Wayne Taylor Ozenbaugh

Wayne Taylor Ozenbaugh, 78, ( Pappy 'O ) of Sinnemahoning, PA formerly of Washington County, passed away on January 4, 2011, in the Dubois Continuous Care Facility following a breif illness. Surviving are two daughter's and a son-in-law, Janice L, and Donald D Miller, II of Burgettstown P.A. and, Karen L Wilson of Hickory, PA. Three granddaughter's: Megan A Cuthbertson, Whitney A Wilson and Valerie J Miller. also a grandson, Andrew J Miller, and many neice's and nephew's. He is preceded in death by two sister's, Mary Wallo, and Martha Polochak. Two brother's, Jack Ozenbaugh, and Ordell Ozenbaugh, and a nephew, Vincent Ozenbaugh.


He was a 32nd degree free mason, and belonged to Richard Vaux Lodge, # 454 F & A M of Burgettstown, PA. He was a life long professional truckdriver, and was employed by several different trucking company's within the tri state area, untill retirement. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and for the past sixteen year's he made his home, and lived a peaceful life, in the mountain's he loved so dearly.

A memorial service will be held, for the immediate family, at a later date, during spring turkey season in the mountain's of North Central Pennsylvania.

Millard Dude" Williams Jr., 85 Obit

Millard Dude" Williams Jr., 85, of Sizerville Road, Emporium, passed away on Wednesday ( Jan.5,2011) at Elk Regional Health Center, St.Marys, after a lengthy illness.


Mr. Williams was born Oct. 12th 1925, to Millard and Sylvia Williams. He married Grace Frederick on July 15, 1950, in Ridgway. After serving in the U.S. Army he worked at Sylvania as a truck driver until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, five children, Diane Williams of Emporium, Carol (Gene) Lentz of Austin, David "Dude" Williams of Emporium, Sylvia "Jeanie"Barber of Galeton and Brenda Williams of Emporium; three grandchildren, Tammy (Lentz) Clancyand Michael Lentz of Austin and Bill Foley; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doris Cook.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday ( Jan. 8,2011) at the Gardeau Community Church, followed by a luncheon at 2 p.m. at the Emporium VFW

Charges To Be Filed

An Emporium man will be charged with Harassment after an incident at a private residence on East Allegany Street in Emporium on Monday night at 9:05 pm.

Richard James Moate, 52, of Emporium, PA, was in a verbal confrontation with a 18 year old and a 19 year old female which escalated. Moate subjected both women to unwanted physical contact.

Shippen Township Residents

As of Jan 1, 2011, Shippen Township will have new office hours. The office will be open Mondays thru Thursday from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM and closed on Fridays.


Also beginning Jan 1, 2011, the Shippen township refuse collections scheduled for Fridays will be permanently changed to Thursdays. There will no longer be collections on Fridays.

Maxine D. Johnson

Maxine D. Johnson, 89, of 5309 Bucktail Trail, Driftwood, PA died at S.W. General Hospital, Middleburg Heights, Ohio Tuesday (December 28, 2010) evening.
She was born November 18, 1921 in Emporium a daughter of the late Delbert and May Conners.
On January 20, 1940 in Emporium she married the late Alson Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson retired in 1987 from Motor Coil where she worked for many years. She was a member of the Sinnamahoning and May Hollow Sportsman's Clubs and the Sinnamahoning & Driftwood Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. She helped organize Santa comes to Driftwood.

Sinnemahoning Crash

A Sinnemahoning woman was moderately injured at 1:00 am Thursday morning when her car slid off the roadway on Railroad Street in the Village of Sinnemahoning and sheared two utility poles from the ground.


Alicia M. Cassabian, 22, of Railroad Street, Sinnemahoning, PA, was transported from the scene of the crash to Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys by Sinnemahoning ambulance.

Troopers said the crash occurred as Cassabian was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am West on Railroad Street when she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle began to spin clockwise on the road and exited on the north berm. The car impacted two utility poles with the driver's side, shearing the poles off at the ground level.

Cassabian fled the scene and was located at her residence. She was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. She will be charged in District Court for traffic violations. The vehicle suffered disabling damage.

No Injuries In Mishap

An Emporium driver was not injured on Monday when his 1999 Ford Ranger went off Route 120 in Shippen Township and hit a road sign and a utility pole.
Kevin S. Crum, 19, of Emporium, PA, was negotiating a left hand curve and lost control of his vehicle. The Ranger then traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a road sign and then a utility pole. He was wearing a seat belt.
Crum left the scene and phones police about 30 minutes later, prior to returning to the scene. Summary traffic citations have been filed through District Court 59-3-01.

His vehicle was towed by Ramsey's Garage.

Gibson Township Camps Burglarized

Six Cameron County camps were burglarized on Hemlock Lane in Gibson Township between 12-12 and 12-15, 2010.   Unknown burglars gaines entry to the camps by prying doors open with an unknown object. They then entered the camps and opened adrawers and moved furniture.

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Heart of Cole Community Connections employee giving club donated $200 to senior centers throughout CCMH’s service area in Potter, McKean, Cameron and northwestern Tioga counties this holiday season. Mary M. Williams, 87

Mary M. Williams, 87, of 880 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium formerly of Driftwood died at her residence on Sunday (December 12, 2010) evening.


She was born September 27, 1923 in Pittsburgh a daughter of the late Joseph and Beatrice Morgan.  On April 17, 1958 in Pittsburgh she married the late James E. Williams, Sr.
Mrs. Williams graduated from South Hills High School in the class of 1941. Years ago, while residing in Pittsburgh, she was the manager of a Poultry grocery store. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

Surviving are three sons, James and Tawnie Williams of Emporium, and Joseph and Joyce Williams of Driftwood, Robert Grief of Sterling Run, and a daughter Mary Williams of Dubois. Eight grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

She was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Beatrice Morgan and husband
James E. Williams, Sr. who died May 31, 2005, and two brothers Joseph and Leo Morgan.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-6 PM.

Joyce E. Sherry, 74, of PO Box 84, Castle Garden Rd., Driftwood, PA died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, Pennsylvania Monday, December 13, 2010 morning.


She was born May 30, 1936 in St. Marys a daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Moate Knisley. She married the late Merle D. Sherry.

Mrs. Sherry graduated from Emporium High School. She was a retired secretary having worked at several local businesses in the area. She was a member of the Sinnamahoning United Methodist Church and also the Driftwood Senior Center.

Surviving are a son Merle Sherry, II and his wife Brandie of Sinnemahoning, three grandchildren. a sister, Nancy Reedof Weedville and a brother Walter Knisley of Driftwood.
She was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Florence Moate Knisley and husband
Merle D. Sherry, I., a sister Bernice Belden and brother Kenneth Knisley.

Chimney Fire reported in Driftwood

At 7:50 pm on Saturday, Sinnemahoning and Emporium, St. Marys, and Austin have been dispatched to a structure fire at 22 4th Street in Driftwood. Austin has been diverted to Sinnemahoning Fire Station.


On scene report indicates a chimney fire with extension into a wall and attic with flames showing. Firefighters are inside the structure attempting to access the attic of the structure where there is an active fire.

Walter S. Spehalski

Walter S. Spehalski, 82, of 1783 Old West Creek Rd, Emporium, PA died at Hamot Medical Center, Erie on Thursday evening (December 9, 2010)

He was born October 12, 1928 in DuBois a son of the late Stanley and Katherine Matula Spehalski.
On April 25, 1953 at St. Michael Church in DuBois he married Valerie Wojtaszek Spehalski, who Survives.

Mr. Spehalski graduated from DuBois High School and from Penn State University where he received a BSME degree. He retired from North American Phillips, after many years, where he was the Plant Manager of the Equipment Development Plant. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church where he was the choir director for over 35 years. He had been a member of the Emporium Lions Club, and a member of the St. Marys Singing Dutchmen.

Surviving in addition to his wife Valerie Spehalski are three sons, Walter Spehalski and his wife Cecilia of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Robert Spehalski and his wife Julia of Emmaus, PA.,and Thomas Spehalski and his wife Bonnie of Emporium, PA.  Ten grandchildren, Elizabeth, Regina, Steven, Daniel, Andrew, Stacey Kayela, Eric, Keith, and Elyse Spehalski.   Two sisters, Helen Kopeck and Virginia, Mrs. Willliam Good, both who reside in DuBois Pa. and one brother, Richard Spehalski and his wife Nancy of Port St. Lucie, FL.
Mr. Spehalski was preceded in death by parents: Stanley and Katherine Matula Spehalski, a brother Raymon Spehalski during WW II and nephew Mike Kopeck.

SUV Goes In Creek After Missed Turn


An Emporium man is ok after his 2002 Ford Explorer went off the road into a creek on Monday at 7:00 pm in Gibson Township, Cameron County.
Troopers said the crash occurred as Alvin H. Brown, 63, of Emporium, PA, was driving the Explorer north on Wykoff Run Road , approached a left hand turn in the roadway, and was unable to negotiate the turn and traveled off the east embankment and came to final rest in a creek.
Brown was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Ramsey's Towing towed his vehicle

CCMH Expands Orthopedic Team

Andrew W. Gottschalk, MD has joined the medical staff at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.


Dr. Gottschalk specializes in sports medicine and will join Drs. Giannotti, Foust and Nestor and physician assistants Todd Rudy, Kevin George, and Chad Jackson at Champion Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Coudersport and Olean.

After earning a medical degree at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Gottschalk completed an internship and residency at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

During his fellowship, he provided sports medicine coverage for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns and Indians, Cleveland State University Vikings, and Notre Dame College Falcons. He served as a staff physician for medical programs in El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Gottschalk serves as musculoskeletal health editor at the Family Physicians Inquiries Network. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

PSP Report Car Damaged

An Emporium woman's car was damaged overnight December 1 into December 2 on Sizerville Road in Shippen Township.

Susan Leightley of Emporium, PA, reported that someone used a sharp object to scratch the paint on her blue 1999 Mercury Sable while it was parked at the Furniture For Less parking lot at 675 Sizerville road. The perpetrator also placed packaging material in the nozzle of the victim's gas tank.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact PSP Emporium at 814-486-3321.

Gregory Scott Hess

Gregory Scott Hess, 50, of 20519 Ccc Memorial Hwy, Emporium, PA formerly of Lancaster County died on State Rt. 120, Emporium on Saturday (December 4, 2010) afternoon in an automobile accident.


He was born August 28, 1960 in Lancaster, PA a son of Elva Bucher Hess, Wrightsville, PA and the late Eli E. Hess.  Scott graduated from Manheim Central High School. He was a self-employed carpenter. Scott loved hunting and hiking in the mountains.

Surviving in addition to his mother Elva Bucher Hess of Wrightsville are two brothers Steven E. Hess of Mount Wolf, PA and Kenneth L. Hess, Palmyra, PA, two nephews: Adam and Brady Hess and three nieces, Krystal Hummer, Kelly Hess and Ashley Campbell.  He was preceded in Death By his father Eli Hess who died in 2001.

There will be No Visitation .    Private Funeral Services will be held by his family at a later date.

Lawrence E. Kelley,

Port Allegany -- Lawrence E. Kelley, 24, of East Mill Street, passed away Monday (Nov. 29, 2010) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 4, 1986, in Coudersport, he was a son of John M. and Mary E. Dinch Kelley. On June 27, 2008, in Coudersport he married Janelle E. Franklin, who survives.
Staff Sergeant Lawrence Kelley was a U.S. Army National Guard Recruiter, serving with the Company C- 1-112th INF (SBCT). He served one tour in Iraq.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of the Port Allegany High School, Class of 2005, where he was active on the wrestling and football teams. He also attended Seneca Highlands Area Vocational Technical School, Port Allegany, 2002-2005, for heavy equipment.
He was a member of the Roulette Fire Department and Roulette Alumni Association.

Surviving in addition to his parents, John and Mary Kelley; maternal grandmother, Betty J. Gideon of New Caney, Texas; and wife Janelle; are a son, Nathaniel A. Pelton, and daughter Ariana E. Kelley, both of Port Allegany; two brothers, Jeffrey S. (Cindy) Kelley of Bradford, and John M. (Erika) Kelley of Turtlepoint; four sisters, Brenda L. Haggard of Roulette, Kristi E. (Allan) Moore of Mesa, Ariz., Amanda J. (Karl) Renner and Carrie L. Kelley of Roulette; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with Chaplin Richard J. Allen officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

A military service will be conducted at the graveside following the funeral, by Company C- 1-112th INF (SBCT).

Fatal Crash on Rt 120 East

Pennsylvania State Police at Emporium are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday afternoon at 3:25 pm on Route 120, 2/10 mile east of Memorial Springs in Portage Township, Cameron County.

A known operator was driving a 1994 Dodge Truck west on Route 120 when the operator lost control of the truck, crossing into the eastbound lane of travel, and impacting a deep culvert, causing the truck to roll over several times.
The dispatch reported entrapment.
Troopers said the truck was severely damaged and had airbag deployment. The driver was wearing a seat belt. They are withholding the name of the operator who was killed until next of kin is notified. The investigation is continuing.

Angela R. Loncosky

OLEAN, NY- Angela R. Loncosky of School St., formerly of Port Allegany, passed away Monday (Nov. 29, 2010) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born January 20, 1980, in Coudersport, she was a daughter of Michael E. and Kathleen A. McNealis Loncosky.
Ms. Loncosky was a customer service representative for Time Warner in Olean, NY.

She was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, Class of 1998, where she was a co-captain on the cheerleading squad, and member of the school choir, marching band, and concert band. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Who’s Who among High School Students, a Tandy Technology Scholar, and Big 30 Cheerleader.   She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 6391, Port Allegany.

Surviving in addition to her mother, Kathleen and father, Michael, are her maternal grandparents, Jean (Larry Coughlin) Hopkins; two sisters, Amanda M. Loncosky of Olean, NY, and Tina Loncosky of Erie, PA; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 4, 2010) in the First Baptist Church of Port Allegany, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael Culver, pastor, officiating.

Fibromyalgia Support Group Seeks Interest

A new support group is expected to start at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in January.


Terri Cooney hopes to offer a fibromyalgia support group, based on interest, that would provide support and education to patients and caregivers. She also hopes the group will provide coping strategies and moral support as well as boost awareness about the illness. Since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2005, she has researched the illness extensively, including various treatment options.

Cooney is a retired high school English teacher with 16 years of experience. She is also a Reiki master and teacher and is experienced in a number of mind/body therapies such as meditation, biofeedback, yoga and hypnosis.

Rain, Rain, And More Rain

Many areas of Cameron County, as well as neighboring counties, felt the wrath of heavy rain, snow, sleet and falling temperatures. Schools, roads and several businesses closed and there is flooding in many areas.  At noon today, the water was still bridge high at the East end of town and quite a bit of debris clung to the scaffolding underneath this bridge.

Marian A. Whiting

Marian A. Whiting, 84, of St. Marys, formerly of Emporium, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010, in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.  Born April 19, 1926 in Port Allegany, she was the daughter of Roland and Grace Coon.
On September 30, 1940 in Selingsgrove, she married James Whiting who survives. This past September Marian and Jim celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

A longtime resident of Emporium, Mrs. Whiting was a 1944 graduate of Emporium High School. She was employed briefly by Sylvania Electric in Emporium and was later employed as a clerk by several local businesses.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium and the Order of Eastern Star Emporium Chapter #101.

In addition to her husband, James, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Beverly (Richard) Cool of Emporium; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Mrs. Whiting was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.

Visitations with Memorial Tribute will be held Friday, December 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, where Funeral &

Committal Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Gary Atkinson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

CCHS Art Show & Christmas Concert

The Cameron County High Schools annual Christmas Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 7th at 7 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium.  The Junior and Senior concert bands will perform "Christmas at the Movies", selections from "The Polar Express", "Nightmare Before Christmas," "White Christmas," and other favorite holiday movies.

The CCHS Art Department will have student artwork on display in the gymnasium. Stop in early to browse through the CCHS Winter Art show.

15th Annual Christmas Benefit Dance

Cameron Counties 15th Annual Christmas Benefit Dance will be held this Saturday, December 4th, from 8 - 10 p.m. at the VFW club in Emporium.  This dance benefits a local family, so bring a friend along for an evening of fun.  Couples $25. Gift Tree Benefit

Shane Ellsworth Lathrop

Shane Ellsworth Lathrop, 39, of Port Allegany, died unexpectedly Monday (November 22, 2010) in the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.


He was born Oct 12, 1971 in Olean, NY, a son of Andrew (Anne) and Ellie Berg Lathrop. On July 3, 2004, in Niagara Falls, NY, he married Kelly Flint, who survives.

Mr. Lathrop was a 1989 graduate of Smethport Area Jr./Sr. High School and had worked as a quality manager at PSM Brownco of Emporium, PA.  He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Port Allegany, the American Legion; John Berg Post #976 of Crosby, and was social member of the VFW #212 of Bradford, PA.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by four sons: Andrew, Blaine, and Sean Lathrop, all of Emporium, PA, and Jack Lathrop of Port Allegany one brother: Sean (Laurie) Lathrop of Port Allegany.
Two  step brothers: Frank (Sandy) Mason of Eldred and Greg (Stephanie) Mason of Statesville, NC

Five  nieces: Rebecca, Allison, and Hannah Lathrop, Lila and Gillian Ruff and one nephew Grayson Ruff

Shane was preceded in death by one step brother, Todd Mason.

Robert "Rob" B. Colwell, Jr

Robert "Rob" B. Colwell, Jr., 60, of 113 W. 4th Street, Emporium, PA died at his residence, Emporium on Saturday morning following a lengthy illness. (November 20, 2010)  He was born May 27, 1950 in Port Allegany a son of Angeline Fapore Colwell, Port Allegany and the late Robert B. Colwell, Sr.

On August 8, 1981 in St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Port Allegany he married Tracy Boschert Colwell, who Survives.  Mr. Colwell graduated from Port Allegany High School in the class of 1968 and then from Alfred State University. He was employed for over 30 years at Northern Tier Community Action and Director of Head Start for the past 20 years. He was one of the co-founders of the County Food Pantry in Emporium. He was also a Grant writer for many projects in the County. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church

Surviving in addition to his mother Angeline Fapore Colwell and his wife Tracy Boschert Colwell
are sons Matthew and Timothy Colwell of Emporium.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert B. Colwell, Sr. who died Aug. 22, 2007.

Local Resident Discusses Rails To Trails Project

Jeff Ream, an engineer for Gannett Fleming, Inc., discussed some of the design aspects for the proposed West Creek Recreational Trail during a public meeting held Wednesday evening at city hall.


The final public meeting regarding the master site plan for the West Creek Recreational Trail, a planned Rails-to-Trails corridor between St. Marys and Emporium, was held Wednesday evening at St. Marys City Hall. The final plan will now be sent to the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for review.

According to Michelle A. Brummer, environmental planner for Gannett Fleming, Inc., the proposal is for a trail along an abandoned 19-mile segment of railroad that is now owned by the West Creek Recreational Trail Association, Inc.

"It runs from Emporium to St. Marys along West Creek and there are portions of it along Route 120," Brummer said. "The uses proposed for this are walking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the appropriate seasons."

ATV use will not be permitted on the trail.

Brummer explained that the development process for the master site plan included meetings with the West Creek Recreational Trail Association, Inc., as well as two informational sessions that were held last fall in St. Marys and Emporium.

A feasibility study was also conducted for the project, and Brummer said it indicated that there is a need for safe, accessible recreational trails in St. Marys and Emporium.

"As far as close-to-home recreational facilities, there are some parks. There are actually several parks here in St. Marys and just a couple parks in Emporium, but they really focus on playgrounds and sports fields. It doesn't do anything for fitness walking, walking for health, walking to observe nature, or study of nature, which are also recreational activities," Brummer said.

At the same time, there are still a number of challenges that still need to be addressed, she noted.

"We do have potential conflicts. We've got a number of highway and street crossings, so [we've had to address] how we manage trail crossings of those highways and roadways. We still need to permit emergency vehicle access, so it's not like we can block those entrances altogether. We need to have access for ambulance or police to be able to get onto the trail if necessary and we've got some bridges that are not in ready-to-use condition," Brummer said.

Jeff Ream, an engineer for Gannett Fleming, Inc., explained that items considered in the study included potential trail surfaces and necessary safety upgrades to bridges along the trail.

"This study was not a full-blown engineering study," Ream said. "This isn't final design. We looked into these engineering aspects to the level that we needed to in order to develop a good budgetary cost estimate for future funding. That future funding then will address final design and construction of the project."

Work Continues

With the weather on their side, workers continue with the demolition of one Main street building and the restoration of another. The former 'Sylvias" or "Judy's" store is almost completely torn down. Across the street, the former "Big G" is receiving a complete makeover of the store front as well as siding for the building. Gone are the large glass windows that stretched across the store front. Smaller windows have replaced them and a stone wall creates a whole new look.
