Cameron County Community Chest 2025 Fund Drive – April Update

Cameron County Community Chest 2025 Fund Drive – April Update

We are almost there!! Through April 14th we have collected $15,932 toward our $16,600 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2025.
Each month we feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month’s feature will be the Cameron County Recreation Center.

Cameron County Recreation Center provides many different services to the local community. It is the mission of the recreation department to provide quality spaces, equipment, and opportunities for recreation to the residents of Cameron County. In doing so we hope to encourage healthy, educational, and constructive outlets to all members of the community, especially our youth. The Recreation center aims to provide recreation for all people both within and outside of Cameron County.

The game room is open to members (ages 8-18) throughout the week and offers a variety of table games and electronic gaming. The Membership cost is $10.00 for one year. Currently, Recreation has teamed up with Barbra Moscato Brown Memorial Library. All new game room members with a valid BMBML card can get a discount on their game room membership for the 2025 year. In return valid game room members can receive a discount on Swag products at BMBML. The game room may be reserved for private use and there are other rooms available for meetings and parties, all at a minimal fee. Tables and chairs can be used (when available) as well as outdoor party games. There is no charge for use by non-profit organizations. Locals hold regular fitness classes, and other public events are sometimes held at the center, often in coordination with community partnerships. Please contact the center for more information, visit camcorecreation.redesk.com, or check them out on Facebook at Cameron County Recreation Center.

The Recreation Center hopes to continue to collaborate with the 4-H program to provide out of school programs for youth ages 8-18 as well as summer 4-H programs. Summer participants are able to enjoy time at the South Park and Third Street Playground. The playgrounds are supervised; participants are given the opportunity to participate in many collaborated activities including presentations from many community organizations, trips to Sinnemahoning State Park and the Elk Viewing Center, programs at Sizerville State Park, arts and crafts, STEM activities, and lots of other fun programs. The goal is to provide as many fun and educational programs as possible. Cameron County Recreation is also responsible for organizing the girl’s and boy’s 4 th through 6 th grade elementary basketball program. The County has also been working with the Center to help revitalize the old landfill on May Hollow Road. The land will be utilized as a dark skies and wildlife viewing area. Cameron County Recreations goal is to promote educational and healthy activities for people of all ages in a safe environment.

Cameron County Recreation Center is funded by the County, Emporium Foundation, and the Community Chest. The 4-H and summer programs are funded entirely by grants from the Emporium Foundation. For questions about any of the programs that are provided please contact the Recreation Director, Dannielle Mason by phone (814) 486-9378 or by e-mail at camcorecreation@gmail.com.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contributions to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA 15834 Attn: Judd Schager. Help to support the Recreation Center, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team, Garden Club, and Special Community Requests.

Sinnemahone Paddle Draws 79 Competitors

Mother nature cooperated bringing water to the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek. Last year the race was cancelled due to high water. All racers registered in 2024 were deferred to this years event which took place April 12. Emergency responders reporting everyone who started finished. A few reported rolling kayaks or canoes but finishing within 2 and a half hours.

The top finisher in the race was Russel Haines in the Canoe Racing division. Haines from Corsica finished the 12 mile race in 1:35:35. The top female competitor was Edna Spang from Gibsonia who finished the kayak long race 1:40:12. For the first time in recent years there were 2 competitors in the junior divisions. The youngest, 12 year old Ruth Anne Kane from Cameron County finished the race in 2:17:20. 15 year old Alan McCracken from Clearfield cleared the race in 1:40:41. McCracken has qualified for the US Nationals this summer.

The division named for one of the founders of the event, Bob Umbenhauer features a traveling trophy. This year the winning team traveled from Ohio. Ed Leszek and Joe White finished the course in 1:41:27.
Several teams with connections to Cameron County took home first place paddling awards include a 4 person woman canoe with Toni Flament. Cameron Horning and Dylan Morton in the Clydesdale Class, Benjamin Patt and Alan Lichtenwalner in the Recreational canoe class and Constance Boyce in the women kayak medium class..

Second place finishers for Emporium competitors include Adam Goldsmith in men kayak short, and Abigail Kane in women kayak short. The father son duo of Saul and Eastyn Solveson took home second in the Recreational canoe class.

Dustin Burgoon and Steve VanEerden each placed third in their respective kayak classes. A mother daughter duo of Juneann Major and Lily Major took third place in the tandem kayak event.

Safety crews from the region coordinated by Mountaineer Search and Rescue line the course. “This event cannot happen without the support of the swift water teams, fire police, and ambulance crews,” thanked Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak. Solak continued thanking the community including sponsors and volunteers that organize bibs, and stream clean up before the race. The day of the event, Emporium Rotarians serve free hot drinks, committee members handle timing, awards and social media postings.

Beyond the Dirt is the next adventure race scheduled for August followed by the Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run in October. Information on both can be obtained by contacting the chamber office

10 Secluded Towns Scattered Throughout Pennsylvania’s Quehanna Wild Area

This article by John Goodman lists 10 small towns in the Quehanna Wild Area. Sinnemahoning is listed as #6 and Driftwood is listed as # 2.

Link to the complete article is here https://www.homestratosphere.com/secluded-towns-in-pennsylvanias-quehanna-wild-area

10 Secluded Towns Scattered Throughout Pennsylvania’s Quehanna Wild Area By John Goodman April 4, 2025 Pennsylvania

Sinnemahoning: A Hidden Gem in the Pennsylvania Wilds

Sinnemahoning is a small community with a population hovering around 200 people. It’s renowned for its opportunities to observe wildlife, especially elk and eagles, in their natural habitats. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy boating and fishing on the Sinnemahoning Creek and exploring the nearby state parks.

The town’s primary industries are centered on tourism and outdoor recreation. Its secluded nature comes from the vast, undeveloped lands that surround it, offering a refuge for both wildlife and those seeking a quiet escape. Situated in Cameron County, Sinnemahoning lies on the eastern edge of the Quehanna Wild Area. The town is accessed mainly via Route 120, a scenic byway that winds through mountains and forests.

Its remote location, nestled between ridges and waterways, enhances its seclusion. The journey to Sinnemahoning is part of the experience, as travelers pass through some of Pennsylvania’s most scenic and isolated regions.

Driftwood: A Riverside Retreat Far from the Beaten Path
Driftwood is a tiny borough with a population of just under 70 people, making it one of the most secluded spots on our list. Nestled along the Sinnemahoning Creek, it’s a haven for fishing, canoeing, and spotting wildlife.

The town has little in the way of industry, relying instead on the natural environment to draw visitors. Driftwood’s seclusion stems from its remote riverside location and the dense forests that surround it, offering an idyllic setting for those seeking solitude. Found in Cameron County, Driftwood lies at the confluence of several waterways, deep within Pennsylvania’s wilds. It’s accessible via Route 120, but the journey there underscores its isolation, passing through vast stretches of uninhabited land. The town’s remote position along the river enhances the feeling of seclusion. For travelers willing to venture off the main roads, Driftwood provides a peaceful retreat immersed in nature.

If you haven't followed this new CC Site, please do!
Created by local resident Emily Costanzo, this sites mission in to reach as many people as possible & let them know what Cameron County businesses have to offer! We are trying to reach as many potential customers and visitors to our area as possible. Please share this group with a friend, even if they live elsewhere. We would love to have more visitors in CamCo and even if they don't stop by, many of our artisans will ship Business owners - don't forget that you are able to join and post in this group using your business page.
