Honor Our Own this Memorial Week-end at the Little Museum in Sterling Run

Honor Our Own this Memorial Weekend at the Little Museum in Sterling Run

The Little Museums officially opens this Saturday May 23. Our hours are from 1-4 PM Wed, Sat, and Sun or by appointment.

Something many do not know is that our county has an amazing military history dating as far back as the Revolutionary hero's who came here as our counties first pioneers.

The Museum itself is packed full of Cameron Counties military history worth seeing. As we honor our 250th Anniversary of our nation you need to come for a visit to our amazing "Military Room." The room itself was added on in the 70's by our own veterans to honor Emporium's native son Four Star General Joseph McNarney who was listed among those as "The Class the Stars Fell On" at West Point. In 1915 McNarney was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Infantry, and achieved four star general in 1945 holding a top post during WWII. After his death by his request his entire military collection of rare metals, uniforms, side arms, decorations, citations and so much more was donated to Cameron County Historical Society in 1972. It's a remarkable collection to see even for a brief visit while paying homage to our local hero's.

Upon entrance to the room you immediately walk on a Cameron County flagstone that was quarried from Sinnemahoning. This stone came from the same quarry for the walks used for the construction of the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" at Arlington Cemetery and many other government buildings in Washington DC and throughout the country.

The room contains so much more in regards to our local hero's that include the Bucktails of the Civil War, WWI, and WWII displaying memorabilia, artifacts and photos and so much more. Then there is the display of Sylvania's Exclusive Proximity Fuse that helped win the Battle of the Bulge and win the war itself. It was actually constructed at our Emporium Plant along with a huge collection of Sylvania products is beyond your imagination. Did you know we were once the dynamite capital of the world dating back to 1889? Come visit the historic artifacts that remain of its history when we were one of the top major suppliers of dynamite to Europe during WWI and furnished close to 90% of the dynamite to build the Panama Canal.

While at the Museum you will see we house so much more than just military for you, your friends and family to see of other interests. Before you leave you might want to check out our "Liberty Tree" that was planted in 2025 by the Pennsylvania Freemasons. It is a symbol of the trees that served as rally points for the Sons of Liberty, staging grounds for protests against the British taxation and legendry sits and where General Washington took command. Our tree is a clone of the historic 400 year old tulip poplar that once stood in Annapolis, Maryland that served as a rally point as well.

Come visit and learn about our counties military history this season at the Little Museum 1-4 PM Wed, Sat, Sun, and by appointment. You can contact us by calling: 814-486-0334 or e-mail us at: historycenter1@windstream.net. We guarantee it's well worth a trip.
