September is a perfect time of year to watch wildlife at Sinnemahoning State Park. Birds and butterflies are migrating, elk are bugling, and the trees on the mountains are just beginning to show fall color. Programs this week include:
Homeschool Day: Monarch Butterflies, Thursday, September 12, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Discover the connection between monarch biology and habitat needs. Catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. Open to all students, grades K-12. Pre-registration required. Meet in Wildlife Center Classroom.
Monarch Watch Butterfly Tagging, Friday, September 13, 1:00 PM-2:30 PM. Not a homeschooler but would love to participate in the Monarch Watch program? Join park staff on Friday afternoon to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. All ages welcome. No pre-registration required. Be prepared to walk in fields. Meet in Wildlife Center classroom. (This program will be repeated on Saturday, September 21, from 2:00-3:30 pm.)
Elk in PA: Understanding Elk Behavior, Saturday, September 14, 1:00 PM -2:00 PM. Mid-September through October is elk mating season in PA. This year, learn to read elk behavior by understanding herd dynamics, body language & vocalizations. PowerPoint presentation with video and group discussion. Held indoors in the Wildlife Center Classroom.
Elk Watch, Saturday, September 14, 5:00 PM until dark. The elk in the park have started bugling. Join park staff and volunteers as we try to spot the bull elk in the fields of Sinnemahoning while learning more about these impressive animals. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Meet at the Stevenson Dam Overlook.
Pontoon Boat Tours, Sunday, September 15, 10:30-11:45 AM and 12:00-1:15 PM. View herons, kingfishers, turtles, eagles and other wildlife while learning about the aquatic habitats that support them. Program is free, but donations are requested. Group size is limited. Pre-registration is recommended. Meet at the boat launch of the Lake Day Use Area.

Cameron County Hometown Sports Hall of Fame
Cameron County Hometown Sports Hall of Fame, September 28, 2019, Cameron County High School Auditorium, meet and greet at 5:00 PM, Induction ceremony starts at 6:30 PM. Celebrating Coach "Papa" John Fragale and the 1999 Football Team.
Hometown Mentors, Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients for its biennial Cameron County Sports Hall of Fame. This year, there are two inductees. First is the long-time head coach of the Cameron County Football Team, Coach John Fragale. Coach Fragale grew up in Emporium, Pennsylvania and graduated from Cameron County High School in 1966. He served as the Head Coach for the 1999 Raider squad. He coached the Red Raiders for over 35 of years, until his retirement in 2012. In the course of his tenure coaching, Coach Fragale mentored hundreds of young men both on the field and off field, which earned him the nick-name of ‘Papa John.’
HMI will also induct the 1999 Red Raider Football Team. The 1999 Football Team is among the most successful sports teams in Cameron County High School history. The team notably achieved a 12-1 record, becoming both the Allegheny Mountain League and District Nine champions in the process. Some of the most memorable games during the 1999 historic season were the long-awaited twin victories over the rival Smethport Hubbers during the regular season and in the AML Championship Game, the record-setting 72-6 victory over the Ridgway Elkers, and the miraculous final drive and victory over the Sharpsville Blue Devils, which launched the Red Raiders to the final eight in the PIAA Class A playoffs. The 1999 Red Raider season ended with heartbreaking double overtime loss against the Bishop Carroll Huskies.
The 1999 Team and Coach Fragale will be honored in a ceremony held at the Cameron County High School Auditorium on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 5 p.m. All are encouraged to attend this event, and there is no admission fee. Any attendee desiring to donate to HMI will be able to do so at the ceremony. Questions about this event may be directed to Annette Campbell, Hall of Fame Project Manager and Joe Malizia, HMI President.

Senior Center Bus Trip
The upcoming Bus Trip to the Covered Bridge and Craft Festival at Knobel's near Danville, Pa is fast approaching! The bus will be leaving Emporium around 6am on October 3rd & returning that evening around 7pm.
Participants will be free to explore the festival how they please. There will be almost 400 craft vendors and various food vendors!
The cost for the bus transportation is $55/person and $ is due by September 20th.

Francis M. "Sam" Hardinger
Francis M. "Sam" Hardinger, 81, of 113 Hardinger Road, Sinnemahoning, PA died at his residence, Sinnemahoning, PA on Tuesday afternoon following a lengthy illness (September 10, 2019).
He was born September 28, 1937 in South Park, Allegheny County, PA a son of the late Thomas and Mary Twig Hardinger. On August 8, 1964 in Overbrook, PA he married the late Mary Brain.
Sam graduated in 1956 from Snowden Township High School in Allegheny County and then entered the Army and served during the Vietnam Era. He retired from The Army Corp of Engineers where he worked for many years. After he retired he moved to Cameron County and became the Grove Township Supervisor where he served for over 20 years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Driftwood, VFW and the American Legion in Emporium and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Gibson, Emporium; two sons, Cyril Hardinger, Driftwood; and Daniel (Amy) Hardinger, Bethel Park, PA; five grandchildren, Ashley Grovanz, Samantha, Lauren, Cory and Alex Hardinger; two great grandchildren, Gabrella Gibson and Diesel Grovanz; three
sisters, Karen (Skip) Felton, Midway, PA; Jane Krystek, Columbus, OH; Nancy Hardinger, Baldwin, PA.
Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a sister, Dolly and four brothers, Denny, Ron, Bob and Tom.
Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth St., Emporium, PA on Sunday from 2-4 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (September 16, 2019) at 11:00 AM with Fr. Justin P. Pino, Pastor, St. Leo Catholic Church, Ridgway, PA, as Celebrant. A Military .
Burial Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail at the
Gilmore Cemetery, Austin, PA.

She is looking forward adding new programs and projects at the library and also expanding activities on social medial platforms for the younger generation.

Thomas R. Wilk
Thomas R. Wilk, 89, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of Route 120 Truman died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, on Friday morning (September 6, 2019).
He was born December 12, 1929 in Cresson, PA a son of the late John and Mary Welshko Wilk.
On April 18, 1953 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Marys he married the late Rose Reed Wilk.
Tom graduated from Cresson High School in the class of 1949. He served with the US Army during the Korean War. After his time of service he worked for the PA Rail Road and then for the former Carl Brown Machine Shop, Cameron Manufacturing and then he worked at Pennsylvania Pressed Metals until retirement. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church and enjoyed
hunting and fishing.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara, Mrs. Matthew Grimone, Emporium; two grandchildren, Heather and Bre (Shad) Boschert and one great granddaughter, Tatum; one sister, Shirley, Mrs. Paul Pigza, Cleveland, Ohio.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Wilk; grandson, Cash Grimone and three brothers, Frank, William and Jack Wilk.
Graveside Service will be at St. Mark Cemetery Chapel, Route 120, Emporium, PA on Thursday (September 12, 2019) at 3:00 PM with Fr. Justin P. Pino, Pastor, St. Leo Catholic Church, officiating. A Military Service accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail will follow.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Gregory R. Strahl
Gregory R. Strahl, 62, of 52 S. Mountain Road, Emporium, PA died at his residence on Tuesday afternoon (September 3, 2019). He was born August 30, 1957 in St. Marys, PA a son of the late Robert and Evelyn Smith Strahl.
Greg graduated from Cameron County High School. He retired from GE Motor Coil where he worked for many years. He was a member of the Emporium Vets Club and enjoyed bowling years ago. Greg loved spending time with his two grandsons.
He is survived by one daughter, Nicole "Nikki" (Justin) Bure, Emporium; two grandsons, Brennan and Beckett; two sisters, Terri Cunningham and Kathy (Don) Osti; three brothers, Kurt (Carolann) Strahl, Brad (Nancy) Strahl and Colin Strahl all from Emporium and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Evelyn Smith Strahl and a nephew, Cyle Strahl.
The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Rotary News
Rotarian, Vanessa Bidwell, introduced guest speaker, Brad Chapman (left), President and CEO of Penn Highlands Elk at the August 20th at Rotary luncheon meeting. Mr. Chapman updated the club on renovations at the hospital, Pine Crest and the medical office building. Penn Highlands Elk continues to be the largest employer in Elk County with a 2.7 million dollar operating budget and remains a fiscally sound hospital. In 2018 there were 15,000 emergency room and 24,000 Q-Care visits. They continue to focus on addressing quality, stability and wait times.
Several new physicians have been hired including Dr. Zubar a General Surgeon from Pakistan who resides in Ridgway with his family. Dr. Zubar loves the small community and wants to provide competent care in a compassionate way.
Rotary would like to thank everyone who purchased a picnic ticket, volunteered and donated items making this year’s fundraiser a huge success!

Hello Fellow Residents and Cam Co Enthusiasts,
It's been a crazy summer -- as project coordinator for the Cam Co Project, I had to take a huge step back to heal from surgery and we've lost some momentum.
But we're back and September brings a Huge - FINAL push to collect your stories and to give you opportunities to share your hopes, dreams, and concerns. Story gathering will end on Sept. 30th.
Looking Ahead
October 1st, we'll begin taking all the stories you've shared and drafting Cameron County's Community Value Statements -- summarizing what we collectively view as the Heart and Soul of Cameron County. We’re also excited to begin really sharing the quotes and ideas, from the stories we've heard, back to residents, both the surprising and endearing.
We'll be spending November sharing the Community Value Statements, we've drafted with EVERYONE, asking, “Did we get this right?” Keep an eye out for ways to comment on what you think.
Once we're sure those Value Statements are correct, we'll be transitioning to Phase 3 of the Community Heart and Soul model: “Make Decisions”.
Beginning in December, everyone will be invited to take part in resident visioning sessions where we'll think about Cameron County's future through the eyes of each Value Statement. What we need to work on. What actions they require to thrive. What projects need to occur or cease. What ideas they inspire. Phase 3 is where our past meets our future -- and all the amazing ideas you've been sharing with us and the ideas you've yet to share, have the chance to become reality.
So, please, Please, PLEASE, if you haven't shared your "My Cameron County" story, reach out to us.
The stories we gather now, each of the unique ways you view our communities and interact with them, it all matters. The rich data each story holds will help us justify the projects and initiatives of positive growth in our future. How we get them approved, funded, implemented.
We've already learned so much from the over 500 stories, both thin and thick, we've collected from our fellow residents, young and old. We want you all to be a part of this, because you all matter. Please don't miss your chance to be heard!

Dr. Dresser earned his medical degree from Kent State University of Podiatric Medicine, Independence, Ohio, and completed his surgical residency at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center, Hartford, Conn. He is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell
After speaking to his sister Deb, I wanted to share this wonderful article about Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell, I3 Tactical Noncommissioned Officer. Hallowell, is native of Emporium, Pennsylvania. Thank you for your service.
This week we are featuring Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell, I3 Tactical Noncommissioned Officer. Hallowell, native of Emporium, Pennsylvania, has been here at West Point just over a year. He originally enlisted in the Army as a 15P, Aviation Operations Specialist 16 years ago.
What are your roles and responsibilities as a TAC NCO?
I am involved in all of the training for the cadets. Were with them for the majority of their day from when they wake up in the morning to ensuring they maintain standards and discipline just like in a normal operational unit. We are basically a jack of all trades, if you will. We're heavily involved in their academics and their military training. We speak to their instructors when they're not doing well in class as a liaison between the cadet and the instructor. TAC NCOs have a constant one-on-one interaction with the future lieutenants of our Army.
What do you hope cadets will take away from you while you are here?
I hope that I establish what the standard is for an NCO when they get to their operational unit and they're counseling their platoon sergeant. I've taught them what an NCO should be and what they what they can expect from us.
From your perspective, why do you feel the NCO is the backbone of the Army?
I think we're the backbone of the Army because anything that goes on in an organization, whether it is training, standards or discipline, goes through an NCO. We're that first line of common sense.
What advice would you give to a junior leader coming up in the Army?
Do your duty, lead honorably, live honorably and demonstrate excellence.
Are there any moments that stick out to you that you will remember most while you've been a TAC NCO?
The summer trainings will always stick out. It's more of the field environment. For me specifically, it was at Cadet Basic Training last summer. That was my first exposure to West Point and new cadets when I first arrived here. The camaraderie that we were able to develop as a company was great.
Is your role here different than being a platoon sergeant in the regular Army?
I would say the only major difference would be the population. In the operational Army were training junior Soldiers who will take our position one day. Here we're making better platoon leaders so when they meet their platoon, they have the knowledge of what a good NCO should be.
Why do you feel the TAC NCO is so important to mold the future leaders in the Army?
Operationally, an officer has their role, and the NCOs role is to complement that officer. We're more of the standards and disciplinarians of the Army and we instill that sense of discipline and pride in the unit. The officers can speak to career progression and what it's like to be an officer, but we are here to show future officers what our role looks like before they graduate and move on to lead Soldiers.
This month we're talking about loyalty, which is one of the Army values. What does loyalty mean to you and how do you apply it to your life?
To live it means having faith that the leadership above you is going to have your back when the time comes. The same thing goes for the cadets. I demonstrate my loyalty to them and I'm willing to stand up and fight for them. Loyalty to me would be my superiors doing the same.
