Job Description
The Storyteller will conduct storytimes and literacy programming for the Barbara Moscato Brown Public Library. Each high-quality and high-energy storytime provides one hour of reading, singing, talking, playing, and crafts. The work requires that the employee have some knowledge, skill, and ability in library clerical functions.
Storyteller is paid for 2 hours of work for each 1-hour storytime (1 hour for the event and 1 hour for activity/craft prep). All prep work for story hours can be done from home. Perfect for retiree or stay-at-home parent.
Responsibilities: Plan high-quality, engaging storytimes and literacy activities for a wide age-range of children.
Lead at least 2 high-quality storytimes each week engaging children and families in read-a-louds, partner reading, individual reading, and relevant language enrichment activities (games, crafts, writing). We would like to add a 3rd, evening session, if scheduling permits.
Provide a warm, fun, safe atmosphere for all children and families present.
Provide relevant resources to families as needed (e.g., Pre-K application, literacy events, and/or Barbara Moscato Brown Library information).
Work to build authentic relationships with parents to learn how best to encourage parents' efforts to support their child's learning and to seek their input on future programming.
Assist in development of the Children's, Juvenile, and Young Adult collections.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of early childhood education and childhood literacy.
Ability to prepare, lead, and implement engaging literacy-rich programming for children of various ages.
Dependability, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to pay attention to detail.
Ability to work as a member
Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration.
Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent required. Early education experience is preferred but not required.
Must be able to pass child safety clearances.
