Update on Saving Denton Hill State Park

Capri Clark & Brook Burfield at Denton Hill

Every time I drive by Denton Hill State Park, I keep my fingers crossed that it will be revived. I know many people from Cameron County enjoyed skiing at Denton Hill, my kids included.  It would be wonderful to have a four-season facility so close by.

Save Denton Hill State Park

While there will be no downhill skiing at Denton Hill State Park anytime soon, there’s now a ray of hope. A Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) spokesman says the logjam created by the coronavirus is expected to break in the first quarter of the new year and DCNR will seek proposals from potential concessionaires. A four-season attraction is envisioned. Blueprints call for improvements, redesign and new infrastructure for skiing; overnight accommodations; year-round recreation development; and community partnerships. The park is closed for downhill skiing but remains open for cross-country skiing. Eight miles of park trails connect with trails in the adjoining Susquehannock State Forest, including the 29-mile Denton Hill Cross-Country Ski Trail System, which is being groomed.

At a recent meeting of the Potter County Commissioners, it was announced that the commissioners have met with State Senator Cris Dush to seek his support for expediting the development of the Denton Hill Adventure Center. At last report, the bid notice to solicit vendors/partners is nearing release. The commissioners emphasized the importance of the state offering a vendor contract that is attractive enough to secure a private-sector partner. They said that boils down to how much money the state is willing to invest in its own park to give that partner a fighting chance to secure its own funding and profitably operate the Adventure Center.

A Master Plan has been created and those involved feel it is a step in the right direction. Read about it here
