Dr. Maurus “Moose” L. Sorg, MD, MPH, 65, of 316 West Theresia Road, St. Marys, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018, at his cabin in McKean County as a result of an accident.
He was born on May 4, 1952 in St. Marys, son of the late Leonard Sorg and Rita Krellner Sorg. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1970.
Dr. Sorg graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, summa cum laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Penn State Hershey Medical School, where he met his wife of 39 years, Dr. Rosemaria Cienciva. He completed his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, OH and his family practice residency at Williamsport Hospital in Williamsport, PA. Dr. Sorg was board certified in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine, was certified in Sports Medicine, had a Master’s Degree in Public Health, and was a certified life coach. He was the Medical Director of the local hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation and occupational health departments and a former Medical Director of Pinecrest Manor. He practiced medicine in the community for over 35 years.
Dr. Sorg is survived by his wife, Rosemaria; by his daughters, Sarah Sorg and her husband Brian Muth of Silver Spring, MD, Rebecca Sorg and her fiancé George Dobson of St. Marys, and Rachael Sorg and her husband Edward Kaiser of Westbury, NY; and by four grandchildren, Nathan Muth, Eliana Muth, Bryson Myers, and Gianna Dobson. He is also survived by five sisters, Rose Mary Quinnan and her husband Steve of Roanoke, VA, Ruth Sorg of Collegeville, PA, Marian “Mamie” Sorg-Steimling and her husband Michael Steimling of Mifflinburg, PA, Anne Pistner and her husband Donald of St. Marys, and Amy Bencic of Homer City, PA; two brothers, David Sorg and his wife Ann, and Daniel Sorg, both of St. Marys; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Sorg was preceded in death by a brother, Timothy Sorg, a brother-in-law, John Bencic, and a sister-in-law, Sharon Vollmer Sorg.
Dr. Sorg was a very active and devoted member of the community. He was a member of the Queen of the World Church. He served on the Board of Directors at Elcam and the West Creek Rails-to-Trails. He was a pilot and served on the St. Marys Airport Authority. He was a member of the St. Marys Board of Health and served as the Elk County Republican Chairman. With his wife, he co-owned and operated Lifetime Health, Inc., which, at the time, was the community’s only complete health and recreational facility. He also was involved in the founding of the High Education Council, now known as the Community Education Council.
Dr. Sorg was an avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast. In addition to extensively hunting locally, he enjoyed numerous backpack hunting trips across North America with the goal of achieving the North American 29. He loved outdoor hiking adventures, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and hiking numerous National Parks. His love of the outdoors and community service started at an early age, when he participated in scouting. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and hiked Philmont. One of Dr. Sorg’s passions was to help as many others safely and successfully enjoy hunting and the outdoors. He founded Outdoor Sports Medicine, P.C., he authored “Basic Training for the Wilderness Hunter,” a reference for safety and preparation for outdoor adventures, gave numerous presentations on healthy hunting geared to the general public, and served as an invited speaker at many sporting conventions.
He had an unselfish love for his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, with whom he shared special bonds. He will always be remembered for his kindness to everyone he knew, for his generosity of his time and talents, always willing to help whenever he could, and for his enthusiastic love of life and of people. His philosophy was “Live one day at a time, for tomorrow is not promised to anyone.” He certainly left this world a better place and will be deeply missed by his friends, family, patients, and all who knew him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Queen of the World Church on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at 12:00 PM, with the Rev. Jeff Noble, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Rita M. Sorg and Marcella A. Largey Memorial Fund for the Elcam Community Center, c/o the Elk County Community Foundation, PO Box 934, St. Marys, PA 15857.
