Monarch Watch Butterfly Tagging 

Saturday, August 29, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM Monarch butterfly migration presentation followed by a short walk to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. Arial nets provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk through fields. All participants must wear face masks. Limit 24 people. Meet in front of the Wildlife Center. 

Bark Craft 

Saturday, August 29, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Learn the history of bark peeling in the north-central PA region while picking up a new craft skill by creating your very own take-home project using birch bark. Limited number of kits. Pre-registration is recommended. All ages welcome. Face masks required. Limit 24 people. Meet at Pavilion 1 in the 40 Maples Day Use Area. 

Owls of Pennsylvania

 Saturday, August 29, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM Have you ever heard an owl call and wondered what species of owl it was? Here is your chance to learn how to identify owls from the calls they make, what the different species look like, and what habitats they prefer. Following the 45-minute program, participants will have the option of taking a short walk to listen for owls or watching an educational video on owls. Face masks required. All ages welcome. Limit 24 people. Meet at the campground amphitheater. 

Kids’ Storytime and Nature Walk 

Sunday, August 30, 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM Join the park educator for a book reading, simple craft, and outdoor activity based on the book, “Good Trick, Walking Stick!” by Sheri Mabry Bestor. Intended for families with children ages 3-7. Older and younger siblings welcome. All participants must wear face masks. Limit 24 people. Meet in front of the Wildlife Center. 

The Pennsylvania Bucktails

 Saturday, September 5, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM Learn the fascinating history of the Pennsylvania Bucktails, the unit that was formed from the woodsmen, loggers, and rafters of the mountains and valleys of Northern Pennsylvania and became the most famous Pennsylvania regiment of the American Civil War. All ages welcome. Face masks required. Limit 24 people. Location TBD. Please call park office for location.

Austin Dam Disaster 

Saturday, September 5, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM Discover the story behind the 1911 collapse of the Austin Dam. Brief campground talk followed by 90-minute movie, “The Austin Disaster, 1911”, narrated by Willie Nelson. All are welcome to attend. Face masks required. Limit 24 people. Campground amphitheater. 

Reading a Topo Map

 Sunday, September 6, 9:00 AM – 10:15 AM Topographic maps provide useful information to hikers, hunters, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Learn how to read land features, determine distance, and access these helpful maps. Program intended for ages 10 to adult and may include travel over uneven terrain. Face masks required. Using a Compass

 Sunday, September 6, 3:00 PM – 4:15 PM When exploring the woods in the PA Wilds, you can’t always rely on your GPS to work. Stay safe in the outdoors by learning how to use a compass to orient a map and to travel in a specific direction. Program includes hands-on practice through family activities. Program intended for ages 8 to adult and may include travel over uneven terrain. All participants must wear face masks. Limit 24 people. Meet at 40 Maples Day Use Area. 

Weather: Fair, Foul, and Formidable 

Sunday, September 6, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM What is most deadly, lightning, wind, or hail? If you were exploring the outdoors and a storm popped up, would you know what to do? Learn about Earth's turbulent atmosphere and the forces that make the day fair or foul. Brief campground talk followed by 35-minute Eyewitness DVD, “Weather”. Good for all ages. Face masks required. Limit 24 people. Campground amphitheater.
