Building Demolition

Emporium will lose another building beginning Wed, Nov 10th. While the former "Judy's" store is being removed, traffic thru the alley between the vacant stores of Jasper Harris & Sons & Judy's will be closed to through traffic. Residents that need to access the road behind the buildings may do so by using the Chestnut street entrance.
The Jasper Harris store is rumored to be next on the demolition block.

Paul F. "Freddie" Lewis, Jr.,

Paul F. "Freddie" Lewis, Jr., 76, of 71 Pine Glen Rd., Emporium, PA died at his residence on Monday (November 8, 2010) morning. He was born May 30, 1934 in Emporium a son of the late Paul F. and Viola Bennett Lewis, Sr.

On December 12, 1953 in Emporium he married Dorothy Donahue Lewis, who Survives.
Mr. Lewis retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation where he worked for over 40 years. He was a member of the Emporium County Club. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Edward L. Horning

Edward L. Horning, Sr., 82, of Midland Rd., Emporium, died Thursday, November 4, 2010, in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.

Born May 16, 1928 in Emporium, he was the son of the late Byron H. Horning, Sr. and Lola Schwab Horning.

On April 30, 1949 in Emporium, he married Harriet Kennedy who died May 3, 2000. On December 27, 2005 in Emporium, he married Jane Mullens who survives.

A lifelong resident of Emporium, Mr. Horning was a 1946 graduate of Emporium High School. From 1959 until 1973 he operated the Esso station on West Fourth Street in Emporium. He then opened Ed Horning’s Fuel Oil in Emporium and in the following years was also awarded many trash removal contracts in the surrounding townships. In 1994 he opened Store All Rentals in Emporium and for many years was employed as a school bus driver for the Cameron County School District. Mr. Horning also served as Cameron County commissioner for four years.

Mr. Horning was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emporium where he was a former deacon. He was a member of Emporium Lodge 382 F&AM, the local ATV Association, Bucktail Rod & Gun Club, and was a long time member and past president of the Tom Mix Rangers. He was also a former 4-H Leader and for years was the Chamber Santa making annual visits to the Guy & Mary Felt Manor. His passions were his family, four-wheeling and hunting.

Surviving in addition to his wife Jane and his loving dog, Duchess, are: five sons, Rick Horning and Chris (Annetta) Horning both of Emporium, Edward (Lyn) Horning of Bellefonte, John Horning of Mansfield and Larry (Beth) Horning of Ridgway; one daughter, Deborah (Roger) Long of Galeton; twelve grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother, Byron Horning of Emporium; and also nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, Sunday, November 7 from 3-5 p.m. at which time a Masonic Memorial Service will be held. Funeral & Committal Services will follow with the Rev. Russell Horning of Shinglehouse, officiating.

Sled Dog Races In Sinnemahoning Nov. 6th

Bring the family and enjoy the fun!
"The Sinnemahoning State Park will host its fifth annual Canadian-American Sledders Dry-land race event from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at the 40 Maples Day – Use Area. Races are also scheduled to resume the next day.
Event day will include Canine-Cross, Bike-Joring and Cart Races as well as GPS/Geo-caching and winter bird-feeding and craft programs and much more. All will be accompanied by lots of barking and tail-wagging.
In addition, check out the area displays of the rescue organizations and the new Sinnemahoning State Park Visitor Center, which is set to open next spring!.
Hot food and refreshments will be available to keep away the chill. Spectator areas will be open along the trails and staging area.
Races will continue on Sunday, Nov. 7, but additional programs will not be available.

MVA on Rt 46

At 11:16 pm on Tuesday, Emporium Company 14 and Emporium ambulance is responding to a one car motor vehicle accident at 306 Route 46 in Shippen Township. No entrapment is noted, but there is a reported head injury. The vehicle is reported in the ditch.

At 11:35 pm, the paramedic on scene requested a stat helicopter be put airborne to the Cameron County High School Field. Stat 9 has landed at 12:00.

The helicopter is airborne at 12:35.

4 PM Crash Closes Rt 120

Allegheny Power & Windstream Telephone crews are making progress on replacing two poles and getting electric and telephone distribution wires back in the air on Route 120 between Emporium and Driftwood near the Mason Run Intersection.

A truck hit a utility pole at 4:00 pm, breaking off two poles and dropping live electric wires on the roadway closing both lanes of traffic. Emporium and Sinnemahoning fire police were re-dispatched to continue to stop traffic at about 10:00 pm at the request of PennDOT.

The Utility companies are close to completing their work. Route 120 has been closed since the 4:00 pm crash.

A spokesman for State Police in Emporium said that the road can not be re-opened yet as the live electric wires shorting through the blacktop caused the road to burn and superheat, and it is too hot for traffic to travel on.

They are estimating it may be midnight before the road can re-open. Fire Police were stopping traffic at Driftwood and in the area of Mason Run Road on the Emporium side.

Bridge Facelift

For those of you out of town, this is the bridge at the East end of town. Most of the work equipment is down, but I don't believe they are done with either bridge yet. The bridges were worked on 24 hours a day during the initial sandblasting and repainting.

Wildlife causes crash

An Emporium man was unhurt on Saturday at 3:15 pm when his vehicle crashed into a road sign after hitting 2 foxes that entered the roadway in front of his vehicle on Route 120 in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

Michael W. Roberto, 27, of Emporium, PA, was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius westbound on Route 120 when 4 foxes entered the roadway from the south. Roberto's vehicle struck two of the foxes, causing his vehicle to go into gravel on the right berm where it then struck a road sign.

Roberto was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured. His Toyota was disabled and had to be towed by Ramsey's Towing. State Police filed no charges.

CHRISTMAS IN THE WILDS FEATURES STAINED GLASS

Christmas in the Wilds set for the weekend of December 10 and 11. New this year will be a walking tour of the stained glass windows adorning the churches in Emporium. “This idea was given to me during the summer, and I decided to add it to the Christmas in the Wilds events,” explained Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson.

The event is free and will take place Friday December 10 from 7-9pm. This will allow the walkers the opportunity to see the windows lit at night. The churches participating will have a guide explaining the story behind the windows and also an event. Not all the plans have been confirmed with each of the churches. Currently planned at First United Methodist Church, bell choir will perform, First Baptist Church will feature a reading of “The Christmas Story” and serve hot drinks, and at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Emporium Garden Club will host a flower show. Tickets are required to control the flow of visitors through each church. The free tickets can be reserved at the chamber office (814-486-4314).

Franklin E. Crissy III

Franklin E. Crissy, III, 89, of Greenfield Assisted Living, Strasburg, Virginia formerly of Emporium, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Virginia.
He was born September 11, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA a son of the late Franklin E., II and Myrtle Mertz Crissy.
In St. James Catholic Church in Driftwood he married the late Teresa "Tess" Kennedy Crissy.

Mr. Crissy was a WW II veteran having served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps 614th squadron, 401st bomb group from 1942-1945. He graduated from Penn State University where he received a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. Frank was a lifelong Nittany Lions fan. He met his beloved wife Tess of almost 50 years while attending Penn State. Mr. Crissy was member of Theta Chi fraternity at PSU, a member of the VFW, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, as well as being a licensed profession engineer. He retired from Sylvania/ Philips Electronics where he had worked as an engineer for many years. He was a longtime member of St. Marks Catholic Church, a wonderful father and family man. Frank loved music, appreciated nature, enjoyed hiking and keeping company with his unusually talented parrot, Jake. He was an avid reader who kept on top of world affairs. One of his particular gifts was that he could explain almost anything in a clear understandable way... a natural born teacher. He had a great intelligence and a wonderfully dry sense of humor. We will all miss him a great deal.

Surviving are daughters Nancy Crissy and Kenny of Star Tannery, VA, Jeanne Crissy and Evan, Stephens City, VA, Terry "TC", Mrs. Steve Dixon, Venetia, PA,and Dr. Kathy Crissy, State College, PA. Two sons, Harry Crissy, Charleston, SC and Dr. Franklin E. Crissy, IV and his wife Beth Anne, Bellingham, WA and 2 Grandsons Sean Crissy & Matt Dixon.

Mr. Chrissy was preceded in death by his parents Franklin E., II and Myrtle Mertz Crissy, wife Teresa "Tess" Kennedy Crissy who passed away in 1997 and a daughter Peggy Crissy who passed away in 1997, and one sister Myrtle Mast.

Accident on Rt 120 East

An Emporium woman suffered a minor injury on Sunday at 3:23 pm when her car rolled on Route 120, 2 miles west of Beechwood Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

Samantha J. Lopez, 23, of Emporium, PA, was driving East on Rt. 120, attempting to negotiate a left hand curve, when an animal entered the roadway. She lost control of her 2004 Dodge Neon, traveled across the westbound lane and struck a dirt embankment causing the Neon to roll onto it's roof.

Lopez's passenger, a 3 year old female child was safely secured and was not injured. Lopez was wearing a safety belt.

Emporium emergency services responded but Lopez was not transported to a medical facility

Geocaching Keeps Many Seeking

The Sesquicentennial Geocaching Trail opened October 16 and 17. More than 100 cachers spent the weekend seeking the 33 items hidden throughout Cameron County. The caches will remain in place for three months and according to organizers telephone calls for passport reservations continue to keep the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce staff busy. The passports have been limited to 300 and only 60 remain.

Numerous businesses reported brisk sales during the weekend. Many of those offered discounts to geocachers who showed their passports. “This was the first event coordinated county-wide,” Tina Johns Lorson, executive director explained. Cachers from New York, Ohio and Florida have come to Cameron County.

A few caches prove very difficult to find and listing the caches on the popular geocaching.com website has been a learning experience, according to Johns Lorson. “I urge anyone wishing to create a trail, to attend the upcoming geocaching seminar November 5 at the Emporium Country Club. I have learned so much by trial and error; instead, take advantage of learning from those who have successfully launched trails.” The fee for the seminar is $25.00. Dorothy L. "Dot" Shelley

Dorothy L. "Dot" Shelley, 85, of 570 West Allegany Ave., Emporium, died at Presbyterian-Univ. Hosp. UPMC, in Pittsburgh on Friday (October 8, 2010) night.
She was born Aug. 12, 1925 in DuBois a daughter of the late John and Stephanie Kuzniar Scepanik.
In St. Michael Catholic Church, DuBois she married the late Francis Shelley.
Mrs. Shelley graduated from DuBois High School. She worked for many years, as a waitress, in numerous restaurants in Emporium. She was an active member of St. Marks Catholic Church, she made a cursillo and was a member of the Rosary Society and the C.D. of A. She enjoyed and her cats and dogs.


Surviving are two sons, Terrance Shelley and his wife Valerie, Emporium and Shaun Shelley and his wife Eydie, Bloomfield, NY, 5 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren,
and a brother: Regis Scepanik and his wife Karla of DuBois, PA.
She was preceded in Death by her parents John and Stephanie Kuzniar Scepanik and
husband Francis Shelley who died in1990.

Betty C. Scanlon

Betty C. Scanlon, age 76, of Painted Post, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at home with her family by her side. Betty was born on January 19, 1934 in Campbell, NY, the daughter of Gilbert and Catherine (Burley) Quick. She married Robert F. Scanlon on December 30, 1951 in Campbell.

Betty is survived by her husband: Robert F. Scanlon; two sons: Gerald (Elaine) Scanlon of Jacksonville, FL, Randall Scanlon of Corning; three daughters: Barbara (Thomas) Darmstadt of Caton, Joan Scanlon of Bath, Kimberly Scanlon-Fenton of Dundee; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Kenneth Scanlon, and by sisters, Mary Lou Clark and Shirley Pierson.

William D. Milton, 75, of Maple Street Apt.,40 W. 5th St., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center on Saturday night. (October 2, 2010)
He was born Nov 5, 1934 in Emporium a son of the late Thomas and Olive Brown Milton.
Mr. Milton was employed as an accountant since 1957. He had been a member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368, Emporium a Miller-Raffaele Post 6221 VFW.

Martha M. Morse, 88, of Emporium Arms, 324 W 4th St., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Monday (September 27, 2010) evening. She was born April 13, 1922 in Emporium, a daughter of the late John and Margaret Schuster Michel Herzing.

Martha's stepfather was George A. Herzing who died in 1967. She attended St. Marys Schools and retired from Sylvania in Emporium where she had worked for many years. Years ago she was a member of the Endless Mountain Girls Bowling Team, the Sylvania Quarter Centr Mark Church, VFW Auxillary, Legion Auxillary, Women of the Moose, and the 8 & 40 Emporium McKean Lodge. She volunteered for many years at the Emporium Senior Center.

Richard “Dick” Umbenhauer

Richard “Dick” Umbenhauer passed away Sept. 22, 2010 following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family.
Mr. Umbenhauer was born March 23, 1937 in Emporia, Pa. to James and Viola Umbenhauer. He was a member of the Cameron County High School Class of 1956 and a self-employed contractor in Emporia.
Mr. Umbenhauer spent 20 years in Wyoming at the Upper Hoback River, Bondurant, Wyo. He was a rancher, outfitter and hunting enthusiast and owned Rim Country Hay and Grain and Umbenhauer and Sons Masonry.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betsy; sons, Rick (Julie), Mick (Traci) and Scott (Tammy), all of Payson; grandchildren, Heather of Casper, Wyo. and Rainna of Payson; great-grandchild, Kendrick of Casper, Wyo.; and sister, Marianne (Ben) Scott, of Chandler.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob and Jack.
He was well known and loved by many. He will miss spending “coffee time” at the 260 and Knotty Pine cafes.
A celebration of life will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Event Center Fireside Room, Payson. The family invites his friends to join them in remembering Dick.

Courtney Ann Standeven

Courtney Ann Standeven, 13, of Rich Valley Road, Emporium, formerly of Lancaster County, died Friday, September 24, 2010, in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.

Born April 18, 1997 in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Paul and Jennifer Townsend Wheaton.

A resident of Emporium for the past 18 months, Courtney was an 8th grade student at Cameron County High School.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emporium, the First Baptist Church youth group, the Cameron County High School bowling team, and shared the love of archery with her father, Paul.

In addition to her parents, Paul and Jennifer, she is survived by: her grandparents, Ann and Amos Wheaton and Esther Townsend, all of Emporium; two sisters, Brittany Standeven at home and Kara Wheaton of Sykesville; three brothers, Alex Wheaton, Payton Wheaton and Parker Wheaton, all of Sykesville; two aunts, Ashley Standeven of State College and Sherry DeLucia of Emporium; two uncles, Jeff Imboden of Saukville, WI and William Wheaton of Spokane, WA; and also many cousins.

Gary J. Dubler

Gary J. Dubler, 59, of 423 Grimms Rd., Emporium, died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Saturday (September 25, 2010) morning.
He was born July 21, 1951 in Ridgway a son of Florence Logue Dubler, Johnsonburg and the late Edward F. Dubler.

On November 26, 1999 in Kane he married Julie Thompson Dubler, who Survives.
Mr. Dubler graduated from Johnsonburg High School in the class of 1969. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1973 with a degree in Forestry and Wood Science. He retired in 2000 from Mallory Lumber Co. where he was a Sales Manager & co-owner. He was a member and past president of the Penn-York Lumbermens Association, a past director of the NHLA-National Hardwood Lumbermens Association & a contributor to the Penn Forest Products Association and a member of the Emporium Country Club. He was a avid hunter and fisherman. Gary was a loving husband & father.

Helen A. Metz

Helen A. Metz, 88, formerly of West Fifth Street, Emporium, currently residing at the Grove House, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.

Born April 9, 1922 in Penfield, she was the daughter of John and Helen Golla Hawk. On December 24, 1941 in Emporium she married Albert “Bert” Metz who died June 29, 1995.

A resident of Emporium since 1940, Mrs. Metz was valedictorian of the Huston H.S. class of 1939, and attended Penn State University before she was married. She was employed for many years by GTE Sylvania in Emporium in the Units Dept., was a Home Health Aide with the Community Nurses, and was a trained Hospice volunteer.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporium having served on several boards and committees. She was instrumental in bringing a Service Unit of the Salvation Army to the Emporium area and served as its chairman for 20 years. She was also a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Emporium Fire Department.

Survivors include: four daughters, Mrs. Edward (Nancy) Main of Apache Junction, AZ, Mrs. Ed (Diane) Bolin and Linda Slyder both of Emporium, and Mrs. Pam Hartman of Cisne, IL; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Metz was predeceased by a son Steven in 1967, a daughter Carol Metz Sizer in 1968, and by five sisters and one brother.

Friends will be received Thursday, September 23 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

Funeral & Committal Services will be held in the First United Methodist Church Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gary Atkinson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

Bascom "Bass" Bryant

Bascom "Bass" Bryant, 83, of 12 Russel Lane, Emporium, PA formerly of North Carolina died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, PA. Sunday (September 19, 2010) afternoon.
He was born May 4, 1927 in Bakersville, North Carolina a son of the late Jason and Sally Bryant.
Mr. Bryant was a self employed painter and owner of the former Bryants Painting Service. He was Baptist by faith. He was a Mason an member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the VFW.

Thomas D. Gribble, Sr. 55, of 65 Huckleberry Circle, Emporium died at DuBois Regional Medical Center-West, on Sunday afternoon. (September 19, 2010)

He was born June 3, 1955 in St. Marys the son of Ella Mae Bailey Gribble of Emporium and the late Harvey Gribble.

On April 18, 1981 in First Baptist Church he married Susan McLean Gribble, who Survives.
Mr. Gribble graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1973. He worked at Emporium Hardwoods for 30 years and most recently at AST and KwikFill. In his youth he was an active member of the Boy Scouts. He was a commander of the Royal Rangers Patrol 185. He served on the Board of Directors of Emporium Little League for many years and also Memorial Hall. He was a member of the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club. His passion was officiating PIAA baseball, softball and volleyball games which he did for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Lumber Heritage Region (LHR) 2nd Annual Photo Contest

The Lumber Heritage Region of Pennsylvania (LHR) has launched its 2nd Annual Photo Contest following the huge success of last year’s competition. There are six categories of photographs to be judged - Events/Festivals, Wild Life, Heritage/Historical Sites, Life in the Forest, Scenic, & new this year— A Special Youth Category for photographers 14 & under. There will be three cash awards in each of the first 5 categories totaling $1250.00. The Special Youth Category will have a single prize of $50. The categories are explained on the application.

Last year the LHR received over 150 photos from all over the 15 county region from photographers as far away as Maine and Florida. “It was very difficult to choose the winners,” said LHR executive Director Mike Wennin, “as the quality of the photos was amazing.”

Applications and information are available on their website at www.lumberheritage.org. If you do not have access to the internet, phone them at 814-486-0213 and the forms will be mailed to you. Last year’s winners are also posted on the website.

Thelma A. Gustafson Cox

Thelma A. Gustafson Cox, age 94, a resident of Pine Crest Manor in St. Marys, passed away Sunday, September 12 at Elk Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born August 7, 1916 in Brockport, a daughter of the late Eric, Sr. and Charlotte (Lottie) McCool Gustafson. On May 30, 1940 in Emporium she married Jack E. Cox who died May 25, 1984.

Mrs. Cox was a former resident of South Broad Street in Emporium where she and her family resided for over 60 years. Since 2004 she had lived at Silver Creek Terrace in St. Marys before moving to Pine Crest Manor in July of this year. She was employed by GTE Sylvania in Emporium for many years and later retired from Motor Coils Manufacturing in 1982.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Emporium, a life member of the former Emporium Chapter #101 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a longtime Red Cross volunteer with the Cameron County Blood Mobile.

She is survived by: her daughter, Charlotte R. Mallery (Patrick) of Moscow, PA; two sons, Jack Eric Cox (Edwin Light) of Santa Fe, NM and Jason C. Cox (Mary Ellen) of Spring, TX; six grandchildren, Adrienne Mallery Jimerson, Caleb Mallery, Jesse Mallery, Lindsey Cox, Alissa Cox and Eric B. Cox; one great grandson, Micah Jimerson; two sisters, Verna Kondek of Emporium and Helen Petruzzi of Las Cruces, NM; a brother Robert Gustafson of Emporium; and locally by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Cox was predeceased by two sisters, Renetha Kunes and Beula Metz, and by three brothers, Dalton Gustafson, Eric Gustafson, Jr, and William Gustafson.

Friends will be received Thursday, September 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Philip Sanders, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Red Cross, the First Presbyterian Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

CCHS Students attend seminar at UPB

CCHS Students Travel to Bradford

Several students from CCHS traveled to the Univ. of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Friday, Sept. 10th, 2010. High schools throughout the western part of the 5th Congressional District sent students to attend a government seminar hosted by U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson in Blaisdell Hall at UPB.
The topic covered was "Government Outreach 2010" and this included a welcome from the university and a presentation on the Pitt-Bradford experience. Guest speakers included Larry Schardt, who is a national resource conservationist and Robb Armstrong, a cartoonist who draws the comic strip "Jump Start" Registration began at 8a.m. and the day concluded with lunch at 1 p.m.

Oldest CC Resident Passes Away

C. Wilson Hudson, 105, of East Fourth Street, Emporium died Wednesday,
September 8, 2010 in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.

Born June 21, 1905 in Coolspring, Del., he was the son of Charles W. and
Annie Wilson Hudson. On January 16, 1946 in Bradford, he married Esther
Edelman who survives.

He was a graduate of Lewes, Del. High School and after serving with the U.S.
Coast Guard, he graduated from Beacom College in Wilmington, Del. and
Harvard Business School.

He was employed by Armour & Co. and later by the Hercules Powder Co. in
Wilmington. Subsequently he was transferred to the Hercules plant in
Parlin, NJ which was under construction, and upon completion in 1929, was
assigned to the Hercules plant in Emporium. When the plant closed in 1931
he joined the Sylvania organization and in 1935 was promoted to Personnel
Manager. Later he was appointed by the New York Office of Hygrade Sylvania
to supervise all Pennsylvania plants as Division Manager of Human Resources.
After retiring from GTE Sylvania in 1970, he was employed by Pennsylvania
Pressed Metals from 1971-1984 as a consultant in human resources.

Mr. Hudson was appointed by Governors Duff and Fine to the Pennsylvania
Advisory Board on Employment Compensation and was a director of the National
Association of Foremen.

Active in community affairs, he was a member of the CCHS Construction
Authority for the new high school, was instrumental in organizing the
Emporium night school in conjunction with Penn State, and was active in
implementing the Sylvania Tool & Die-Machinist training program in the
Emporium plant. He was chairman of the Community Chest and Red Cross
drives, was involved in organizing and served as president of the local
Kiwanis Club and was a charter member of the Emporium Country Club. He was
a member of Harvard Business School Alumni Association, Emporium Moose Lodge
#368, Sylvania Quarter Century Club, and Emporium Masonic Lodge #382 F&AM
receiving his 50 year award in 1990.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Esther, are: two sons, Craig W. Hudson of
Emporium and Jeffrey J. Hudson of Okeechobee, Fla.; one grandson; one
granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

Friends will be received Friday, September 10 from 4-7 p.m. in the
Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, where a Masonic Memorial Service
will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Military honors will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Guy and Mary Felt Manor or the
Cameron County Ambulance Service.

Cameron County Sesquicentennial Parade

Thousands Brave the Weather to Attend Sesquicentennial Parade


Cameron County’s 150th Birthday parade stepped off at noon on Saturday with 8 divisions. Intermittent rain showers and gusty winds did not deter the crowd as the entire one mile route was filled with parade watchers. The gusty winds necessitated a helium balloon change. Albert the Eagle did not make an appearance; he was replaced with a clown balloon that charmed the crowd with his grin and head on his hands as he reclined throughout the parade route.

Two trophies were awarded for the best units in the parade. The Cameron County Commissioners Award went to Bear Hill Horse Logging for their depiction of 150 years of Logging. The Cameron County High School Marching Band took home the Emporium Foundation Award.

Following the parade nearly 850 rubber ducks participated in the duck derby. It took the bright yellow quackers nearly 45 minutes to swim in the low water conditions from the Broad Street bridge to the gazebo on Front Street. The Cameron County Community Chest raised over $1000.00 from the duck derby. The winner of $100.00 was Debbie Hathaway, 2nd place finisher was Sherrie Guisto and the third duck to cross the finish line was adopted by Dee Bailey.

Emporium Rotary Club chanced off a handmade tomahawk by Ron Luckenbill. The winner was Paul Schneider from St. Marys. Winning a $100.00 gift certificate from Olivetts Shur Fine was Mike Smith from Emporium, and a $50.00 gift certificate from Sheetz went to Romie Catalone from Emporium. Cameron County Quilters gave their hand crafted work of art away on Saturday. The winner is from Maryland, Debby Bennett.

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Director, Tina Johns Lorson noted that the Sesquicentennial events are not over! During the weekend of October 16-17 a geocache event will be held. “Participants will be limited to 300! They will have the entire weekend to find 15 of 33 caches hidden just for Sesquicentennial. If they find 15 and stamp the passport, they will be awarded a limited bronze colored pressed metal coin.” Anyone wishing to reserve a passport is to call the chamber at 814-486-4314.

Onlookers lined both sides of the streets for Cameron Counties Sesquicentennial Parade held Sat. Sept 4th in Emporium. Several floats, helium balloons,horses and various parade entries gave the young and old a colorful and lively parade that celebrated Cameron Counties 150th birthday!
