon, PA; two sister-in-laws, Mary Catalano, Buffalo, NY and Julie Kinzel, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by seven sisters, Catherine Caldwell, Clara Burgoon, Anna Myers, Pauline Malone, Alice Gutgsell, Betty Heary & Mary Lewis, four brothers, George, Simon, Max and Harold Hornung,
There will be No Visitation.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (July 22, 2019) at 10:30 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA

GKN Emporium Employees Raise Funds for Cameron County Fireworks
A generous donation made by the GKN employees at the Emporium plant kicks of fundraising for the 2020 Cameron County Fireworks to be held Friday, July 3, 2020. The employees raise funds through the Hearts of Gold campaign.
Since July 4 falls on a Saturday in 2020, the fireworks will be held one day early to accommodate the schedule by the pyrotechnicians. The committee wants to thank the businesses, individuals, and volunteers who aided in this years success. The fireworks show continues to grow each year.

Emporium Senior Center’s Grand Opening!
Emporium Senior Center will be holding their official Grand Opening at their new location on Friday, August 2nd from 3pm-5pm.
The Grand Opening provides a fun and festive occasion to come see the new building, to celebrate this opportunity for our community, and to help thank the people that made all of this possible!
The Grand Opening plans to include light refreshments, giveaway drawings, and a Chinese Auction and should be a fun time for all.

Source to Tap Library Program
Do you wonder where our water comes from? Do you know how the water makes it into our faucets?
Well, here’s your chance to learn all about our local water sources.
The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is pleased to welcome Brian Budjanec from Sizerville State Park for a children’s program “Source to Tap” on Monday, July 29 from 1-2 p.m.
The fun and educational program is geared towards area youth ages 4-12.
Participants will spend a fun-filled afternoon with Budjanec, learning how our water is carried from nature to their spigot. Afterwards, they will make a rain stick for every participant to take with them.
No sign up is needed, but attendees should wear sneakers or comfortable shoes, and bring their curiosity and positive attitudes!
