Sylvan Heritage Council Sesquicentennial Banner Update

SPONSOR A BANNER AND HELP CELEBRATE CAMERON COUNTY’S SESQUICENTENNIAL

As part of the upcoming sesquicentennial celebration of our county, The Sylvan Heritage Council has embarked upon a street banner project to memorialize (or honor) individuals who have contributed in some way to the betterment of Cameron County and its citizens. Families, businesses, churches, or any other group may honor a family member, founding father, or any individual you feel has positively impacted Cameron County.

The banners will be proudly displayed in downtown Emporium (and other key intersections in Cameron County) from March through December 2010. They are 30” wide x 60” tall and will be hung from Emporium’s streetlights (similar to the Christmas banners that were displayed in the Borough over the holidays). Each unique banner will be screenprinted with an image of the person your family/organization wishes to honor or memorialize (you must provide us with a picture), as well as his or her name. The sponsor’s name will be prominently displayed at the bottom as well.

Sponsor a banner for $185.00 and help us celebrate Cameron County’s 150th birthday! If you have no one in particular in mind, we have lots of ideas! Our goal is to display these banners, each with a different image of someone who has, or will, go down in Cameron County History. Plans are underway for the publication of an informational booklet displaying each banner photo and a summary of the photo. A tentative open house for the banner unveiling is being scheduled for 7 p.m., March 29th, 2010 at the intersection of 4th & Broad street. Refreshments will be available at the Chamber of Commerce building, located at 34 E 4th street.

There is still time left to sponsor a banner. The Sylvan Heritage Council has time to submit 6 more banners!

Gerald P. "Bub" Gillette

Gerald P. "Bub" Gillette, 69, of 321 Portage St., Emporium, died at his residence on Saturday afternoon(March 20, 2010) after a brave battle with brain cancer. He was born March 9, 1941 in St. Marys a son of the late Philip and Juanita "Sis" Johnson Gillette. On February 4, 1967 in St. Marks Catholic Church he married Donna Armstrong Gillette, who Survives.
Mr. Gillette graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1959. He graduated with an associate degree from Bryant Stratton Business Institute in Buffalo, NY. He served with the US Army from 1963 to 1965. He worked for DCNR; Bureau of Parks. Years ago he worked for M & M Pipeline and Emporium Equipment Rentals. He was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church, Third degree and life member of the Knights of Columbus, Emporium Council #990. He was a coach for the Cameron County Little League, where he coached boys and girls, for many years and also served on the Board of Directors.

Surviving in addition to his wife Donna are two daughters Lori, Mrs. Paul Mall, Jr. of Emporium, Lisa, Mrs. Joey White, of Irving, TX, two sons, Brian Gillette and his wife Lori, and Steven Gillette & his fiance Francine Guisto & family of Emporium, a sister, Donna, Mrs. Sonny Abriatis of Emporium, 8 Grandchildren; Cassidy, Sydney, Madison, Nicholas, Seth, Alison, Taylor & Jase amd 2 Great Grandchildren Cami & Reese.
He was preceded in death by by his parents, Philip and Sis Gillette and a brother, Carl Joseph Gillette.

A mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Marks Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium on Tuesday (March 23, 2010) at 10:30 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

Visitation with Tribute Video will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a Vigil Service will be held at 2PM.

Sylvan Heritage Council announces Public Art Project

The George A. and Margaret Mee Foundation has recently awarded the Sylvan Heritage Council a generous grant to be used for the introduction of public art to the town of Emporium and Cameron County. Renowned Pennsylvania muralist, Michael Pilato, whose work can also be seen on Heister Street in State College and on West Fourth Street in Williamsport, has identified Emporium and Cameron County as the desired location for his next work of public art. This is an unbelievable honor and a monumental opportunity for our community.

Sylvan Heritage Council President, Jeanmare Holjencin, says through private donations and grants, more than $30,000 has been raised to date for the mural project. Several murals are already in the works, but the largest, a military-themed community mural, will be a significant contribution to the beautification of our community. "The community mural will depict soldiers, both past and present, from Cameron County. Michael plans to use a mock-flagstone background for the faces of local soldiers. The flagstone will represent the flagstone quarried from Cameron County that surrounds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and the images of the soldiers will be chosen from public input.

"The community mural will be painted over a two-day period this spring on parachute material. Cameron County students, senior citizens, veterans, and residents are asked to help paint the mural which will then be installed over a yet-to-be determined brick building in downtown Emporium. The Cameron County Vets Club has volunteered their venue for the painting of the mural.

Relatives and friends of those who have served, or are currently serving, in the military are asked to submit names and pictures of those they would like to see depicted in the mural. The Sylvan Heritage Council and Michael Pilato will review the requests and make the final determinations. When submitting your requests, please be sure to include a note as to why that particular soldier should be considered. Requests can be mailed to Sylvan Heritage Council, P.O. Box 216, Emporium, dropped off at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce, or the Cameron County Vets Club. Pictures will be returned in their original condition.

Mary L. Tartaglia

Mary L. Tartaglia, age 87 of Beaver Dam, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 12, 2010 at her home. Mary was born on December 13, 1922 in St. Mary's, Pennsylvania to Elmer & Myrtle (nee Hoskins) Kraft.

She was united in marriage to Oscar Bailey and later to Joseph Tartaglia. She was self-employed as a beautician. Her family meant the world to her, and she was very proud of raising her children as a single, working mother. She also enjoyed crocheting and volunteering at Golden Living Center in Beaver Dam. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium, Pennsylvania and also St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Beaver Dam.

Mary is survived by her children, Deanna (Michael) O'Keefe of Machias, Maine and Tom (Lillian) Bailey of Beaver Dam; her grandchildren, Christopher Bailey, Jennifer (Ed) Stehling, Matthew Bailey, Mary Margaret DeWire, Patricia (Michael) Hill, Gean Marie (George) Tobin, Shelley O'Keefe, Katie Dowd, and Patrick O'Keefe; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph Tartaglia in 1953, her two brothers Francis and Robert, and other relatives.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be held on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA 15834. Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

Helen L. Anderson, 87, of 40 W. 5th St., Apt. #105, Emporium, PA died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, PA on Monday (March 15, 2010) morning. She was born Jul 24, 1922 in Mt. Jewett, PA a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Emma Smith Paulson.

On July 5, 1940 in Winchester, VA , she married the late Paul Anderson. Mrs. Anderson retired from Sylvania where she had worked for over 35 years. She was a memer of the the First United Methodist Church over 40 for over years.

Surviving are daughters: Barbara, Mrs. Charles Bonini of Franklinville, NY., Paula, Mrs. Michael Woodside of Fernandina Beach, FL. Two brothers, Art Paulson and his wife Alice, of Mt. Jewett, PA and Don Paulson and his wife Doris, Lake Placid, FL. One sister, Sister: Lois, Mrs. Eddy Sluga of Lyndholm. Two 2 Grandchildren Mary Nella Bonini & Tony Bonini, and two great grandchildren, Oliver Bonini & Sophia Bonini. She was preceded in death by parents: Arthur A. and Emma Smith Paulson, and husband: Paul Anderson who died in 1992.

H. Donald Sestina, 76, of 748 Sizerville Rd., Emporium died
at Presbyterian-Univ. Hosp. UPMC, Pittsburgh on Tuesday
(March 9, 2010) night following a lengthy illness.He was born
Jul 5, 1933 in Emporium a son of the late Andrew and Charlotte
Keeler Sestina.On June 29, 1957 in St. Mark Cathlolic Church
he married Mary Jo Glasl Sestina, who survives.

Mr. Sestina graduated from Cameron County High School
and received a Bachelor Degree in finance from Lycoming
College. He was owner and agent at the former Sestina
Insurance Agency for many years. He was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church in Emporium where he served
as an Elder of the Church. He was a member of the Knights Templar
, an international philanthropic order affiliated with Freemasonry.
He served as a senior accountant at Sylvania, was a member
of the Board of Directors of the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital,
North Central Regional Planning and Development Commission,
Dickenson Mental Health, Citizens Trust Co. and Banc Corp.
He had also served as a Cameron Co. Commissioner.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary Jo Glasl Sestina are daughters
Lisa, Mrs. Chuck Banks of Liverpool, NY., Ann, Mrs. Brian Osoba of
Southington, CT. Two sons, Don Sestina and his wife Ricki of
Emporium, and John Sestina and his wife Patti of Walkersville,
MD.9 Grandchildren: Jen, Jason, Kristin, Andrew & Nathan Sestina,
Cali Banks, Brian & Matt Sanchez and Katie Osoba, and a sister,
Marie Whitcomb of Dents Run. He was preceded in death by parents
Andrew and Charlotte Keeler Sestina, a brother Jack Sestina, and

Mr. Burfield retired from Racoh Products where he was a truck driver for the laast 14 years of his employment. Many years ago he worked in the Oil Fields. He was a member fo the First United Methodist Church and the Emporium Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

CCMH to celebrate patient safety week

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital is joining with hospitals across the nation to celebrate National Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 7 through 13, to help raise awareness of patient safety and to strengthen patient/family and healthcare provider relationships. This year’s theme is “Let’s Talk! Healthy Conversations for Safer Healthcare.”

“This year’s theme, “Let’s Talk, Healthy Conversations for Safer Healthcare,” focuses on the patient as a very important member of the healthcare team. The celebration of National Patient Safety Awareness Week helps raise this awareness for staff and for patients, to let everyone know is okay to ask questions. It also focuses on the importance of effective communication between the patient, among healthcare providers, and with the community. We celebrate this week to show our commitment to safe, quality, and patient-centered care at Charles Cole,” said Lucy Lajcsak, patient safety and compliance officer at CCMH. A variety of patient safety exhibits will be displayed in the Irwin Medical Arts Center this week, integrating the theme of communication.

CCMH will be spotlighting adherence to the National Patient Safety Goals and the patient’s role in safety; the hospital’s upcoming participation in simulation training, a technique gaining momentum in healthcare that simulates real life, unpredictable or unusual medical emergencies and builds teamwork and communication skills critical in emergent situations; the telemonitor program where home care nurses can remotely monitor and communicate with patients; and the patient-centered medical home, which facilitates partnerships and coordination of care between patients and families and their providers. Other exhibits will focus on infection protection, emergency department care, emergency preparedness and restorative nursing in the long term care facility

Sesquicentennial Raffle Tickets Available

Tickets for the Cameron County Sesquicentennial Rifle can now be purchased at a number of businesses in the county. “The rifle will be on display at the Keystone Rural Health Consortium on Second Street through the middle of March”, says Director Tina Johns Lorson. The .45 Henry was on display in Sinnemahoning during the recent coyote hunt. “It is hoped that the county’s gun will continue to be on display at businesses and during events throughout the year. The gun has depictions of the county engraved in gold on the barrel and on the wooden barrel. If a business is interested in selling the tickets or having the gun on display, they can contact the chamber”, Johns Lorson concluded. Right now tickets are available at Reid’s Hometown Emporium, Keystone Rural Health Consortium, Endeavor Media, Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center, Valley Meats, and Sinnemahoning Sportsman Club.

The raffle ticket is priced at $5.00 and is good for all four drawings, based on the Pennsylvania Lottery Big Four nightly drawing. The first drawing coincides with the actual date of the county’s birthday, March 29. The winner will receive a Tom-Tom GPS Unit. The gun will be given away on September 4. “It is not just the person who holds the winning ticket that can win. The seller of the winning ticket is also eligible for a cash reward. The chamber hopes individuals and organizations will consider selling the tickets and cashing in on the winning,” explains Johns Lorson.

Hike Cameron County Draws National Media Attention

American Hiker Spring issue features Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and the Hike Cameron County project. The two page article features a picture from one of the Cameron County hikes and details about the four hikes held in 2009.

“The idea to hike Cameron County came from students of Nelson Haas,” explains Tina Johns Lorson, Executive Director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center. “The students made walking sticks and then wanted to try them out! Haas told of National Hiking Day in June and the hikes were planned.”

The staff at American Hiker added the Cameron County events to the web site and was surprised of the enthusiasm of the hikers. “Hikers came from as far away as Pittsburgh. The chamber received phone calls wondering when the next event would be held,” according to Johns Lorson.

As an incentive those that successfully hiked four trials will receive a free 2010 walking stick medallion to coincide with the county’s Sesquicentennial. More hikes are in the planning stages for 2010. They will feature historical sites throughout Cameron County.

Korin Trumpie Joins Charles Cole Pediatric Staff

Korin Trumpie, PA-C has joined the Coudersport pediatric office of Dr. Mary Ann Rigas and Dr. Marlene Wust-Smith at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 274-9198. Trumpie graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania’s physician assistant program, where she also earned a bachelor’s degree. Trumpie previously worked at CCMH’s laboratory before continuing her education to become a physician assistant. Upon graduation from Lock Haven, she worked in the hospitalist program at Elk Regional Health System. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants.

“Korin is a perfect example of our goal to promote the continuing education of young women and men from this area and to have them return as professional healthcare providers,” said Ed Pitchford, CCMH president and chief executive officer. “We are confident that with the impending opening in May of the Lock Haven physician assistant program at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, that many more young healthcare professionals will be available in the future for the benefit of the residents on north central Pennsylvania and other rural areas.”Trumpie and her family live in Emporium.

36thCameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic

36th Annual Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic Overview

The 36th Annual Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic is scheduled for Saturday, April 3, 2010. The Committee is very hopeful for good water conditions and is planning to build on the record turnout of participants and spectators from 2009. The overall theme of the 2010 event is “Celebrating Cameron County’s Sesquicentennial 1860-2010 .” The course is a 12-mile stretch of the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek which runs from the Emporium Country Club to Driftwood.

Registration for the event will be held at the Emporium Country Club from 8:00am -11:30am. The registration fee for Adults will be $15.00 pre-registered and $20.00 on race day. The registration for all Junior paddlers (up to and including age 17) will be $10.00. There will be an available breakfast and many door prizes from local businesses and organizations. A shuttle service, compliments of Krise Busing, will be available to allow participants to take a vehicle to the finish line and have transportation back to the start area. Numerous volunteer organizations will be on hand offering assistance helping to provide a safe and quality event.

A limited supply of kayaks, and recreational canoes will again be available for a small rental fee. To reserve a canoe or kayak, you must call or email me at the number / address indicated above no later than one week prior to race day! Again this year we will offer a two mile youth paddle traveling from Huntley to Driftwood for any youth at least 4-5 years old. Individual youths may either canoe with an experienced paddler or solo in a recreational kayak accompanied by safety boats. The youth event will be both weather and water condition dependent and participants must be pre-registered. New this year will be a 4 person canoe demo class opening an opportunity for entire families to paddle together.

The 2010 race awards will be handmade paddle plaques which will be given to participants over a wide array of classes. Emporium Hardwoods has donated the cherry wood. Josh Zucal from Zucal wood products planned the lumber. Classic committee traced ,cut and sanded the plaques and the 2010 design was done by Art and Ink. Total Engraving will laser etch them, and Cool’s Auto Repair will finish them.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Emporium Firehall along with a pasta dinner to be prepared by the Emporium Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. The Committee has turned to the talents of local artisans for prizes, which will include some Sesquicentennial featured artwork . A recreational kayak , paddle and PFD Co sponsored by Rock River & Trails From Lockhaven Pa will also be given away.

Chiropractic Office to Open in Emporium

Emporium native, Dr. Jon A. Carlson, will be opening his office, All-Star Chiropractic & Sports Rehabilitation on Monday, Jan. 25th, 2010 at 303 South Chestnut Street in Emporium. Dr. Carlson will be open for everyday chiropractic appointments as well as specializing in sports rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.

During his school years in Cameron County, Jon was active in football, baseball, wrestling and track and field. Upon his graduation in 2001, Jon furthered his education at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in the spring of 2005.

Upon his graduation from Lycoming College, Jon entered the Doctor of Chiropractic program at Logan University in Chesterfield, MO in January of 2006. He completed the ten semester program on April 25th, 2009. While at Logan University, Dr. Carlson obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Science, his Doctor of Chiropractic degree, and completed five NBCE National Board Examinations. Jon was awarded the Health Center Achievement Award - In Recognition of Exemplary Clinical Performance and Academic Excellence.

Thomas E. Andrews, 69, of 33 Pioneer Rd., Emporium died at Presbyterian-Univ. Hospital, Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. (January 19, 2010)He was born Aug 24, 1940 in St. Marys a son of the late Urban E and Ella Mae Lily Andrews.On May 19, 1984 in Waterloo, NY he married Linda Agliardo Andrews, who Survives.

Mr. Andrews graduated from Cameron County High School. in the class of 1958. He served with the US Navy. He retired from Caldwell Corporation where he had worked or many years. He was a member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368, Emporium, Miller-Raffaele Post 6221 VFW, Knights of Columbus, Emporium Council #990, May Hollow Sportsmens Club and Sinnemahoning Sportsmens Club.

Surviving: In addition to Linda Agliardo Andrews Son: Chadwick B. Shields & wife Melissa, Dagus Mines Son: David S. Shields, Kill Devil Hills, NC3 Grandchildren Justin Greenawalt, Megan Mattivi and Mackenzie Miller. Sister: Jude Hanscom and her husband Emery, Rochester, NY. Lunchtime Seminar Aimed at Land Owners

Those owning land in Cameron County and considering signing mineral rights leases are encouraged to attend a noon seminar. The free event will be held Thursday, January 21 at the chamber office. George Sharpe from Hammer Back LLC, will discuss Marcellus Shale Drilling.

The presentation will also give land owners an inside look at what happens after the mineral rights are leased, and what to expect once drilling begins.

This will be one of three meetings Sharpe will hold throughout the region. He hopes to create a land owners coalition covering Cameron, Clearfield, Centre and Clinton Counties. By joining forces, land owners can benefit each other.

Carol J. Pearson, 70, of 3013 Santa Lucia Dr., Orlando, Florida, formerly of Emporium, PA died at her residence in Orlando on Thursday, January 14, 2010. She was born Aug 14, 1939 in Emporium a daughter of the late William and Kay Striech Swank. On August 14, 1937 in First Presbyterian Church, Emporium she married Thomas Pearson, who survives.

Mrs. Pearson graduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1957. While living in Emporium she had worked at the former Beacon Loan Co. before moving to Bradford and later to Orlando, FL. in 1989. She had been an avid bowler and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Cameron Counties 1st new baby for 2010

I have been wondering who would be Cameron counties 1st new baby for 2010 - and Taylor Grace Brown fills that spot. "Taylor Grace Brown was the first baby born at Elk Regional Health Center in 2010. Taylor Grace is the daughter of Kyle and Kathryn Brown of Emporium. Dr. Wu Jan Lin delivered Taylor Grace at 8:28 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010. She weighed 6 lbs., 10 oz. and measured 20 inches long. Taylor Grace joins big sister Sierra Nicole at home. Taylor Grace’s grandparents are Bruce and Lisa Brown, Jennifer Lyon, Lisa Barnhart and the late Russell Barnhart.

The Brown’s received a savings bond and stuffed bear from the ERHS Auxiliary, a gift certificate from the St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, formula and a case of diapers from Elk Regional Health Center and a baby basket from the employees of the Family Unit as well as a stuffed animal from the St. Marys Daily Press.

Westerwald Pottery For Sale

The Westerwald pottery co. has teamed up with The Sylvan Heritage Council to design an ornament that mimics the pottery design which already appears on pitchers, crocks and mugs that are available for purchase. The ornaments are $15.

Geocaching ~ A great adventure for all!

"Encompassing ten northwestern Pennsylvania counties, the Allegheny GeoTrail will take geocachers through the beautiful wilds of Allegheny National Forest and its gateway regions. The ten participating counties are: Cameron, Clarion, Crawford, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, McKean, Potter, Venango, and Warren.

Each county features between 10 and 20 official AGT caches.
All caches are listed on www.geocaching.com. Search for them there by searching on "AGT-" or "AGT-(county name)" (to be county-specific) in the cache title

What is Geocaching ? "This adventure sport or hobby involves the use of a handheld GPS receiver, and based on information provided on the official geocaching website (geocaching.com), the GPS receiver guides its operator to hidden treasures just waiting to be found all over the countryside. A typical cache consists of a waterproof container, a log book, and trinkets. Signing the log book proves you found it, and the trinkets provide trade items; the idea is to take an item, then replace it with an item of equal value. The trinkets make a memento of the experience. Once the log book is signed and trinkets exchanged, the container is put back in exactly the same place it was found.

Every geocache hunt will be a different experience. Each hide is reflective on the person who did the hiding. Often, the trip leads the geocacher to new and unusual places . Geocaching is a great family activity!

To get started, all you need is a handheld GPS receiver and internet access. Log on to geocaching.com (membership is free) and enter the zip code of the location where you’d like to go. You’ll get a list of caches in that area. From that list, enter the latitude/longitude coordinates of your chosen cache(s) into your GPS receiver, and you’re on your way. When you find a cache, take something from the container and leave something you’ve brought with you as a trade item. Sign the logbook, and return the container to its hiding spot for the next geocacher!"

Williamsport Muralist Wants to Paint the Borough

Michael Pilato has painted the side of buildings in State College and Williamsport. The accomplished muralist is eyeing the town of Emporium for his next venture. Tuesday December 22, Pilato will give a presentation to the Emporium Rotary Club and be available to meet with others during an open house at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center from 3pm to 5pm.

Pilato contacted the Sylvan Heritage Council after a friend told him the council had received a Pennsylvania Partner in the Arts grant for a mural. Following his first visit in November, Pilato decided this would be his next project. According to Pilato, “Emporium provides an opportunity for me to show other communities that they can have quality public art no matter how small the community.”

Pilato does murals inside murals. He enjoys having the murals look at each other across streets and parking lots. His murals are also three dimensional. The family of a soldier killed in Iraq gave Pilato the Purple Heart earned by the soldier. Pilato has embedded the medal into the uniform of the soldier.

In Williamsport a section of the mural is dedicated to religion and those that serve the community. The background depicts the buildings, with the leaders in front. Pilato is also the founder and executive director of the Public Art Academy. His work can be found at www.pilatomurals.com.

Pilato plans to work with residents on the design of the murals and hopes to visit the senior centers and schools and have seniors and students paint portions of the mural.

CHRISTMAS IN THE WILDS A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS


Christmas in the Wilds held Friday and Saturday in Cameron County was a huge success both in attendance and financially. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson noted that at least $10,000. was spent over the two day period. Non-profits, and businesses report brisk business during the event which began Friday night with the Antique Seekers Holiday House Tours.

Tickets for the Holiday House Tour sold out weeks before the event. The Emporium Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary ran out of food during Breakfast with Santa. Nearly 400 people were served. Businesses that offered free crafts for children noted that they were busy throughout the afternoon.

Dasher and Dancer posed for pictures throughout the day, but another reindeer brought the crowd to the street. Robert the Reindeer from Smith’s Balloonworks in Williamsport towered above the parade route. Because of the below freezing temperatures filling the 43 foot long and 19 foot high helium balloon took longer than expected. Robert held up the parade for about 20 minutes. The crowd along Fourth Street stood 5 and 6 deep to get a look at the balloon which was sponsored by the Emporium branch of the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union.

Planning is already underway for Christmas in the Wilds 2010 which will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the founding of Cameron County. Any groups interested in participating are asked to contact the chamber office at 814-486-4314.

Christmas in the Wilds will highlight shopping locally. During the event Saturday December 12 various Emporium Businesses will offer free projects for children. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson hopes that when parents or grandparents take children to the businesses they will look around the store and realize what products are sold in Cameron County.

“Since Santa is bringing two of his reindeer plus the giant helium filled reindeer balloon in the parade, several of the crafts focus on reindeer,” Johns Lorson says. Children can make a reindeer candy cane stirrer at the Cabin Kitchen, and reindeer antlers at Cappy’s. Pizza Palace Plus will have pizza tossing and making demonstrations. At the Emporium Pharmacy children can make Christmas tree ornaments, Flowers N Things will have a flower craft and at the Aroma Bakery and Café children can decorate cookies for free. The businesses request that children be accompanied by an adult and the free crafts will be available from noon to 3PM.

Cameron County Recreation will sponsor a graham cracker holiday house craft at Memorial Hall from noon to 1:30PM. In addition to the activities for children, several businesses will have sales and customer appreciation programs. Flower N Things, Emporium Pharmacy, Touches of Country and the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center also plan to extend holiday shopping hours on both Friday and Saturday

Sheetz store robbed ~ St Mary's Pa

St. Marys City and Pennsylvania state police are looking for 26-year-old Edmund Ambuski Jr. of St. Marys in connection with the armed robbery of the Sheetz convenience store in St. Marys Wednesday morning.

Ambuski is described as 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 250 pounds and wearing a dark green hooded coat, black pants and white shoes.He was last seen in a 1995 green Pontiac Bonneville with Pa. registration HHG-9815.

Police believe Ambuski is traveling with 16-month-old son. A warrant has been issued for Ambuski's arrest.Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact their local police, St. Marys City police or Elk County Crime Stoppers at (800) 775-2030.

VETERAN LICENSE PLATES

Harrisburg – "Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces have a new way to proudly display their service as PennDOT today announced the availability of a new series of military license plates honoring veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard."On any given day, members of our armed forces are serving around the globe protecting our freedom," said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E. "PennDOT is pleased to announce this new series of military plates recognizing their sacrifices in service to our nation.

"The new plates feature the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white and yellow along with the applicable branch of service emblem or logo on the left side of the plate. Pennsylvania is printed at the top of the plate, with the name of the applicable branch of service at the bottom.

To obtain one of these plates, honorably discharged veterans must complete and mail Form MV-150, Application for U.S. Military Veteran Registration Plate, to PennDOT and include a certified copy of their DD-214, along with a $20 fee. Form MV-150 is available on PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services Web site, www.dmv.state.pa.us, via the Military License Plates link under the Military Personnel/Veterans Information Center. Honor a Family Member with a Banner

The Sylvan Heritage Council is leading the way in Cameron County’s Sesquicentennial celebration. Banners will hang from the street lights depicting a picture and sponsorship name of people that have supported Cameron County over the past 150 years. The unveiling of the banners will kick off the 2010 celebration in March.

The cost to purchase a banner and select the picture is $185.00. The banner will become the sponsor’s property in November 2010. The Sylvan Heritage Council will have banner information at the Christmas in the Wilds event on Saturday, December 12.

Several families and organizations have selected banners. The Cameron County Historical Society has selected Victoria Claflin Woodhull. Victoria grew up in Cameron County and was the first woman to ever run for President of the United States. David Berman and Marcia Smith will honor Frank and Sylvia Berman, VFW Post 6221 will display the pictures of the four servicemen for which the post was named.

He is 43 feet long and stands 18 feet tall! Robert the Reindeer is helium filled and will make his first appearance in the region at the Christmas in the Wilds parade on Saturday, December 12 in Emporium.

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson says the Macy style balloon will float high above the 24 balloon handlers. “The Emporium branch office of the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the mammoth balloon! The chamber hopes this addition will line the street with people wanting to see a Macy style balloon without the hassles of traveling to New York City.” Anyone wishing to participate as a balloon handler is asked to contact the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union or chamber office.

Unemployment rates are beginning to creep downward, yet Cameron County’s rate is still higher than any of the other 66 counties in Pennsylvania. According to a report from the Pennsylvania Center for Workforce Information and Analysis encompassing September, Cameron County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 17 percent, down from the August rate of 18.3 percent. The state average for September was 8.8 percent. One year before, in September of 2008, Cameron County’s unemployment rate was 9.6 percent.

In Elk County, the rate for September was 13.6 percent, down from 13.8 percent the previous month. At the same time in 2008, the unemployment rate was 6.6 percent.Potter County’s rate for September was 11.1 percent, down from 11.6 percent in August. The previous year’s rate was 7.5 percent.McKean County had a slight increase, with 10.9 percent unemployment in September compared to 10.8 percent the month before. In September of 2008, the rate was 6.8 percent.

The Center also reports on the number of available jobs in local areas. In September, there were 17,600 non-farm jobs in McKean County. A year before, there were 18,100. There were 15,200 private jobs, down by 400 jobs from September 2008. Goods-producing jobs are also down 400 from last year, with a total of 5,500 now. Service-providing jobs had the slightest hit over the past year, with 100 jobs lost. Those losses are listed in the government sector.

In Cameron County, there were 100 fewer jobs in each of three areas — non-farm, private and goods-producing. Service-providing jobs have remained the same for the past year.In Elk County, there were 700 fewer jobs in both the non-farm and private sectors than the previous year. There were 600 fewer jobs in the goods-producing sector, all of which were lost manufacturing jobs. The service-providing jobs decreased by 100 over the past year.In Potter County, there were 100 fewer jobs in several sectors, including non-farm, private and manufacturing. Service jobs held steady over the past year.

The national economic picture from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is given from December 2007, which they’ve pegged as the start of the recession.The number of long-termed unemployed — those who have been off work longer than 27 weeks — has risen by 4.12 million. The number of discouraged workers — those who are of employment age, but not actively seeking employment — has risen by 430,000.The total of under-employed people — those working part-time jobs instead of full — was 17 percent in September, an increase of 8.3 percentage points. The rate represents 26.2 million American workers.

The Bureau statistics show there were 2.387 million job openings in August of 2009 nationwide; there were 14.928 million unemployed workers. For each available job opening nationwide, there were 6.25 unemployed people in competition to fill that job
